Dande Showcase is a group started with the intention of preserving traditional Shona culture,thus the art the music and the spirituality.
Our fusion of Shona ethnic Instruments,namely the Mbira (thumb piano )which replaces the modern rhythm guitar,the Ngoma ( traditional Shona hand drum) , hosho,( shakers made from wild yam) marimba ( xylophone) blended with modern jazz band kit makes a unique unforgettable mystic rhythm .
The group was founded more than 10 years ago in Indianapolis Indiana and the band founders moved to Toronto Canada in 2009. Together with a Brazilian Drummer,an Afro Cuban guitarist and three other talented Zimabwean musicians,Micho the band leader managed to rekindle the flame and the support from the Jazz enthusiasts and World Music genre followers have not allowed Dande Showcase a chance to put down our instruments since the relaunch in Toronto in 2010.
Our influence is from the ancient untold stories of the Dande escarpment together with exceptional legends like Bob Marley,Jimmy Hendrix,The Beatles,Baaba Mal.
What sets us apart from other bands is our unique form of music which has been described as ,"touches the soul more than the ears".Our ethnic instruments and the way we fuse it with modern instruments also add a unique but irresistible feel to the ears.
Our story starts from the native homelands of the Shona people of Zimbabwe, in the Dande escarpment, and for the first time told to the world in song sound and rhythm. Micho the composer and band leader is thought of as a spirit medium who uses music to connect the spiritual word to the everyday world we live in . The band cast highlights the diversity of Canadian culture. A Brazilian drummer, an Afro Cuban guitarist ,a Calgary native and three other african band members.
