"DaboonDox Unleashes Storm on second Album"

By GUY D’ASTOLFO

DaBoondox keeps coming up with new material faster than they can record it.

The Youngstown-based hip-hop duo of Troy Napier and Jeff Killin released its second CD, “Da Perfect Storm,” last week. But they’re already working two projects ahead.

“Storm” is a collection of 15 songs that DaBoondox has been performing live for about a year. It was supposed to drop last fall, but finances and other issues — like Killin’s home being ruined by a fire — delayed it.

Though the music on “Storm” is familiar to fans, the next CD will be fresh. Tentatively titled “Unorthodox,” it’s slated for a summer release. And after that, the duo already is planning a two-disc follow-up.

But first things first. “Storm,” which was recorded in Killin’s home studio, will satisfy pent-up demand, said Killin. About 100 copies were moved in the first few days. “People who had our first album were waiting for this one,” said Killin.

The CD contains Boondox favorites, including party anthem “The Club Is On Fire”; “Single Again,” which samples the bass line in the old Brenda Lee song “Fever”; and the cha-cha flavored “Take It to the Floor.”

“We’ll go far and wide for musical inspiration to get people to relate,” said Napier.

Another highlight is “Splash,” which builds in intensity before being cooled off with female vocalist Ebony answering in verse.

“Until the Sun Comes Up” closes the album, offering bittersweet optimism in trying times.

DaBoondox will play the album in its entirety — and in the same order as it was recorded — in a release party Saturday at Paradise Bar in Warren. “It flows best the way it is,” said Napier.

As always, expect theatrics. The duo plans to begin the show with a newscast, breathlessly delivering breaking news about a storm that’s coming.

More shows are planned across the state, including a May 28 gig in Columbus. “We’re building a name for ourselves in a grass-roots way, selling [merchandise] out of a car trunk,” said Napier. “We can rep this area and even get some of the stigma off hip-hop. We’re passionate about that.”

Both Napier and Killin are fathers and want their music to connect with all ages, including the young.

“We don’t want a target audience,” said Napier, who has a second baby due in June. “We want a wide audience. We want kids to have a hip-hip group that they can go to see.” The group is working on a show at a local skating rink, he said.

Discography

We began our journey in 2002 and in 2004, we released our first album, Da Armpit of the States. Two years later in March of 2006, we released our second album, Wounded World. Since the release of Wounded World, multiple tracks have been played on internet radio station Rukus Radio out of Youngstown. We created an anthem single for the Youngstown State University football team called "Game Time" which is played at every home game. In April of 2011, we released our third and most recent album, Da Perfect Storm. Da Perfect Storm album, which includes fifteen amazing tracks, has gained us the most attention. "The Club is on Fire" and "Until the Sun Comes Up" are two tracks which have hit the airway through "The Home Grown Show" on 93.3 the Wolf and Rukus Radio as well as an internet radio station for Youngstown State University, Rookery Radio, which aired "The Club in on Fire" in Louisville, KY.

So who and what is Daboondox? Well it's very simple, my answer to that question is DaBoondox are Real People with Real Music...Made up of the multicultural tag team duo of Jeff Killin and Troy Napier both residents of Girard, Ohio. Yeah!! that's right, a little suburb town outside the rough hard streets of Youngstown, Ohio. We are just two individuals that just never gave up on a dream and continue to think outside the box. We are making it our life's mission to make music from the heart. We believe in diversity, brotherhood and peace. It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, sacrifice and patience to become successful. We pride ourselves on bringing a big city performance to the stage everytime we perform. We incorporate projection videos along with each song on a 12x12 foot screen to create what we call "hip-hop theatre". We are a product of our own environment and we bring the world real hip-hop music. Some of our influences include Outcast, Digable Planets, A Tribe Called Quest, Digital Underground, Black Eyed Peas, TuPac Shakur and even old school hip-hop artists including Public Enemy, Slick Rick and Big Daddy Cane.
