Bio

Daniel Bartos - ELECTRO DIDJERIDOO / IN DUST & RHYTMS

Although didjeridoo is simple music instrument (its usually made of hollowed out trunk of a tree), didjeridoo becomes practically infinite platform for experimenting with various soundscapes and rhytmical patterns. Use of voice, trumpet hoots and pronounced rhytms along with beatbox-like techniques creates style of "organic electronica", as Daniel calls the resulting music himself.

Daniel plays didjeridoo for last twelve years. His one year trip to Australia in 2006 included also five months long visit to remote Arnhem Land, birth place of didjeridoo, where it is known as yidaki. The main fascination Daniel finds in the physical aspect of playing this instrument, which he eventually uses in his performance as well (picking up nose breath intakes, rhythmical structure of partly improvised compositions based on breathing).

Daniel points out that "the didjeridoo thus becomes amazing breath controlled sound synthesizer".

Thanks to meeting up with Michal Rataj and Hans Tammen recently, Daniel started experimenting with multichannel sound in MAX/MSP. This electro-acoustic sound evolution was preceded by his former experience with electronic music (virtual music instruments programming). Daniel ventured back into the electronic sound, but this time all the music is produced and controlled by an acoustic instrument.

In the context of contemporary didjeridoo scene, this project is quite unusual. It explores new sound frontiers and performance possibilities of this fascinating music instrument. This new context is great platform to show unusual musical possibilities of the didjeridoo.
