 Newport, New South Wales, AUS
BandPop

A classic, layered pop sound with a hint of emotion and wistfulness about it.

Biography

Daniel Dawes performed in various bands throughout the later part of the 1990’s while at university, and in 2001 became a founding member of Sydney based psych-rock outfit The Winters, a band for whom he put in almost seven years of loyal service as songwriter, vocalist and guitarist. In late 2006/early 2007 he tested the water with a string of solo shows, a move that led to the recording of a debut album “Strange Things” in 2008/09.

Upon its release via Foghorn Records/MGM in March 2009, “Strange Things” received its fair share of critical acclaim. Reviewers noted the following:

“I have to admit that I really did love this record and can see Strange Things living in my stereo for the near future. With complete respect to Daniel Dawes, I can honestly say there was not a single low point on the entire record. If you like Brit-pop, or catchy rock, you simply need to hear this album” (Nick Kays, The Dwarf.com, 29 April 2009).

“Fantastically quirky melodies and he manages to fit a lot of words in without getting into a verbal traffic jam” (Vijay Khurana, triple j, April 2009).

“Dawes’ solo album has a distinct British feel, while remaining true to his Aussie rock sound” (The Sunday Telegraph, 5 April 2009).

Tracks from the “Strange Things” album received strong support from radio, with regular plays on Triple J, 3RRR, and Fbi, including an interview on Fbi radio’s Victoria Sweetie Zamora’s afternoon show on which Dawes performed album track “High Place” live to air.

In addition to support from radio, the ABC’s “Rage” selected the film clip for the album’s title track as “Indie of the Week” (5 September 2009) which saw the clip aired in several prime timeslots on national television.

In the wake of his album’s growing momentum, Dawes performed along side Ronan Keating, Cassie Davis, Jessica Mauboy, and Wes Carr as part of Australian Record Store Day (18 April 2009).

Album track “Strange Things” was selected for inclusion on the compilation “Grow Your Own Upload 3”. Another album track, “Remember You Well” was included on the popular “Sounds Like Café” series. Both albums were released in late 2009 and are available via Foghorn Records.

Daniel Dawes’ album “Strange Things” is available in stores and via iTunes through Foghorn Records. Dawes is currently recording an EP due for release in October 2010.

Lyrics

Holiday

Written By: Daniel Witanowski

All this time
We’ve been counting on
Having fun
When work is done
And all our dreams come true

We’re on a
Holiday

We’ll take a walk
In the park
Then later on
When it gets dark
We’ll dream all our dreams till the morning

We’re on a
Holiday

I don’t mind
where we end up tonight
Lets just get ourselves into the car
And drive

We’ll find ourselves
A happy place
Can’t wait to see
The smile on your face
When all our dreams come true

We’re on a
Holiday

High Place

Written By: Daniel Witanowski

I know every silence
Is covering up for something I’ve fallen from a great hight
More then once before

I know what you’re thinking
I’ve lost all my ambition well it’s an honest world
It gives and won’t take back

Did you know it was wrong?
Did you think it ok?
Did you promise that you’d change then continue your game?
Did you leave a black stain on your family name?
If they hadn’t caught you out would you still be the same, all the same?

I know any strong place
Can be brought down to nothing well I’ve fallen from a great hight
More then once before

I know every silence
Is covering up for something I’ve fallen from a great hight
More then once before
I’ve fallen from a great hight
More then once before
I’ve fallen from a great hight
More then once before

English Breakfast Tea

Written By: Daniel Witanowski

Sweet English breakfast tea
A cloud filtered sun
Thoughts running through my head
There’s nothing to be done
Venturing out my door
I find my mind wondering

Nearer my God to thee
Listening to the wind blow
Reading the news today
A man with nowhere to go
Taking a few steps more
I find my mind wandering

I live in the town of your birth
Small corner of the Earth
You fell from your hight
You must have been drawn
By the flickering lights
That dance against the night, dance against the night
Like there’s nothing to hide

Faces appear inside
Curtains cross the window
Strung out and so uptight
They won’t miss what they don’t know
Looking around once more
I find my mind wondering

I work in the town where you play
Under the sky you lay
The stars all see the same
You must have been drawn by the flickering lights
The maddening flame
That burns into the night like there’s no one to blame

We aren’t the forgotten people
Yes, we live our lives like forgotten people
Yes, we take our sides like forgotten people
We live our lives

Venturing out my door
I find my mind wondering

Madness of King George

Written By: Daniel Witanowski

Your footsteps echoed here
It seems very quiet this
Morning

I dreamed your sheets were royal blue
That faded as the madness crept over
You

There’s something happening here
You’re sun don’t shine
You’ve been this way before
Chasing shadows down the hall
Your powders and your potions
And the madness of King George

There’s something happening here
I hear the blackbird sing his
Warning

A nation saw you passing by
They swore that they would love you till the day that you
Die

There’s something happening here
You’re sun don’t shine
You’ve been this way before
Chasing shadows down the hall
Your powders and your potions
And the madness of King George

Your footsteps echoed here
It feels like you left just this
Morning

I dreamed a sea rushed around too
and forced you into something that you never really wanted to
do

There’s something happening here
You’re sun don’t shine
You’ve been this way before

There’s something happening here
You’re sun don’t shine
You’ve been this way before
Chasing shadows down the hall
Your powders and your potions
And the madness of King George

Remember You Well

Written By: Daniel Witanowski

I remember you well
You were cutting such a swell
Clutching to a secret you were busting to tell
I remember you
Remember you so well
Oh I remember you

I remember you well
You escaped me for a spell
You didn’t think I’d notice but I know you far too well
I remember you
Remember you so well
Oh I remember you

Would you like to find a shady street and walk it with the likes of me?
Look for places that you’ve never seen and find them with the likes of me, with the likes of me

Remember you well I remember you well
