"WATCH: Canadian artist Dani Robert premieres music video for her debut single ‘Clouds’"

Dani Robert is a 25-year-old singer-songwriter who lives in Toronto, Canada. Her debut single “Clouds” was released on June 27th and has already garnered 120K streams on Spotify. The track produced by Kyngs, Mic Tee (AMAG/ Cash Money/ Rich Gang), and Bryan ‘BC’ Cockett was featured on New Music Friday playlists in 10 countries all over the world (Canada, Sweden, Singapore among others). “Clouds” is an upbeat song with intimate vocals — a unique blend of piano- based pop, folk, and EDM with a summer hit. Robert is originally from the farmlands of Pain Court, where she began developing what would become her own sound: a fusion of piano-based, alternative pop, and EDM. At the young age of five, Dani began learning to play the piano. By the time she was seven, she was writing her own music, taking inspiration from personal experiences. Robert continues to develop her craft, playing a series of venues across Canada (Toronto Centre for the Arts, The Hard Rock Cafe). Songwriting has always had a central place in her life. That passion led her to become a music therapist, helping people to express themselves through music. “The opportunity to use my songwriting as a way to not only express myself, my thoughts, ideas, my purpose, but to do that for others is undeniably one of the greatest gifts I have been given,” says Dani. - Huffington Post - Leslie Daunt

"Watch: Dani Robert's quietly devastating video for 'Clouds'"

n July 11, Canadian the singer-songwriter Dani Robert released her first single “Clouds,” and it’s really something special. An elevated pop song with strong EDM and adult-contemporary influences, the track will likely bring to mind singers like Alessia Cara by way of Regina Spektor. It will also probably strike a chord with anyone who’s ever been involved in a deeply felt relationship between two people that blurred the line between friendship and something more.

“Clouds’” attendant music video, directed by Gord Poon, did a fantastic job illustrating that concept. Filmed in black & white with flashes of color, the clip chronicles the lives of two children who grew up and closer together until the moment came when they reached adulthood and their relationship changed. Although it only runs for less than four minutes, the video tells a complete and quietly devastating story.

This remarkable video also serves as an excellent introduction to Robert. The 25-year-old songstress developed an interest in music at a young age while living in Ontario farm country. By the time she was 7, Robert was a full-fledged songwriter and later turned her passion into a career as a musical therapy. With its starkness and bracing clarity, the “Clouds” video perfectly conveys the two qualities that make the song so affecting. And concurrently, it announces Robert as a compelling new presence within the modern music landscape. - AXS - Mario McKellop

- Radio Canada - Lise Leboeuf

Toronto’s Dani Robert is a 25 year old singer-songwriter. She has recently released a video for her debut single, “Clouds”. The single has reached over 105K steams on Spotify in a short time and it’s not hard to see why! Dani’s vocals on this single are perfect and the track has a great mixture of genres such as pop, folk and even EDM, and it possesses a pure summer vibe. Check out the video below, along with our newest segment of Five Questions With featuring this up and coming Canadian artist.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hey I’m Dani Robert! I’m a singer/songwriter based out of Toronto, Ontario, Canada and originally from the farmlands of Pain Court. I currently am managed by AMAG and I’ve been in the studio with them for the past year and a bit working on new music. We just released my debut single ‘Clouds’ which has been getting awesome response!

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

My music and writing style has definitely evolved as I have evolved as a person. It’s incredible to consider that music can’t escape the artist and the artist can’t escape the music. It all comes through in the sound. My music is sort of a blend of indie/folk and Pop/EDM. Some would say its Lorde meets Sarah McLachlan. A lot of my songs are piano-based, which is how I fell in love with music in the first place, the piano. My writing style is grounded in my life experiences and my faith, as I generate creative ways to reflect the world around us. I am so happy with the expansion of the sound we have going on, which wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible team I am working with today.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

My next performance will be in Montreal at the Four Industry Gala on August 31st, come check it out – I would love to see you there! I’m looking forward to performing more, after spending a lot of time in the studio. Just recently, I returned home to Pain Court to do a press run and did a few performances there, which was really heart-warming and exciting! We are currently discussing the possibility of a tour in the future as we’ve been blown away by the success of “Clouds” and the number of global listeners. Along with Toronto, Sweden and Japan are among our top listeners, so we may have to pay a visit. You can definitely expect the fundamental use of piano in all my performances but be ready to have fun and get to know me, that’s the best way to explain it!

