"Christ vs Krishna SHOWCASE"

Toronto indie rockers Christ vs. Krishna might have a polarizing name, but they have a unifying sound. Their mellow British new wave-influenced indie rock is a sound that’s all too easy to fall in love with.

The band released a self-titled EP in 2009 with their first full-length, Sidewalk Astronomy, following in 2011. They’re back this year with a seven-song EP titled Move and Scale and plan to bring their critically-acclaimed live show across the country to promote it. The band’s hook-ridden and supremely rhythmic songs have all the ingredients necessary to make the band an indie staple alongside acts such as The New Pornographers and Stars. Their songs are easy to get into, at which point the listener discovers the buried melodies and hidden intricacies within tracks such as “Full Circle,” making for an ever-evolving and lasting experience. - Canadian Musician Magazine

"Toe tapping tracks rock"

Toronto's Christ vs. Krishna not only have a clever name, they are what I might call 'essential Indie rock'. Their current release, Move and Scale, is a nose dive into catchy and rhythmic, danceable songs that sum up what the college music scene is all about.

A mellow mix of new wave rock and 80's influenced harmonics create a distinctly unique sound, seamlessly putting together memorable melodies reminiscent of The Cure with relaxed, pop infused rhythmics. The music has a feel good vibe, and gives you many hum-able melodies to carry around for days. The percussion section offers delicious grooves and ensures that your feet will be moving. The guitars are simply too catchy, and the addition of some samples and a keyboard really give it that 80's flair.

The opening track, "Teezer", is a punchy and solid jumping off point and sets the overall tone for the record. Front man Pank Bagga sings his clever lyrics with a confident tenor and nostalgic demeanor much like Morrissey. I love the lo-fi, under-produced tone to this record and the way that sound just suits it.

The only drawback I found to this album was lack of variation. I thought they could have taken some things a little further, like experimenting more with sampling or breaking up the somewhat monotonous drum beats.

Move and Scale takes me right back to my time spent in Southern Ontario and is exactly what you'd expect to hear in any college bar on a Friday night. It's extremely fun and I definitely enjoyed it!

"Album Reviews. Christ vs. Krishna -- Move and Scale"

This latest offering from Christ vs. Krishna was definitely music to my ears. Pank Bagga's easy-listening lyrics make for an excellent experience, from “Teezer” right through “The sorrows”. Each part of the band combines in the perfect amount to make each song enjoyable. Shawn Salik’s work on the drums adds in the right rhythm through several of the songs. If I had to pick a favourite song from the album, I’d pick “We stand alone”. The song starts out very upbeat and the chorus dips down a bit but still provides a catchy and listenable rhythm that any listener can get into. I’d definitely recommend this album overall. If you don’t buy this album for the music, buy it for the cats on the cover. - Robert Murray

"Praise for Move and Scale"

Christ vs Krishna’s third release since the band’s formation in 2009 mixes vintage rock and new wave to create songs that are unique in this contemporary music world but also radio-accessible. The end result is a refreshing mix of songs that will make you feel like you’re either enjoying yourself at a pub in 2013 or at a rock concert in the late 1980s.

The Toronto based indie band’s combination of pop and classic rock serves them well and keeps their fans happy. While not necessarily dancing music, the melodies are bouncy and fun, and it’s easy to find oneself getting caught up in the beat.

The album is most energetic in its first half, especially on the tracks “We Stand Alone” and “Fall Apart,” but the mellow mood in the latter half is more relaxing for the listener.

Frontman Pank Bagga’s lyrics complement lighter melodies in the songs with a more introspective, thoughtful mood. In songs like “If You Could Turn My Way,” Bagga reminisces over past relationships, expressing a desire to both move forward and recapture old memories. There’s a tangible sense of regret and nostalgia in each song, which meshes well with the vintage rock stylings of the album. This allows listeners to drift along with the music and all its underlying emotions.

If you’re a fan of rock music, chances are you’ll get a kick out of Move and Scale. But even if you’re not, give Christ vs Krishna a chance. Don’t let the “indie” title fool you, the songs are written and made to be enjoyed by just about anyone. Above everything else, the album is fun.

