World Music Continues with Maori Band
Monthly Concerts at Winchester Cultural Center
World Vibration, a music series sponsored by Clark County Parks and Recreation, continues on August 13 at 2 p.m. at Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S McLeod, with a performance by New Zealanders Dane Ngahuka and the Whale Riders. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for children and seniors.
The series is hosted by KUNV 91.5 FM radio announcer Kay Tuma.
Tuma commented about the series, “People love world music. I’ve been playing it on the radio for over ten years, and I get so many calls of thanks. But hearing the music live is even better, and we certainly have the musicians to make that happen. I’m so glad we can have a series dedicated to the music of the whole world.”
Dane Ngahuka and his six piece band perform a mixture of R & B, pop, Reggae, Polynesian and Haka, or New Zealand music. Dane Ngahuka is lead singer and lead guitarist, and he embodies the group’s identity. Originally from New Zealand, he is a passionate advocate of his Maori culture while at the same time embracing popular American culture.
Ngahuka spent 12 years in Canada as both performer and music producer, and it was there he won the Canadian Juno award, the equivalent of the American Grammy, for record engineering. Although a relative newcomer to Las Vegas, he has already established himself as a representative of his native culture, having participated in both the County’s International Food and Folklife Festival and the Fremont Street Folklife Festival.
The band is made up of six members, including Dane; Eldred Ahlo, trumpet, ukulele and vocals; Dave Tufele, bass and vocals; Yvette George, dance and vocals; Rick Powel, drums; and Mark Vega, saxophone and keyboard.
Japanese Koto player Yoko Fitzpatrick on September 3; Hawaiian guitar player Gary Haleamau on October 15; a program of Tango music on November 12; and Ecuadorian musicians Duchicela on December 3.
