Biography

"We had Dan in for a Cafe/Concert. It was such a good night. The people loved it. He's a great performer with wonderful songs. Dan knows how to interact well with a crowd. You'll love the folk/blues feel he has going on."
Jonathan Manafo, Ajax, Ontario

Dan Bursey is one of those rare performers that is just as comfortable performing in front of kids as he is in front of adults. In fact, he jokingly notes that he started performing for kids because "it was just getting to hard to convince adults that I was cool."

Dan Bursey is an award-winning acoustic singer-songwriter from Lewisporte, NL, who regularly performs for audiences of both adults and children. With faith-based lyrics and music that can be described as a mix of folk, blues, and jazz, Dan is a seasoned live performer and communicator, as well as an ordained minister. As a performer, Dan is able to entertain and engage an audience using only an acoustic guitar, fluidly taking them from laughter to tears, and back again, within a single set of music. As a songwriter, Dan is able to deliver raw reflections on faith and love using memorable melodies and creative chord progressions.

His recent children's album entitled, "God is in My Corner" won Dan the 2011 MusicNL Gospel artist of the Year award as well as a national Covenant nomination from the Canadian Gospel Music Association. Dan's second full-length studio album, "Roots by the Water's Edge" was released in fall 2010. The ten songs on the album are an intimate look into a faith that is nutured amid the dust and pain of real life.

Roots by The Water's Edge was literally recorded a "guitar's throw" away from the water's edge, at Little Known Artist Studio in Lewisporte, NL. With co-producer Dean Stairs, Dan was able to be creative in the use of instrumentation and percussion, utilizing such items as an "ugly stick", a baby rattle, his lap and a ceramic cat! The result is not a project that sounds like ACC and Pop radio, but one that engages listeners with unexpected textures and thoughtful lyrics.

The first single from the album, "Hallelujah Carol" was released almost a full year before the rest of the album, and was sold online during December 2009. The proceeds from the sale of the song were used to buy a water filtration system for New Light School in Mae Sot Thailand, an academy that serves 180 migrant students.

His debut album, “Hope Will Rise” was released in 2008, and received critical acclaim, as well as a MusicNL award nomination (Gospel artist of the Year, 2008), and two Canadian Gospel Music Association award nominations (Jazz/Blues Album of the Year, and Jazz/Blues Song of the Year, 2009).

Dan also released a live album, "Live... by the Water's Edge", in early January, 2011. Armed with his acoustic guitar and a loop pedal, this intimate live set was recorded in August 2010 and showcases the diversity, humor and sincerity of a Dan Bursey live show. This album was an online release.

2011 will see Dan taking his live show to other parts of the country, including Ontario in February and Mayl 2011. Dan is also a regular performer at the Museum in Lewisporte NL, and maintains a very busy performance schedule.

Lyrics

In View

Written By: Dan Bursey, Steven Clarke

Verse 1
Like a child with no mother, I gave my heart away
Now these brazen idols are unwelcomed guests
And I said
You take no delight in my pain
But these misplaced affections must be ripped from my chest
For the day to emerge from the night
The darkness must be purged by the light

Chorus
In view of God's grace
In view of God's grace
I will offer my life, a living sacrifice

Verse 2
Like a fighter who's given up, I'll take off my gloves
I will no longer wrestle your work in my heart
And I said
I will trust you, I will trust you my Lord
To build me back up after I'm broken apart
For the day to emerge from the night
The darkness must be purged by the light

Chorus
In view of God's grace
In view of God's grace
I will offer my life, a living sacrifice

Bridge
May my life be a frame
That holds a picture of Jesus

Chorus
In view of God's grace,
In view of God's grace
I will offer my life, a living sacrifice

In view of God's grace
(May my life be a frame...)
In view of God's grace
(...That holds a picture of Jesus)
I will offer my life a living sacrifice

In view of God's grace
(May my life be a frame...)
In view of God's grace
(...That holds a picture of Jesus)
I will offer my life a living sacrifice

May my life be a frame

Everything that I Am

Written By: Dan Bursey

Verse 1
I laughed today and could've sworn you were in the room
I spoke to my own son and I sounded just like you
You were never harsh, and you never deceived
You stood up for the ones you loved and the things you believed

Chorus
Everything that I am and what I'm not I swear I owe it all to you
Everything that I am and what I'm not I swear I owe it all to you

Verse 2
I felt the love you had for us and many times I've wondered
If I'm loving my own wife as well as you loved my mother
Like your father before you, God's Word was your labour
Seven children now have grown and each one serves the Saviour

Chorus
Everything that I am and what I'm not I swear I owe it all to you
Everything that I am and what I'm not I swear I owe it all to you

Verse 3
I look into your eyes and I see your soul is still on fire
But your flesh is weak and your body's tired
If I could take from you the things that plague your flesh
I would take them all upon my back and I would give your rest

Chorus
Everything that I am and what I'm not I swear I owe it all to you
Everything that I am and what I'm not I swear I owe it all to you

I laughed today and I could've sworn you were in the room

Hallelujah Carol

Written By: Dan Bursey

Verse 1:
Sing, O you angels, songs written in Heaven
Fill the night sky with your brilliance
Proclaim to the world that Emmanuel is born
To bring about her deliverance

Chorus:
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
God has come to walk among men
We sing
Hallelujah, Halelujah
Peace has come to your people again
Peace has come to your people

Verse 2:
Run, O you shepherds, from out in the fields
Run to the place where they've laid him
Fall at the feet of this new-born child
Messiah for whom you have waited

Chorus

Verse 3:
Shine, O you stars, in the Heavens above
Pointing all men to the Savior
Sleep not till morning, till all men have seen
The fullness of God in a manger

Chorus

Tag:
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Peace has come to your people again
Peace has come to your people

*During December 2009, Halleujah Carol was sold as a digital download on danbursey.com. Through the sale of the song, enough money was raised to provide a water filtration system for New Light School, a day-school for migrant children in Mae Sot, Thailand.
