Daggerhearts play starry songs about confusion and sex. They formed in Upstate New York in 2001 and then spent countless afternoons perfecting their pop in the basement of their school’s all-girls' dorm (appropriately dubbed “Strong”). Since those days in the basement, the band - Victoria Legrand (Vocals, Keyboards), Dirck Ober (Guitars, Drum Machinery), and Lauren Turek (Bass, Vocals) - have recorded two-EPs worth of material that will soon find release on Recommended If You Like Records.
On both the Sissy Boy and Ugly Girl EPs, Victoria’s aggressive keyboard-pop singalongs are brought to life by Lauren’s broomstick basslines and Dirck’s twining guitars. These parts are then mixed together and shoved onto the dance floor by the thumping beats of Dirck’s drum machine. Sissy Boy and Ugly Girl tell the story of kids young and old, taking trips to the bathroom, bickering in the cafeteria, making out against the wall and winding up on their knees. Through it all, they always find the will to get up and dance.
If you tried to stick Daggerhearts in a box, the box might be labeled “synth-punk” or “neu-wave”, though the band probably wouldn’t fit. Daggerheats stand alone, writing on the bathroom mirror in lipstick and blood thoughts likely running through the minds of anyone eternally young, struggling to understand their own impulsive and conflicted feelings of rage, abandonment, and sex. Daggerhearts embody the world of the ugly beauty, the innocent slut, the bullied loner and the demons behind them all.
