"Rock On Together"

Featured Artist Spotlight - July 2008:

Damien Horne…Where do I even begin?

Should I tell you there are few other people in the city who support their fellow musicians like Damien Horne? If you go to a show in Nashville, Damien is probably going to be there…even if he's not playing. There is a permanent smile on his face and he has the ability to make every, single person feel important. When an artist is playing, he is singing along in the crowd and actually enjoying the music.

Should I tell you about this guy's heart? Damien doesn't know a stranger. He invites youngsters to come to concerts and show off their talents. He is constantly involved in some kind of mission trip or fundraiser for a worthy cause. The fact that he is an ordained minister isn't as impressive as the fact that he lives what he preaches.

Should I tell you about that voice of his? It's smooth, fluid and rhythmic. Damien has a conversation with the audience while he sings. The voice can project words or the sound of instruments. He switches between the two effortlessly.

Should I tell you about the music? After hearing just two songs, I felt like I knew this man. Whether fun, romantic, hot or inspirational, the songs leave an impact. You can tell they were written from a very personal place. There is a whole lot of variety. He lays his convictions out for all to see with the song "Heart of Africa." "Somebody's Hero" is the inspirational anthem. "Dream Girl" is fun and flirty. "Rain" is a crowd favorite and speaks to the all encompassing feeling of love. "Poison" is the fun, Big Band sounding song with crazy rhythms to which you MUST dance. Finally, "Burden" is the torturous love song that speaks of loving someone who only loves the idea of you and not who you really are. "Burden" remains one of my favorites to this day. Damien's sound is unique and blends so many types of music. It is genre shattering.

Should I tell you about the entertainer? An audience anticipates the start of a Damien Horne show. The excitement builds until he takes the stage. The show is well-paced and seamless with an element of surprise. There might be free-style rapping. There WILL BE amazing dancing. A guest performer has been known to take the stage. The signature Damien Horne back flip, completes each and every show. If you have the privilege of seeing a Damien acoustic show, it's just as entertaining. There tend to be more jokes.

Or should I tell you about his interesting and inspiring story? One of twelve children, Damien graduated from high school in North Carolina and headed toward Hollywood to follow his musical dreams. He eventually found himself homeless and returned to North Carolina. It was there that he formed a band and moved to Nashville. While playing on 2nd Avenue for tips one night, Damien was discovered by John Rich of Big and Rich fame. Do you want to know what followed? He joined the MuzikMafia, earned an Associates Degree, secured a publishing deal with Big Love Publishing (BMI-Nashville) and became an ordained minister. And I thought I was busy.

Like I said, I don't know where to start. : However, I know where you should start. Give this artist a listen at http://www.damienhorne.com . Tell him I sent you. To quote Mr. Horne, "Let Love Lead." - Rock On Together

"Nashville 4 Africa"

People from every corner of the music industry will come together April 22 for the inaugural Nashville4Africa benefit concert with the critically acclaimed African Children’s Choir at 7 p.m. at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Hosted by Big Kenny (of Big & Rich) and Damien Horne, the music event will also include performances by Faith Hill, Keith Urban, Dierks Bentley, Brad Arnold (3 Doors Down), Ashley Cleveland, The SteelDrivers, Michael Rhodes, and a starstudded line-up of very special guests. The first benefit of its kind in Middle Tennessee, the concert will raise money for charitable causes in Africa, specifically in Uganda and the war-torn country of Sudan. Through the Love Everybody Fund of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, a charitable organization benefiting from this event, Big Kenny Alphin will continue his humanitarian missions in Sudan, which have helped start a medical clinic, build a school for girls, and will soon transport much-needed medical and educational supplies to Sudanese villages. A portion of the event’s proceeds will also help build a new school in Uganda for the African Children’s Choir, which cares for and fosters thousands of underprivileged children throughout Africa. “The crisis in Sudan is as dire as we’ve ever seen it. The refugees there are depending on people all over the world to come to their aid,” says Big Kenny, performer and organizer for African relief. ”We hope by continuing to raise awareness and support through the African Children’s Choir and aid outreach, we will continue to let love shine through the terrible violence that so many of God’s children there have endured.” - Nashville4africa.com

"The ACC Unveils New Theme Song"

THE ACC UNVEILS NEW WOMEN'S BASKETBALL THEME SONG
Singer/songwriter illustrates the endless boundaries of ACC women's basketball student-athletes through his artistic talent.

Jan. 9, 2009

GREENSBORO, NC - The Atlantic Coast Conference will unveil the league's first-ever theme song for women's basketball in conjunction with the opening of the league's 2008-09 women's basketball regional sports television package as announced by Commissioner John Swofford.

The song "She Can Play", written and composed by Nashville singer/songwriter Damien Horne, will first air in two women's basketball promotional spots on Sunday, Jan. 11 in the Fox Sports Net and affiliates' production of the NC State at North Carolina game, which tips off at 1 p.m. and again during the 3 p.m. Clemson at Florida State contest.

Horne, who was raised in Hickory, North Carolina and is one of twelve children, offers a collection of R&B melodies, catchy pop hooks, and distinctive elements of hip-hop, soul, and rock. An NCAA Division II player during his college days, Horne's story, full of challenges in the pursuit of one's dreams, brings an element of empowerment and inspiration to each of the league's student-athletes and fans alike.