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

I would suggest listening to my single “Clouds” – this song represents my style and has some great summer vibes! I’m just so humbled by how well it’s been received. More music is on the way. “Clouds” is the first of many to come!

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

Right now, my favourite Canadian artist is Alessia Cara. I love what she stands for, her look, her genuine spirit and of course her pure talent that’s reached a global platform. It’s truly inspiring to be in a music community in Toronto where she’s one of my peers. Sarah McLachlan will always be one of my favourite Canadian artists also, as I’ve listened to her since I was little. Her sophisticated songwriting, ability to capture a feeling and tell a story is truly remarkable! - Canadianbeats - Jenna Melanson

"Pain Court native Dani Robert releases debut single"

Stepping out of your comfort zone is usually needed to pursue your dream, says Dani Robert.

However, the up-and-coming songwriter and Pain Court native believes it will all be worth it in the end.

“It requires a lot of confidence and putting yourself in uncomfortable situations sometimes,” she said on Wednesday.

“Going to the studio at 6 a.m. in the morning sometimes, or showing up at events where there's just so many people around.”

Now living in Toronto, Robert, 25, has been keeping busy in the recording studio and recently released her debut single, 'Clouds.' The song already has nearly 200,000 spins on Spotify.

“It's been pretty exciting … witnessing how well it's doing,” she said. “I've been working really hard in the studio, and this summer I'm still working hard. It's going well.”

Robert said it's still to be determined whether the recording will be a full-length album or an EP.

The music industry is also starting to take notice, she added.

“Right now, we're in the process of talking to record labels,” she said. “Clouds has attracted a lot of attention. We're really trying to find the fit there.”

A music video release party for the single was held at the Orchard Bar in Toronto, where many artists are showcased.

Robert has been playing piano, her main instrument, since she was five years old, and also plays guitar.

She called Sarah McLachlan one of her early musical influences.

“I started listening to her when I was six or seven years old on my little cassette player,” Robert said. “Listening to her songs, and the emotion, and the piano, that really sparked my interest in writing songs.”

She's also inspired by the work of Anna of the North.

“Her sound is just so captivating,” she said. “The melodies are just so beautiful.”

After Robert is finished in the studio, she's hopeful to begin touring. She also plans to perform at the Four Industry Gala in Montreal later this summer.

Noting how she's grown in the process, Robert said she wouldn't trade the path she's taken along her musical journey.

“I come from a small town and things are kind of different in the Toronto world,” she said. “To be able to just believe in yourself all the time, overcoming self-doubt sometimes, I think that's the biggest challenge.

“This music career has definitely pushed me forward and really helped me to believe in myself. You really have no choice.”

"Music Video: Dani Robert – ‘Clouds’"

Dani Robert’s debut music video is one wonderful introduction to the Canadian singer. Gord Poon and Long Truong direct the music video for the song, and the black and white, simplistic video lets Robert’s voice shine — and boy, does she have a set of pipes.

Dani finesses the track, showcasing her talent and range. ‘Clouds’ is a sweet song about love and friendship set to a pop/dance beat. Its production manages to mix the best of both acoustic and more mainstream pop, letting Robert flex her vocal muscle with relative production at times, before leading up to a full-on synth chorus with vocal warbles. It’s an interesting mixture, and it sure does work here.

Speaking about the song, Robert says, “‘Clouds’ demonstrates the challenge of speaking what’s in your heart, exploring vulnerability, the subjectivity of human connection, love, and time.” Watch the video below. - Poparazzi - Sam Bennett

Dani Robert: “Music has a really cool way of helping you gain perspective on life”
DaniRobertInterview copy.png

Toronto’s Dani Robert is on a mission to sooth you and your ears with her therapeutic pop.

