"Review for Hank Williams: Lost Highway"

Hank Williams: Lost Highway; Live Arts; Through April 11

Breezing down the Lost Highway

BY ANDREW CEDERMARK

“I ain’t gonna worry wrinkles in my brow, cuz nothin’s never gonna be alright nohow,” says Hank Williams in Hank Williams: Lost Highway, quoting his song “I’ll Never Get Out of This World Alive.” And he’s right—we already know how the Live Arts production is going to end. So why not just enjoy the show?

Williams (the amazing Dallas Wesley) is colored by a series of embarrassments—his real name’s Hiram and his mom calls him “Skeet,” he’s not a great guitar player and he’s bald as a bowling ball under that big white hat. What saves this musical from the kind of boilerplate moralism that made movies like Walk the Line and Ray tedious is, first, the sheer force of the songs.

The second is that they were able to find such a talented group of musicians in the Central Virginia to play Williams and the Driftin’ Cowboys. Just as Williams is described, Wesley (a Lynchburg-based singer-songwriter) has the dark, beady eyes Williams was known for, could easily “change clothes in a shotgun barrel,” and has the yodel to prove it. His Driftin’ Cowboys—Thomas Gunn on Bass, Jeffrey Justice on Fiddle and Dan Sebring on guitar—sound like the real deal. The boot-stomping singalongs make it worth the trip. So do the lonely dirges. - C'ville: Charlottesville News and Arts

"Press for Live Arts Show"

Music attacks again! If you caught Lost Highway at Live Arts last month, you might be as jazzed as I am to learn that the band is taking the best part of that show—Williams' music, naturally—on the road. Dallas Wesley and the Driftin' Cowboys have two shows confirmed so far: next Saturday at Rapunzel's, and on June 15 back at Live Arts. Keep your eyes on the Live Arts calendar and this blog for info on ticket sales. - C'ville Online Blog

"Music Review for Hank Williams: Lost Highway Play"

Central to its success is finding the actor who can credibly recreate the music and our popular idea of the man. If that’s a problem, Dallas Wesley is the answer. Tall, lanky, and country boy to the bone, Wesley delivers.

Williams is served well by his superb quartet of musicians playing The Drifting Cowboys. Dan Sebring, Thomas Gunn, Jeffrey Justice, and Bahlmann Abbot could turn a confirmed jazz lover into a country music fan with their spot-on renditions of “Jambalaya,” “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” and “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.” - The Star Exponent

"Letter to the Editor about Dallas Wesley and band members in Hank Williams Play"

I wish to commend Fran Smith, Joe Adkins and the entire cast for the fine theatrical production of “Hank Williams: Lost Highway.” I’ve seen the play twice. It was very good the first time (March 24); it was even better the second time (March 31).

I am very familiar with Hank’s music. My father was a devoted Hank Williams fan, as am I, and I’ve heard many times, since early childhood, probably every recording Hank ever made.

Dallas Wesley is outstanding as Hank. Not only is Mr. Wesley a fine actor, which is icing on the cake, he is an excellent singer, which is essential for the role. Ms. Smith could not have found anyone better than Mr. Wesley to play Hank.

The instrumentation was good as well, and together with Mr. Wesley’s fine vocals, very reminiscent of Hank’s recordings.

I thought that “Move It On Over,” “Mind Your Own Business,” “Lovesick Blues,” “Your Cheatin’ Heart” and “I’m Tellin’ You” were especially good. - Charlottesville's Daily Progress

"Band Review"

"Dallas Wesley is at home on the stage--charming, believable, and talented, nailing even the slight yodel in some of Williams' songs. He's got the chops to do the music."

"Ably doing the music with him, are his backup band Dan Sebring, Thomas Gunn, Jeffrey Justice, and Bahlmann Abbot."

"Press for Rapunzel's Show"

Fresh from the spectacularly successful Live Arts production of “Hank Williams: Lost Highway”, Dallas Wesley and the Drifting Cowboys bring the music of Hank Williams to our stage. If you saw the performance, you know that Dallas does Hank better than Hank himself. And, like us, you most likely left the show wanting more. - RapunzelsCoffee.com

Bio

Dallas Wesley and the Lost Highway Band first performed as Hank Williams and the Drifting Cowboys in Live Arts Theater's sixteen-show, sold-out production of "Hank Williams: Lost Highway." Their natural chemistry, as well as mutual respect for each other, led them to reconnect as Lost Highway, playing their own original songs, other covers that remain true to the heart and soul of roots country music, and, yes, some of Hank's best remain in the set list. Dallas Wesley and the Lost Highway Band is available to play theaters, listening rooms and concert halls, private events, and more.