"Initially, we brought Damien in to work specifically with the Boys and Girls Club through one of our Tournament outreach programs," said ACC Associate Commissioner Nora Lynn Finch. "But after I read his story and heard a song that Damien had composed and dedicated to his niece ("Ain't She"), I knew that he had much more to offer ACC Women's Basketball than a few hours in an outreach program. My vision was then to have Damien compose a theme song, centered on our She Can Play! logo and slogan, that gives life to the brand of ACC Women's Basketball. We gave Damien the vision and merely 20 minutes later he delivered a song that I know will resonate with ACC fans of all ages and, in particular, our women's basketball fans."

Horne began his musical journey at age eleven, singing in his local Salvation Army Church. He was soon competing in local talent shows and performing in a traveling production of Godspell. After graduation, he got on a greyhound bus and followed his musical dreams to Hollywood, Calif., where he soon found himself homeless. While that quest leads most to destruction, it led Horne to redemption and eventually found himself back in North Carolina with a band called Stellar Tree.

One evening, while playing for tips on Nashville's historic 2nd Avenue, Horne was invited to perform with MuzikMafia (Musically Artist Friends In Alliance), the Nashville-based artist collaborative that yielded multi-platinum recording artists Big & Rich and Gretchen Wilson. Horne's music is supported by the group's mission to promote greatness in all genres without prejudice. Through MuzikMafia, Horne has had the opportunity to open for and perform with artists from every genre; Kid Rock, the Neville Brothers, Bon Jovi, Shemekia Copeland, Hank Williams Jr., Dwight Yoakam, Bettye Lavette, Keith Urban and more, all while remaining true to his own talent and style.

"ACC Basketball is the best ... just like the song says," said Horne jokingly, "I grew up in North Carolina watching the ACC teams play and am thrilled to have this opportunity to write a song for them that I hope the players and the fans can both relate to and enjoy."

Horne and the ACC are committed to highlighting the energy, skill and excitement of ACC women's basketball. The "She Can Play" song and music video will be featured throughout the 2008-09 season and will culminate with a live performance by Horne in March at the 32nd annual ACC Women's Basketball Tournament in Greensboro, N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference

Damien Horne

Somebody's Hero

Love Everybody Music

Nashville R&B/rock singer-songwriter Damien Horne got an incredibly quick break upon moving to Music City — he had been in town for only a couple of weeks when John Rich saw him busking on Second Avenue and invited him to jam with MuzikMafia, of which he's been a fixture ever since.

But that was back in 2002, and along with that quick break came an unusually long wait for Hero, his full-length debut album, produced in part by his pal Big Kenny. Even though MM may have been the first opportunity that came along for Horne, it's clear that it was the right one. Like Big & Rich, Horne displays a distinct joy in blurring musical boundaries, mixing flourishes of funk, soft rock and rap and diluting the inherent awkwardness of such combinations with confidence and effervescent charm.

But even as fuzzy guitars, funky drumbeats and soul strings battle on the fringes, most of Hero'sofferings are, at their core, straightforward, strummy pop tunes, the kind that groups such as Five For Fighting, Third Eye Blind and Vertical Horizon used to rule lite rock radio with, punctuated by Horne's soulful falsetto. While fans admire Horne's diverse sound, it's the sort of thing that tends to keep major labels at bay. Fortunately for him, he has a supportive, powerful crew to back him up. - Nashville Rage

Bio

Damien Horne is a soulful union of musical history. He’s a boundary-obliterating singer/songwriter whose artistry unites R&B melodies, catchy pop hooks, and distinctive elements of hip-hop, soul, and rock to change the atmosphere of contemporary music with a uniquely uplifting message.

Damien was raised in Hickory, North Carolina by a single mother and is one of twelve children. He began his musical journey at age eleven singing in his local Salvation Army Church. Damien was soon competing in local talent shows and performing in a traveling production of Godspell.

After high school graduation, he got on a greyhound bus and followed his musical dreams to Hollywood. He soon found himself homeless. It was a beginning that leads most men to destruction. It led Damien to redemption when he was rescued by The Covenant House. A year and a half later, he found himself back in North Carolina, this time, with a band, Stellar Tree. Eventually Damien and his band relocated to Nashville.

One evening playing for tips on Nashville’s historic 2nd Avenue, Damien crossed paths with John Rich. Rich invited Damien to perform at MuzikMafia, the Nashville-based artist collaborative-turned-phenomenon that yielded multi-platinum recording artists Big & Rich and Gretchen Wilson. Damien's music is supported by the Mafia's mission to promote greatness in all genres without prejudice.

Damien simultaneously pursued his music career and worked towards a college degree. His poetic lyrics "love came crashing down just like rain against my skin" secured him a publishing deal with Big Love Publishing (BMI - Nashville). He earned an Associates degree from Free Will Baptist Bible College where he also became an ordained minister.

Through Damien’s relationship with MuzikMafia, Damien’s undeniable talents and high-energy performance style have earned him opportunities to open for and perform with artists from every genre; Robert Randolph, John Cruz, Kid Rock, the Neville Brothers, Bon Jovi, Velvet Revolver, Shemekia Copeland, Hank Williams Jr., Dwight Yoakam, Robinella, Bettye Lavette, Keith Urban and more, all while remaining true to his inimitable style.

He has just completed his first full-length album, produced by Big Kenny of Big and Rich. When asked about the project Big Kenny offered, "I have never met a more important artist for our times, completely real, unique, deserving and uplifting. I cannot stop until the world hears his music. He writes, he sings, he plays piano and guitar, he dances like ‘the man’ and you know it when he backflips off the stage in a way that would make James Brown proud."