The 25 year old music therapist has recently dropped her first single “Clouds,” an eclectic fusion of EDM piano pop. It’s an introspective, mellow banger with the poignant lyrics’ perfectly representing Dani‘s therapist background: “Are we scared? Are we scared? / We can’t hold on, hold on / To the end… Should we float around instead / Like nothing ever happened?” she asks in her breezy yet emotive voice.

Turning the tables around for the music therapist, I was able to get Dani opening up about “Clouds” as well as the positive effects of music on our mental health.

“Clouds” is your debut single, but was already featured in ten of Spotify’s New Music Friday playlists and has racked up over 120k* streams. Were you surprised by this, considering you are a new artist?
Yes! I was definitely blown away! My team and I weren’t expecting so much love so quick! I am so humbled by your responses. This is only the beginning though, I have so much more music I want to show you all!

What personal experiences inspired “Clouds”?
“Clouds” is literally based on a personal experience I had in my own life. It’s the point in life when you like someone, sensing that they feel the same way but never really having the courage to say anything about it. They’re there but are also just vapor – it’s like a cloud. They can create storms at some points but eventually they just fade away! So let’s talk about our feelings!

You are also a music therapist. Did you find “Clouds” therapeutic in any way?
Yea for sure! I mean, so much about music and making music is therapeutic. “Clouds” specifically after going through the experience, putting it down on paper and then listening back to it; it was like a therapy session through making music! Music has a really cool way of helping you gain perspective on life and the different emotions you encounter in life.

How effective is music therapy?
It can be very effective! I’ve seen the benefits first hand! There are more and more studies happening that are showing how music can affect so many parts of the brain, including motor, emotional and memory centers. This is why you see people with Alzheimer’s who are able to sing back a tune they heard from their childhood, yet are not able to remember their spouse’s name. Music can be so powerful!

In what ways does music impact our mental health and general well-being?
Professionally speaking, I can say that music can help maintain and improve emotional, cognitive and physical well being – especially within the context of music therapy. I have such a cool opportunity as an artist to express my emotions and my thoughts all on paper and in the studio. That outlet has definitely been awesome for my own peace of mind!

Could you sum up your artistry? What genres and sounds do you enjoy the most?
My sound is always evolving and changing as I evolve as a person so it’s tough to say, however at the moment if I had to choose I’d probably say it’s currently a cross-fusion between indie, pop, folk and EDM. A lot of my songs are also based on the piano because I love the sound and have been studying it since I was five years old!

I can appreciate all kinds of music though – I’m really into alternative electro/dream pop right now! My ears are happiest when they hear synths and electronic sounds, mixed with some reverb and even sprinkled with some nature samples!

What uniqueness do you aim to bring with your music career?
Probably my musicality! I’ve studied the piano for so long and wrote songs since I was seven so I think that appreciation for music makes me a little different to work with in the studio. I think there’s certain wisdom from having lived in wide open spaces on a farm too. I take a lot of time by myself strengthening my mental and spiritual being to make sure everything you guys hear is real and true to me.

Would you sign with a major label if approached by one?
Yea! A few labels have actually approached us since the release of “Clouds.” For me, if our respective visions align, and everything makes sense, for sure! They just need to love me for me!

At times, your voice sounds similar to Lorde’s. Did you enjoy Melodrama?
Oh wow, thank you! That’s a huge compliment! I think Lorde is an incredible artist. I love the tone of her voice. I thought Melodrama was absolutely brilliant. Go Lorde!

Which female musicians inspire you the most? Who are you into at the moment?
I am definitely inspired by Alessia [Cara]! The types of songs she writes, the impact she is having – especially on women. She drives home a much-needed message of self-love and acceptance!

What issues do you think female musicians are facing today, both generally and in terms of portrayals?
I think female musicians are facing pressures of all kinds – a lot to do with the idealization of sex appeal, which falls into having a certain body type, certain fashion sense etc. This also seeps into songwriting as well sometimes. I find the most successful artists in general though are just true to themselves; so for me I just try my best to be honest with my music. Don’t let other people decide who you are!

