CMJ Showcase: Tribute Wars @ Le Poisson Rouge, October 24, 2009

I’d like to award Dangerous saluting Michael Jackson the trophy for best performance at last night’s CMJ Tribute Wars. Second place goes to Tragedy for their heavy metal Bee Gees tribute (you have not lived until you’ve heard them chant “Stayin’ Alive”) and third to Misstallica (but only because an all-metal tribute to a metal band seems redundant).

On Dangerous:

One of the best-known facts of 2009 is that, this August, Michael Jackson passed away. But, until now, most tributes to the pop superstar have somehow missed the point. In his honor, books have been written, movies have been made, and every news station has looped his story. All of this is fine and fitting—but MJ never wanted straight-up pity from his fans. He just wanted to make them dance and scream. With this idea in mind, Dangerous embarked on an all-metal tribute to MJ—all-metal is used loosely in this case, considering some classic rock and pop tonalities slipped by, but whatevs, it was still a supah fly showcase.

Highlights of Dangerous’ tribute: a glittery mouse costume, assless chaps, Macaulay Culkin’s screaming face flashing in the background during “Billie Jean,” and a random drunk man grabbing Jesus H. Juice’s mic to give his own karaoke version of “We Are the World” during the fiftymillionpeopleareonstage finale.

Bio

We are a supergroup comprised of members of 2 Skinnee J's and Tragedy: All Metal Tribute to the Bee Gees. We formed the band immediately after Michael Jackson died in order to capitalize upon his death. Our first gig was headlining at New York City's famed Bowery Ballroom, where we annihilated everyone and everything in sight. Check out our sweet video at www.myspace.com/letsmakedangeroushappen.
