Dan Austin

BandFolkAcoustic

Ultimately melodic and soulful singer songwriter. Knockout melodies, lyrics and arrangements - A little different to anything you have heard before. Classic songs.

Biography

My belief is that the very best songs can always sound equally good stripped down to just acoustic guitar and voice and this is what I aim to do. This makes Brazilian singer Caetano Veloso my greatest influence, closely followed by Eva Cassidy, as both create the most amazing atmospheres through minimalist approaches.

I set my stall by the quality of the songwriting that seemed to flourish most in the 60's and 70's. I try my tunes out on open mic audiences, and if they don't make immediate impact, I ditch them. I love playing live or in the studio and I think this shows, and I'm in it musically to the death even if I never sell a single unit. As long as people say these songs mean something to them, my purpose is served. I would much rather deliver amazing quality than be a marketing success.

My story is a simple one: Since my mid 20's I have organised my whole life around my love of songwriting and performing. Of course I need work to support this but as long as I am playing, I feel like I am living the dream. I have many, many songs that I have yet to record and I cannot wait to get stuck into them.

I am different from other bands because I sound different, but if David Gray, Damien Rice etc. acoustic based stuff is your thing, then you might want to give it a listen. Or you might not.

Lyrics

Hear me Now

Written By: Dan Austin

In a watering hole down the old Cowley Road, sat a crew from the car factory.
Hailing from every land on this Earth and united in their misery
They sat and lamented the mess of their worlds, how the journey to work was too far
When a boy from Brasil shouted out 'Hear me now, you just don't know how lucky you are'

The people where I'm from now they've got it tough, think nothing of what they are owed
Starvation's a neighbour who knocks every hour
And death just the man down the road
And yet you have never seen spirit so strong in their voices their eyes as they shine
It may not be steady this path that I walk, but it's all that I've got and it's mine

Chorus:

There's only one life go and live it I beg, I know it's not easy to do
Till everything you've always taken as read, isn't their waiting for you
But have you gone without food for so much as a day? slept rough even once in the cold?
Ever screamed out in the dead of the night, sure as hell that you'll never grow old? Sure as hell that you'll never grow old.........

My mother sews beads on kid's clothes for a living, the pittance on which she survives
But everytime she pricks her finger, it bleeds and reminds her that she's still alive
Just for a moment she thinks back to tragedy, illness and loss of a child
Then counts on her fingers her family still standing and walks back to town with a smiile.

There's only one life..............

My father cuts trees in the rainforest North for sixteen straight hours a day
Which takes him away from the city he loves and he's waiting on fifteen weeks' pay
But every night he and the men from the gang toast the treetops and drink the night blind
And the happiness they see is still so much more
Than you've seen in all of your time

And a boy from Brasil shouted out 'Hear me now, you just don't know how lucky you are................'

Swear to Me

Written By: Dan Austin

Yet longer still, this trail of our tears
Stretches into the darkness
As the hours turn to years
I'm coming home, but what will I find
Am I going to pay dearly
For leaving us behind?

And I'm beggin my heart away
Screaming aloud

Oh my love, won't you swear to me
Love, won't you swear to me?
I'm to dream of a better day when
We can be as we once were again
Riding high as we would have been then, swear to me.

In Dawn's small hours, I know that you're there
And in spirit I'm with you, and I'll hope, if I dare
Our parting words, still echo around
In the depths of my madness
I can hear no other sound

And I'm begging....

Oh my love.........

I searched the world, In error in greed
Set afloat all my lifelines, the very things I most need
So give me the guilt and I'll carry the blame
I can hold my hands up, and surrender to my shame

And I'm begging my heart away screaming aloud.

What am I?

Written By: Dan Austin

What am I? What am I?
What am I if nothing to you?
What do I give, how do I live?
What do I see, how should I be?

Where you stand
Is where I ran aground
Left a heart still bleeding
Died without a sound
Stony silence and empty regret

Here's the fool
Bitter, broken, blind
Walking wounded, stranded
Dead of sight and mind
Stony silence and empty regret

Turning circles, time and again
What could I give, how am I supposed to?
I've been turning circles, time and again
What could I give? How am I supposed to live?