What’s next for you in 2017?
Right now we are just in the process of soaking up the success of “Clouds.” My management team has been in talks with some booking agents, labels and a whole bunch of other people! I definitely want to show you all more music though! There’s definitely lots happening just keep following the journey by staying in touch on the all the social media platforms @danirobertmusic. DM me, comment, I try my best to always reply back!

"Interview: Dani Robert"

Its creator, Dani Robert, talks to me about its Spotify success and whether its acclaim was expected or not. Originally from the farmlands at Pain Court - she is now based in Toronto. I ask about the music scene in the Canadian city and how it inspires her. I ask about her latest single and the inspiration behind it; whether there is anything (music-wise) is coming up – and how instrumental music was when she was young.

I ask whether Robert is coming to the U.K. and what tour dates are approaching; the three albums that mean the most to her – and whether it is a struggle being a young artist in a competitive market.

________

Hi, Dani! How are you? How has your week been?

Hey.

it’s been a great week! I’ve been doing a lot of press and promo for the new single, Clouds - so a whole bunch of things keeping me busy.

I am so excited about how people have been responding to it. We just broke 100,000 Spotify spins!

Such a giant blessing!

Clouds is your new single and summer anthem. What is the story behind the song?

The song is all about a personal experience I had with a close friend of mine.

I had felt so many feelings for this person and I felt he did too - but we just never talked about it! It made me think of all the times we feel something and are so hesitant to act or even talk about it. I compared it to a cloud because clouds are there, but they’re also just vapor – similar to these experiences.

The feelings were there but weren’t really because we never acknowledged them (like vapor). So, the moral of the story is: TALK ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS!

The video looks like it was fun to film. What was the process of putting it together and how involved were you in putting the concept together?

It was such a great experience filming this video.

We worked really closely with the director, Gord Poon, to put together a story that, essentially, brought the lyrics and song itself to reality. He did a great job really taking my personal story and putting it on screen. I was pretty hands-on in the whole process too: from the initial brainstorm process to the casting - all the way to the end product.

Based on the responses I’ve been getting, I think we were able to capture a real-life experience that is allowing people to truly feel something. If you guys are able to feel something - and I mean anything at all - I’ve done my job!

It seems like a lot of time and thought was put into putting the song together. What was the process of making the song itself?

Definitely!

The song itself took about a year to fully complete. It was a long and worthwhile process that involved many people: from Mic Te to TJ; to A.M. and, of course, Ashton Adams and Kyngs - who produced the whole track. It started off with a few lyrics and a piano rift but when I took it into the studio for the guys to listen to - they added their touches and it took a life of its own.

That night in the studio, when we finally finished everything, I remember being with my team, dancing and beaming with smiles! It’s a very personal song to me because it’s something that really happened to me!

It has been streamed thousands of times on Spotify and taken to heart by so many people. How important is that kind of reaction and reception to you?

I’m just blown away by how well received the song has been thus far – over 100,000 Spotify listens in less than two weeks!

I’m so happy you guys like it! So many people have shared with me their own feelings on how they can relate to the song, and to me, that’s really what music is all about. As an artist, I just want to connect with people of all backgrounds and walks of life. It’s so beautiful to see so many different people from around the world create their own interpretations of Clouds.

It really shows that us, as people, really aren’t so different from one another.

Is there an E.P. or album on the horizon?

Definitely.

New music is on the horizon soon – whether an E.P. or an album, that’s to be determined. I have a collection of songs in the musical vault!

Right now, we’ve just been so taken aback with the success of Clouds and I’m just really trying to soak that all up. Stay tuned, though!

You live in Toronto but are from Pain Court. How different are the two places and what was the decision to move to Toronto?

Both places are pretty different from one another- but are each beautiful in their own way.

Pain Court is a small French village that is forty-minutes away from Windsor, Ontario. It’s filled with fields, old barns and breathes at a much slower pace.

Toronto, with its diverse neighbourhoods, for the most part, is much faster-paced and taller - in a sense that there are more sky scrapers! The only structure comparable to a sky-scraper in Pain Court would be their grain bins. Haha.

Music is the thing that ultimately brought me to Toronto though. Being there has allowed me to build the team of people I currently work with today. Toronto’s music scene is extremely tight-knit as well. It’s been so humbling to be a part of a community that has bred people like Drake, Shawn Mendes and Alessia Cara!

