A Single Step (EP) 2019

Daniel Leyes’ music is hard to categorize. His recordings cover the gamut from folk to funk, but live he is the consummate storyteller and solo acoustic performer. Leyes’ humorous, fun-loving stage presence blends perfectly with the original repertoire he performs live.

However, for most of his adult life Leyes was a closeted musician, never performing in public, instead pursuing a career in academe, where he became known as one of the most popular professors at his college.

But secretly he was writing songs on the guitar and piano. He never played in public or even for his friends or family. That was until one day he heard the music of Todd Snider and knew almost immediately that THAT was what he wanted to do. For the uninitiated, Todd Snider has been traveling the country for over 25 years. He tells funny stories, sings great songs, usually without a band, and delights his audiences in the process.

Leyes saw in Snider a kindred soul. A humorous, spirited performer who finds redemption in life's grittier people without ever being preachy. Leyes took to the vibrant open mic circuit of the Asbury Park NJ scene with a vengeance. He honed his act, wrote songs that built his public persona, and in the process became a much-loved local act. With popular favorites like “Cannabis Blues”, “I’ll Be Singing” and “A Single Step” he was soon invited to perform at the Jersey Shore Arts Center’s Songwriter’s Showcase. His appearance was so successful that he was asked to return to play the venue 5 times.

His debut recording A SINGLE STEP was released in December 2019. Produced by longtime NJ music man John Mulrenan, the full-band workups of his originals, take on a whole new life of their own. From the horn-driven title cut to “Waiting for Love” the soulful duet with rising star Sahara Moon, the album begs to be played over and over.

He will be touring festivals and smaller venues in the Spring and Summer of 2020
