Set for Peace is a fantastic initiative to spread the message of Peace Day through music!

Its first year has been a great success, DJs around the world helped to make over 37,000 people aware of Peace Day 21 September.

‘Da Banda’s, Kuduro superstars plan to make history when they descend on clubbers paradise Ibiza for the first time.
Originating from Angola, Eddy Sex, Fogo de Deus, Manda Chuva and DJ’s Ketchup, Satelite and Silyvi - a troupe of Kuduro musicians, dancers and DJ’s under the Da Banda umbrella, will showcase their vibrant mix of Kuduro, Afrobeats, Electronica and Kizomba at the International Music Summit Grande Finale on May 22, Savannah’s on May 24 and Sands on May 25.

Kuduro first appeared in Angola in the early 1990’s in the clubs and ‘back yards’ of Luanda and has since been transported round the globe to be enjoyed nowadays in Europe, different parts of Africa and Brazil. Thousands of clubbers in Ibiza, one of the world’s most popular party destinations, will enjoy the frenetic beats and see ‘the real thing’ as an expert team of Angolan Kuduristas showcase their styles.

Although familiar to the party island, with Kuduro music reaching the top 40 most popular dance tracks in Ibiza, the island has never before seen real Kuduristas from The streets of the Angolan capital, Luanda, play to massive audiences.

Over the past 20 years, Kuduro has increased its popularity and is inspiring artists around the world. It’s a mix of Angolan traditional music with tribal beats flavoured by house and techno and has become the latest sensation within the dance genre.

Its sounds have been described as ‘infectious and pulsating, racing along at 140 beats per minute’ plus ‘fast and freaky, with mental dance moves’Already the Da Banda troupe are being welcomed to Ibiza with international festival and Ibiza favourites, The Cuban Brothers, planning to collaborate with the Kuduristas.

Cuban Brothers front man Mike Keat says: “It’s a great idea to have them in Ibiza. Some of their stuff is really raw and captivating and the dancing is off the scale.” The mastermind behind Da Banda is the popular singer and executive producer, Coréon Dú, who has made it a personal quest to forge a bigger place for Angola on the international music and dance scene.

He says: “Kuduro dance is rooted in Angolan carnival and urban dance as well as traditional Angolan dance moves from the rural areas. It also draws on international dance styles.” African Kuduro superstar, DJ Silyvi, states: “A Kuduro beat is different to any other beat. We adapted techno to our rhythm, our way of dancing and our way of being. When you listen closely it has the essence of carnival.”

Fogo de Deus, musician and famously known as the best Kuduro dancer in Angola adds: “A big surprise has been the ‘dance-off battles’ we get into cities all over the world. It’s just fabulous to go up against some of the best dancers in the world and show how Kuduro is up there with the rest of them. I can’t wait to perform in Ibiza, which is A dream for me.” - Sugarcane Magazine

From breakdancers battling to ballroom swinging, the art of movement has become an athletic competition around the world. Since the late 1990s, Angolans have been gyrating to the speedy, 140 beats-per-minute sound of kuduro, an electronic genre that melds African polyrhythms with Caribbean soca and four-on-the-floor techno. Like hip-hop, kuduro has long been associated with athletic street-dance moves and one-upmanship, but as a dance form, it melds West African, Caribbean, and Angolese techniques with American-style popping and locking. Os Kuduristas, a five-piece Angolan dance troupe formed this year, aims to bring kuduro to the rest of the world and challenge others who like to trip the light fantastic. Tonight, after a demonstration and workshop, the Kuduristas take on D.C. hip-hop dance crews Urban Artistry and Lionz of Zionz, with music provided by D.C. DJs Sol Power and Underdog. Kuduro dancer MC Fogo de Deus will contribute vocals, calling out the names of dances and throwing in some chants to make tonight’s show an exhilarating dance-off. - Washington City Paper

Thought Bubble Concepts is pleased to announce that the short-form student made documentary film, Kuduro NYC, has been accepted into the Tribeca International Film Festival as part of its Our City, My Story series.

Created by three students from the Frank Sinatra School for the Arts located in Queens, NY, the documentary chronicles the recent cultural exchange between a group of students from the Brooklyn-based Achievement First High School and youths in Luanda, the capital of Angola, Africa, as the American students learn about their peers through Kuduro, an authentic and unique style of Angolan music and dance.

The cultural exchange was created as part of the social give back for the Os Kuduristas program that Thought Bubble Concepts developed and produced for the Angolan communications company Da Banda International. The program introduced Kuduro, a form of highly popular Angolan electronic music and street dance, to students in Brooklyn and Queens through beat-making and dance workshops. The programs at both schools included a school-wide assembly where visiting Angolan Kuduro dancers presented the music and dance to over 1,000 students. In an effort to expand the student-on-student peer exchange, Thought Bubble Concepts invited the junior film students to document the exchange.

The documentary also recently won Lincoln Center’s Dance on Film Festival’s Capture Motion student film competition. In honor of their accomplishments the student filmmakers will be flown to Los Angeles, California, to present the film at the sister festival Dance on Film West in May with screenings at the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Peace One Day has partnered with the Last Night A DJ Saved My Life Foundation (LNADJ) to launch an exciting new initiative for Peace Day, Set for Peace.

Peace One Day and LNADJ are calling for DJs and promoters around the world to celebrate Peace Day -- Saturday 21 September 2013. DJs have been asked to play a 'set' in the name of peace and promoters will be asked to dedicate their event to Peace Day. Our vision is to hear the DJs of the world, from conflict zones to nightclubs, to the front rooms of our homes, playing a 'Set for Peace', raising awareness of Peace Day.
With DJ's from over 52 countries already registered to take part in this initiative it is certainly showing that dance music can make a difference.
Paul Van Dyk is this year's leading ambassador and is DJing a Set For Peace at the flagship Peace One Day event at the Peace Palace in Den Hague celebrating 100yrs of the Palace.

Fundraising and donations from sets or events are optional.

How does raising awareness help?

Through detailed analysis conducted with the support of McKinsey & Company, the Peace One Day 2012 report found that, across the world, approximately 280 million people in 198 countries were aware of Peace Day 2012 -- 4% of the world's population. The report further estimates that approximately 2% of those people (5.6 million) behaved more peacefully as a result. As a result of Set for Peace & other initiatives, Peace One Day expect their message to reach over 600 million people in 2013.

In 1999, Jeremy Gilley founded Peace One Day, a non-profit organisation, and in 2001 Peace One Day's efforts were rewarded when the member states of the United Nations unanimously adopted the first ever annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on 21 September -- Peace Day.