To call these people my peers is truly an honour.

What is the music scene like there? How does it compare to other parts of Canada?

Like I said: the scene there is so tight-knit and talented!

So many international artists are from there from Drake to Alessia (Cara); The Weeknd, Justin (Bieber) - who’s just outside of Toronto.

Montreal is another place in Canada I really love. It’s also so amazing and diverse - there are so many talented groups from Montreal.

Those are probably the two places I’ve really been able to experience as of late. Canada is such a huge country. I’m hoping to see much more of it when we go on tour.

How early did you take to music? Did you start playing as a child?

I started playing the piano when I was five and began writing songs when I was seven. My babysitter, Jess taught me Heart and Soul on the piano and, from there, I couldn’t stop playing!

There are so many creative ways of looking at the world when you’re that age and I found the best way to express it was through song. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to express myself in such a way - because it really is my most comfortable method of communicating and connecting with others.

What kind of artists and albums did you grow up listening to?

Growing up, my parents always had the radio on. They listened to a lot of '60s and '70s music - and I listened to a lot of Sarah McLachlan.

As I got older, I also started listening to Chantal Kreviazuk - after my mom and aunts brought me to her concert. Watching her play, I remember hearing a voice inside me saying: “You will be doing this someday!”

Is it quite tough being a young artist coming into music? Do the ‘goods’ outweigh the ‘bads’ - or does it depend on the day?

Being a young artist sometimes has its challenges with all the responsibilities involved - and all the different hats you have to wear.

It doesn’t necessarily depend on the day because you’re always thinking and experiencing so many things at once and are always on the go. Whether that is spending hours in the studio, being in constant communication with my managers; having to meet multiple deadlines in a day, odd sleeping hours; meetings, social media management or press runs you’re always on - it doesn’t leave a whole lot of time for myself.

As a young artist, especially, I think I have the added challenge and responsibility to make sure I’m presenting myself in a proper and respectable way. I have so many young listeners that I have no choice but to make sure I set an example for them. Often, when put in that position, a lot of pressure is there to do well not only for myself but for everyone impacted by my music.

But, when I see how people are connecting to the music and my story, all those challenges and bad days are really over-shadowed. Nothing compares to seeing people connect with my music and even having it help people in their lives.

So, to answer your question: the good absolutely outweighs the bad!

How do you unwind and spend time away from music?

I spend a lot of time in nature, swimming; painting, hanging out with my family; friends and Ned the cat (which my mom will soon be making a Facebook page for - stay tuned! Haha).

My faith is also really important to me - so I like to pray and go to church.

Can you tell us whether there are any tour dates coming up? Any plans playing in the U.K. this year?

As of right now, we are in the beginning stages of talking about tourin - but I would love to come to the U.K within the next year!

I hear that in general, the music scene in Europe is incredible - as you guys have a true appreciation for music. Wonderfully enough, my primary Spotify listeners of Clouds are actually from there.

Are there any new artists you recommend we check out?

I love Anna of The North – she’s an awesome artist from Norway.

I absolutely love her sound, look and overall vibe. Her melodies are absolutely breath-taking.

I would also recommend an upcoming Canadian rapper I’ve worked with named Brae.

He’s on the same management team that I am (AMAG) so we’ve become good friends. He’s such a talented young Canadian artist - not to mention he has such a happy-go-lucky personality. His live performances are unreal!

If you had to select the three albums that mean the most to you; which would they be and why?

Sarah McGlaughlin’s Surfacing (album) is a big one.

I was so young when I first listened to that album on my old cassette player at home. It definitely inspired me to write songs on the piano like she did. The overall beauty, depth and emotion captured on the album is beyond words.

Chantal Kreviazuk’s What If It All Means Something also had a big impact on my writing when I was young.

It was the depth and her ability to capture emotions and tell stories that drew me in.

Lastly, Frank Ocean’s Nostalgia, Ultra, is another project that leaves me in awe.

