Dan Freeman is a Brooklyn based bassist, vocalist, composer, multi-instrumentalist and educator. Born and raised in Boston until age 23, he earned an AB in American History and Music at Harvard University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude, winning the prestigious David McCord Prize for excellence in the arts. After arriving in NYC in 1998, he attended NYC’s Bass Collective studying with Lincoln Goines and Matthew Garrison.

As a working session bassist, between 1998 and 2008 Dan has had the fortune of playing with and recording with such artists as The B-52’s, Angelique Kidjo, Peter Gabriel, Kenny Muhammad (The Human Orchestra), Gato Barbieri, Toni Braxton, Xavier, Kevin Aviance, Lee Musiker, Stellastarr*(keyboards) Bobby Watson, Angel Clivilles of the “Cover Girls’ and The Harlem Gospel Choir

Dan has also had the chance to play and record with some of the greatest session players in the business including Dennis Davis (Drums: David Bowie, Stevie Wonder), Swiss Chris (Drums: John Legend) Bashiri Johnson (Percussion: Madonna), Russ Graham (Keyboards: Chic) Stix Bones (Drums: Q-Tip, De La Soul) Ryan MacMillan (Drums: Matchbox 20), Matt Beck (Guitar: Matchbox 20) Eric Lewis (Piano: Wynton Marsalis) among others.

Dan has also toured the US and internationally with Virgin Records’ electro/dance artist Xavier and Broadway touring companies including the 1998-1999 South American touring company of “Grease’ He has performed at countless venues including Carnegie Hall, The Hammerstein Ballroom, NYC’s Webster Hall, Central Park SummerStage, The Panorama Bar (Berlin) Teatro Via Funchal (Sao Paulo), The Rhythm Factory (London). He has also appeared numerous times on television, the United States and internationally including as a principal in the nationally televised Folger’s Coffee commercial ‘A Drummer’s Morning’

In 2005 wishing to showcase his own writing, Dan teamed up with the other member of Xavier’s rhythm section, drummer Ken White and formed the electro/funk bass/ drum duo Comandante Zero. After getting their start in Brooklyn’s underground loft party scene,, the group began to play out in 2006 in New York City and soon were opening for other NYC indie/electo bands like The Brazilian Girls, The Juan Maclean and Stellastarr*. The quickly recorded an E.P. with the NYC producer David Siskovic of Disco Pusher. In 2006, they did their first international shows with a series of shows at London’s Rhythm Factory Since then, Comandante Zero was chosen as one of the finalists in the Emegenza contest in 2007 and has been playing to sold out venues in New York City. In December 2008, Music Connection Magazine choose Comandante Zero as one of the best unsigned bands of 2008 and The Deli Magazine will be featuring them in 2009. Also in 2009, Comandante Zero will release their first full album.

Since coming to New York City, Dan has taught privately and as part of the faculty of the Brooklyn Conservatory and the York Preparatory School.
