"Sound Crucible Review 1"

REVIEW
SOUND CRUCIBLE 09
By Vaughn Pinxit, Coordinator Ballina Community Gallery

The Sound Crucible, experimental sound event, was recently held on the 4th of April at the Catholic Church Hall in Bangalow.

Cye Wood was the first act on stage and welcomed the audience into an ethereal atmosphere of haunting beauty. With the violin crying like an angel, a replying piano then subtle laptop programming bubbling underneath, the ambience that was created had everyone mesmerised.

REVIEW
SOUND CRUCIBLE 09
By Kerry Norman, experimental musician

The evening seemed to have a violin theme, 3 out of the 8 acts included a violin.

Cye Wood
3 performers - Laptop doing simple beats and treatments of the violin and piano. Half an hour continuous but with different sections delineated by change of beats. Very enjoyable, the main ingredient was the violin. Reminded me of "Mc Kenzie Theory" an Australian band from the 70's that had a violin player.

Bio

Cye began studying classical violin at the age of three. He joined his first band when he was eleven and has been involved in numerous bands and recording projects since then.
Some of his most inspired moments have involved improvising in acoustic spaces that create ambient overtones, in effect providing rich soundscapes to play within. These locations have ranged from empty underground tunnels or walkways graced by the occasional passer by, or under a bridge playing to a curious turtle, to inside a lighthouse with butterflies circling outside.
Over the years Cye has performed at a wide variety of venues and festivals including Bellingen Global Carnival, Sydney Festival, Woodford, Byron Bluesfest, Mullum Festival and Parihaka(NZ). He has also contributed solo violin and string arrangements to various documentaries and feature films and has had the pleasure of working with a diverse range of artists including Jesse Younan, Yeshe, The Bird, Jimmy Little, Lisa Gerrard, Tim Finn, Christine Anu and Eartha Kitt.
When composing and recording Cye works with a wide variety of instruments including violin, piano, harmonium, viola, cello, bass, guitar, cittern, voice, percussion and basically anything that the work requires including field recordings, prepared piano and various subtle experimental techniques.
He has recently released an EP of his own compositions titled Araya.
Cye has developed a unique improvisational style with the violin, that when combined with his original compositions conjures up deeply emotive soundscapes. He has created a live solo show utilising recent advances in looping technology which has provided him the flexibility necessary to perform the different elements of his compositions as fluid arrangements. Essentially this means he is able to adapt his compositions to each individual performance ensuring no show is exactly the same.
This show is able to be performed in a solo format or accompanied with additional musicians.