My ears never get tired of it and I feel like I’m in a different world when I listen to it. Strawberry Swing, in particular, literally makes me cry!
Dani7.jpg
What advice would you give to any new artists starting out right now?

Music isn’t just about making songs: it’s really about discovering yourself and knowing yourself. Get to know yourself in the studio - do you need breaks? Snacks? Do you need to prance around the yard and pick daisies in the middle of a session? (That’s what I do sometimes).

Analyse yourself and get in tune. I know there’s a ‘grind’-mentality out there but, sometimes, stepping away and coming back - or even waiting for that actual experience to capture - is worth it as listeners feel and hear the difference.

Really importantly; my manager Mic Tee always reminds me, that, despite the stress - to make sure to have fun in the process!

Finally, and for being a good sport, you can name a song and I’ll play it here (not one of yours as I’ll do that).

Thank you for the wonderful interview and I hope to meet you in person soon!

I would love it if you played The Dreamer by Anna of the North! - Music Musings & Such

"Clouds by Dani Robert"

Canadian singer-songwriter Dani Robert released her debut single about a month ago. Entitled Clouds, this single is an amalgamation of piano, electronic and pop with a music video that captures the wonders of a childhood friendship and a budding romance. Robert is not just a musician and songwriter, she also studied to become a music therapist, combining her passion for music and love of helping people. This single has already been successful, reaching over 100,000 streams on Spotify and featured on playlists around the world.

I thought the way in which this track built up to the first chorus was ingenious. It began with a ticking clock sounding the beat and simple piano chords. After the first phrase a touch of synth and some filler percussion was introduced until eventually the chorus hit. Although I wasn’t sold on the main treble sound used in this section, I appreciated the expertise it took to create the tension and anticipation felt during the first verse. Robert’s vocal performance was unique in a sense that she really new how to expand and contract rhythm. This is the sort of technique used in classical-romantic performances, and it was cool to hear it in a pop tune. The accompanying visual to the track effectively highlights the lyrics, depicting a strong childhood friendship that has the possibilities of turning into a romance that never comes to fruition.

Overall I think this is a very clever track. Robert’s vocal tone suits the style well and her music is certainly worthy of success. I’m interested to hear what else she has to offer. I give the track 9.5/10. - April's Music

It has been a month since Dani Robert dropped her debut single and everyone is still loving it to this day. “Clouds” is one of those songs that you didn’t know you needed to hear until you actually listen to it. It has this power over you that delivers with every single play.

Blending genres is definitely becoming the future of music as the years continue to go by and more unique tracks appear. This one is just another great experiment fusing piano-based pop with folk and EDM to create a truly remarkable song.

The title represents the lyrics beautifully; the repeated chorus certainly feels like clouds in the sky because not all clouds look the same even though they are made the same way. This chorus delves deeper and deeper the more we hear it and Dani Robert’s beautiful voice empowers the emotion as the song nears its end. - Outlet Mag - Jonathan Currinn

"SINGLE REVIEW: DANI ROBERT – CLOUDS"

Canadian singer-songwriter Dani Robert has just released her debut single and its one that’s worth discovering. “Clouds” is an intimate pop-edm ballad that explores the human connection and challenges yourself to start speaking from your heart. Her vocals have this raw delivery which showcases the pure emotion behind the lyrics before the EDM beat drops in the hook. It’s not too overbearing that the song loses it’s intimacy but it’s just enough to make it stand out from being just a ballad. However saying that, I would love to hear an acoustic stripped back version because I think her vocals would be even more emotional, raw and captivating. Lyrically this is the perfect reflection song the world needs to encourage us to focus on speaking from our hearts and to start loving one and another again. It grows on you with each listen and is a great debut from an artist I am very intrigued to hear more from. - Thomas Bleach

Learn more about Dani Robert in the following All Access interview:

Thanks for your time today! How has 2017 been treating you? Musically, did you approach this year any differently then you did last year?

Thanks for having me! This year has treated me so well. We just put out my first single ‘Clouds’ and it’s been getting an unbelievably positive response. Just hit over 160K spins on Spotify!

