Dan Chauvin’s Unresolved is perfect mood music for taking a drive down the tree-lined Cape as summer fades into fall. He captures the feeling of easy-winding roads colored with sorrow and bittersweet recovery.

Chauvin’s vocals and acoustic guitar are the backbones of this folksy ride – a mix of James Taylor and John Denver. His voice is soft and friendly with a sweet Yankee reserve, which shyly but bravely expresses his feelings. His lyrics could be a little bit more lyrical. The music and the melodies are moving and simple, from the keyboard in the whimsical and sad “Thinking of You” to the beautiful melding of voices, guitars, and drums in “This Time” that mimic thoughts whispered against the wind. The words are a little pedestrian against such lushness. “You never did listen to me anyway,/ this time won’t be any different.”

Peter Zolli’s lead guitar skips over each emotional ripple with a searing honesty and beauty. Positioning Zolli’s blues guitar against Chauvin’s folksy sorrow in “Everywhere But Here” is a musical learning experience. The album is woefully short, but the last track, “Armor”, ” brings all the elements together. The up-tempo, foot-tappin’ drums and percussion by Greg and Keith Sullivan meet a hurting but hopeful guitar. Even Chauvin’s words slip into the more poetic, “Keep on believing in the good days to come/, Harbor my dreams of our days in the sun.” Chauvin has harnessed the talents of the musicians around him to convey his message of loss and light that captures the melancholic beauty of autumn days, a brisk wind, and a road that goes on forever.
