Luciano Nakata Albuquerque, born in Brazil to Spanish/Japanese parents, early on earned the moniker Curumin, a term reserved by indigenous Brazilians for their more precocious children.
Curumin started his artistic career as a musician by the age of 8 and, since then, has lived within the São Paulo samba and funk scene. He became a prestigious drummer by the time he was a teenager, playing drums with famous Brazilian acts such as Arnaldo Antunes, Vanessa da Matta e CéU.
In 2005 Curumin brings us a confluence of cultures on his infectious debut album “Achados e Perdidos”. This record recalls 70’s samba funk at its best, channeling musical greats like Jorge Ben, Milton Nascimento and Tim Maia, but peppered with modern flourishes from jazz and funk to hip hop. “Achados e Perdidos” was released first in Brazil and, soon after, in the US by DJ Shadow’s record label Quannum Projects. The album was critically acclaimed in both Countries, resulting in Tours passing through several cities in Brazil and US.
The song “Guerreiro” was featured in a Nike commercial aired during the FIFA World Cup 2006 and also appears representing Brazil in the soundtrack of the game FIFA Street II. The song “Tudo Bem Malandro” appears at a compilation made by actress Natalie Portman for the anti-poverty organization FINCA and also appears in the “Brasil do Futuro” compilation made by Remy Kolpa Kopoul for Radio Nova in France.
In 2008 Curumin is releasing his second album entitled “JapanPopShow”, featuring artists such as the American Hip-Hop act Blackalicious, Tommy Guerreiro, General Electric, Brazilian collective Instituto, Turbo Trio, among others.