This year has definitely been different, I got a new management team and they’ve pushed me into so many new places creatively. I’m super grateful! I think I’ve just grown up a lot in the past year which is really evident in the big change of sounds. We really got a cool thing going with the music we’ve been able to create and define myself with.

Where does this interview find you today? Is there music playing in the background? If so, what is it? What kind of music do you listen to when you are working? What music gets you instantly out of a bad mood?

Right now, I’m at Jimmy’s coffee in downtown Toronto and some kind of nostalgic oldies song is playing in the background. I love it! When I’m working, I usually just prefer silence or white noise. I’m so connected to music that I can’t concentrate on my work! However, the lovely Leif Vollebek sometimes helps me get my work done with his relaxed and beautiful music! I can’t help but to smile when I listen to Chance’s song “Blessings” or any of his songs on “Coloring Book.” That’s probably my instant happy mood music!

Growing up, have you always wanted to be a musician? Can you recall your earliest musical memory? I read that you began writing music at just 7-years-old! What was that music like? Do you still have any of these compositions?

I wanted to be a musician ever since I was probably five or six years old. I always knew that I was meant to be a part of the music world somehow! My earliest memory is probably when I was around 3 or 4 years old. I can remember standing on the chair in the kitchen holding a toilet paper roll and singing along to oldies songs on the radio while mom was cooking! The music was all on the piano, sounded similar to Sarah McLachlan, with lyrics that were surprisingly deep for a kid I would say! The first song I wrote was called “Man-Made-Hill.” I still have some of them recorded on an old hand-held recorder somewhere!

If you weren’t a musician today, what else could you see yourself doing?

I could see myself being a painter. Time to time I’d paint images that I get while spending time alone and I know that that’s a part of me that can be blossomed and explored! Probably would be fun too!

I always like to ask artists about where they came from and how that city or town has influenced them as an artist now. So how do you think growing up in your hometown in Canada effected who you are as a musician and the art that you create?

Growing up in the farmlands of Pain Court, where your neighbours were way down the road, I spent a lot of time being by myself, reflecting, going out to the forest. Often I received inspiration from the nature around me, which seeped into my songwriting. I got inspiration from things like bent trees, birds flying around and even the clouds in the sky – which helped inspire my first single, “Clouds!”

Let’s talk about your recently released single, “Clouds.” How did this song first come together? What was the inspiration for it? Have you been surprised at all by the big positive reaction to it?

“Clouds” first started with a melody that I was playing with on this old colourfully painted piano at the Daniels Spectrum in Toronto! Then going back home to my own piano, I caught the concept while improvising on some chords and the lyrics kind of flowed pretty quickly after that. The inspiration for it was based on a personal experience I had of having feelings for a boy who I kind of sensed had feelings for me too. We never talked about it but it was always floating around, kind of like a cloud! And yea! I’ve been so surprised by the positive reactions to it! This is a song that means so much and really represents this new sound I’m diving into, so for so many people around the world to love it so much really just excites me to bits!

What was it like making the music video for “Clouds”? How creatively involved were you with the whole process?

It was so incredible, working with all the wonderful actors involved, I remember when we wrapped the video we all came together and I shared my gratitude for everyone. Their involvement and passion for being apart of the project just brought me to tears. It was such an awesome process to be apart of and witness! I was pretty involved in the whole process from the conceptualization, to searching and choosing the actors, to the actual on-set direction for the actors as well as the production! I loved being able to wear so many hats!

When do you hope to release more new music and full-length album of new songs? Are you working on that now?

I have more songs coming up that are already finished – tied in a bow and ready to go! To tell you if the release is going to be an album or in another form like an EP is yet to be determined! My management team and I are just in the process of talking to some record labels right now, which is exciting so for now just know new music is coming soon!

What are your plans for the rest of the summer? Do you have any tour dates currently lined up?

Ah I love the summer! My plans are just to continue writing songs, going to the studio and visiting home in Pain Court to see my awesome family! I’m also looking forward to performing in Montreal on August 30th! My management team and I are in the beginning stages of talking about touring within the next year, which is really exciting! You can keep posted on all the exciting adventures coming up by following my social media platforms @danirobertmusic.