Christ vs Krishna may not actually be divine, but that doesn’t make this group any less praiseworthy.

author: Rice B. and the RadioIndy.com Reviewer :
Whether building off a Velvet Underground with Strokes-style riff or plying a decidedly UK-influenced pop-rock sensibility and even experimenting with electronica dance grooves, the 5 songs and self-titled CD, “Christ VS Krishna” proves it has original and substantial musicality. Toronto based Pank Bagga is the singer/songwriter behind the moniker, and his unique sound succeeds not in spite of these different influences but, rather, because he blends them so seamlessly. So, while CD-opener, “Hollywood Torpedo” is raggedly insistent like the best of Strokes songs, and “Lemonade” features the kind of instantly hummable hook worthy of The Cure, neither detracts from the other-worldly dance rhythms of the synth-driven “Sub-crack Waves.” The other 2 tracks, “At the End” and “Demons in the Church” lean more to the VU / Strokes influence, particularly in their effortless rhythms and irresistible melodies, but each is stamped with Christ VS Krishna’s utterly original vision. As debuts go, Christ VS Krishna’s self-titled CD is a memorable and provocative outing that delivers much, but promises even more.

"SONG of The Day: Christ vs Krishna – “Something”"

There should be more bands like Christ vs Krishna. Bandcamp is probably my favourite website. The (ever blossoming) number of amazing bands on there should be enough to sell ya, but the easy of playability, or access to information is amazing. As for the band, Christ vs Krishna is very much an indie rock band. Their sound bounces around the mellower edges of that spectrum, as they describe their music as:
Songs that focus on hooks as much as ambience

Enjoy their entire record in the player above. Any tune from this release could have been Song Of The Day. Enjoy it. Then check them out Tonight (May 24) at Zaphod’s. Also, please reference Their Bandcamp for more information.

"CHRIST VS KRISHNA ALBUM RELEASE PARTY"

Toronto's CHRIST VS KRISHNA play album launch show
Toronto rock outfit CHRIST VS KRISHNA will launch their vintage brit-pop/new wave flavored debut album “Sidewalk Astronomy” on March 2nd at The Velvet Underground, Toronto. The special LP release show will see Christ Vs Krishna headline, with support from Most People, Drugs In Japan and Jay Sad.
Fronted by Pank Bagga, Christ Vs Krishna is a four-piece influenced by the sounds of The Ramones, The Cure, Joy Division, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Michael Jackson and Bollywood. Bagga writes songs that focus on hooks as much as ambience; chord progressions as much as rhythm; and desire as much as the desire to just have fun.
The band’s 2009 eponymous debut EP was produced by Dean Marino and Jay Sad of Chemical Sound (the producers behind Tokyo Police Club’s Juno-nominated “Elephant Shell”, and many other leading Canadian rock/pop acts, such as The Born Ruffians).
For their debut album “Sidewalk Astronomy”, the band once again enlisted Chemical Sound for production and recording duties. The album was self-released digitally and on CD in the US and Canada on January 1, 2012. Their first single from the album is “Diamonds Die”; a 2-minute guitar pop track that is equal parts The Strokes and vintage The Cure.
A CD copy of the album and one drink is included in the entry price of $8, so come down and dance the night away with your new favorite band.

"Review Sidewalk Astronomy"

DI’m continuously impressed by how much music comes out of Toronto and how I can still find ones I don’t know about. Here’s Christ vs. Krishna who’s music is a combination of great hooks and rhythms. Their recent album Sidewalk Astronomy is a free grab fromBandcamp and shows a versatile range in their musical styles. There are some songs that sound more alternative like Diamonds Die but then there are others that have an almost electronic influence. For a price of nothing it’s definitely something you should give a chance. - Tina Feng 2012/01/31 – Ride The Tempo

Bio

Over the years, Toronto pop-rock outfit Christ vs Krishna (CvK) have remained loyal to their identity, crafting vintage Brit Pop and New Wave flavoured tracks. Pank Bagga front man of CvK, is influenced along a 30-year trans-Atlantic continuum: from the hard-driving early 70s punk of The Ramones, to 80s Brit Poppers such as The Cure and the Smiths, and the dance-floor rocking sounds of Prince & Michael Jackson; from the Pixies and others synonymous with the early 90s heyday of alternative and college rock.

With college radio play across Canada and the United States, and regular tours alongside hometown shows in Toronto, CvK bring an aesthetic to their performance drawn from the days before the internet.

For many years founding member and Canadian hipster, Pank Bagga has performed at essentially every Toronto rock venue, includingThe El Mocambo, Lee's Palace, The Cameron House and the Reverb. Pank has also opened for Sam Roberts and shared a stage with Bedouin Soundclash.

In 2013, Christ vs Krishna are continuing to enjoy their penchants for touring, writing and continuing their journey across the landscape of the North American music scene.