Who are some of your very favorite artists or rather, what musicians have continued to inspire you and your music? What musicians would you absolutely love to work with in the future?

I’d say the musicians that continue inspire my music are Anna of The North – I love her melodies and overall sound! Alessia (Cara) too! Her style and songwriting is awesome. Of course I can’t forget Sarah McLachlan. She’s always been such a big influence on me since I was a kid! I would love to work with all these artists, Chance (the Rapper) and Pharrell (Williams) would be cool too! The list is so long!

What do you hope is the message of your music? What do you hope people continue to take away from your songs?

I remember my manager, Mic and I talking about this very thing while driving on our way to the studio one day – we both realized that a lot of my music holds a message of becoming free and finding hope. At the end of the day, I just want people to take something good and positive away from it. If I can effect someone positively by expressing myself through my music I’m happy!

What advice would you give to someone just getting started on this music path? Or even to someone young that is thinking of becoming a musician one day?

Get to know yourself. This will inform your songwriting, the people who you work with, the sounds you chose, the daily decisions you make and your overall vision for your career. You don’t need to know all the answers; you just need to know yourself! My super inspiring manager, Mic Tee always tells me, YOU steer the ship. The people who are on your team are just there to help guide and get you to your destination!

Is there anything else that you would like to share with our readers about yourself or your music?

As oddly as this sounds, I really think pigeons are awesome. My love for them started when I lived in Montreal for a year. Those feathery friends always slept on my windowsill and I got to see another side of them- their peaceful beauty!

Also, thank you to everyone who has been showing me so much love! If you haven’t yet, make sure to check out my single “Clouds” on Spotify and the official music video on YouTube right now! - Music All Access - Leah Brungardt

"Daily Dig: Dani Robert"

Dani Robert is a sensational singer/ songwriter who comes all the way from Toronto, Canada. 27th June saw this talented 25 year old drop her debut single Clouds and Oh My God this is a refreshing piece of perfection.

Robert’s introduction to music began at the age of 5, back then she learned to play the piano. Two years later Dani was writing her own songs, taking inspiration from personal experiences. Dani Robert has a burning passion for song writing and this led her to become a music therapist, helping people to express themselves through music. Here is what Robert has to say “The opportunity to use my songwriting as a way to not only express myself, my thoughts, ideas, my purpose, but to do that for others is undeniably one of the greatest gifts I have been given”.

She continues to develop her craft, playing a series of venues across Canada (Toronto Centre for the Arts, The Hard Rock Cafe).

From the material currently on Dani’s Soundcloud page I can tell she has something extremely special. Robert’s vocals were sugary sweet and her songwriting skills are on another level. Washing Machine was an upbeat piano based cut which had me picturing Regina Spektor. Then you had a rough recording of Until Morning which Danielle wrote for the soundtrack of an independent film that was shot in Cambridge and Vancouver.

Anyhow out with the old and in with the new. Last month Dani released her debut single Clouds independently. This song has already garnered 100K streams on Spotify. The track produced by Kyngs, Mic Tee (AMAG/ Cash Money/ Rich Gang), and Bryan ‘BC’ Cockett was featured on New Music Friday playlists in 10 countries all over the world (Canada, Sweden, Singapore among others).

This tantalising tune made my jaw drop, the upbeat Clouds was a mixture of pop meets folk and traces of EDM were added in for good measure. Dani Robert’s vocal tunes were candy coated and at the same time I was reminded of Kate McGill from the UK duo Meadowlark. Then you had the smooth tender lyrics which left me well and truly enthralled “You and I, you and I/ Are we scared? Are we scared?/ We can’t hold on, hold on/ To the end”. Basically Clouds is a summer anthem in the making and the song writing was utter genius. Robert’s had this to say regarding this track “Clouds demonstrates the challenge of speaking what’s in your heart, exploring vulnerability, the subjectivity of human connection, love, and time”.

11th July saw Robert’s unveil the official black and white music video for Clouds. Directed by Gord Poon and Long Truong this video tells the story of a lifelong friendship, featuring snapshots into their lives as toddlers, teens, and young adults, as they gradually develop feelings for one another. - Music Is My Radar
