"About Daniel Diaz"

"Daniel Díaz is Argentinean. Listen to his debut recording 'The Years Alone' and you will hear the rhythms of the zamba and the chacarera. You will also hear how the musical heritage has been informed by the composer's absorption of the "outside" influences, particularly the jazz, rock, and music synthesis technology of North America. This is a new music, shaped by the irresistible influence Argentina has on her children, and by the perspective and know-how of its creator, Daniel Díaz.
'The Years Alone' has the self-assured, unassuming character of a natural merging of past and present. The 11 selections are his own compositions, based in spirit and rhythm on the folklore of his land, and feature his expressive and melodic bass playing and abilities as multi instrumentalist. Díaz's studies of jazz and classical idioms and affinity for contemporary harmony and technology are evident throughout, and put an unique stamp on his particular expression of the argentine soul.
A synthesized orchestral section may serve equally well beneath a modern bass and keyboard unison melody, or as an accompaniment to the haunting , melancholic bandoneon. Drum machine co-exists with bombo leguero (the skin-covered drum that is the heart beat of Argentinean traditional music).
Diaz is joined by a variety of South American players contributing their own musical voices on instruments both native and foreign to Argentina, including bandoneon, saxophones, quena and tabla.
The result is a music that is unmistakably infused with the argentine soul, and equally blessed with the spirit of its composer" - Dan Greenspan, Boston, 1995

"About "The Years Alone""

"..there seems to be no limits to his talents: composing, arranging, and playing bass, synths, drums, and guitar. There are some sparkling moments on his albums, some new ideas, and some glimmers of real depth. Every song has a moment of brightness...."
- Cliff Furnald, Roots World, New Heaven, USA.

"About "The Years Alone""

"Sensual, Sweet, Somber, sad, sensational, sexy, night, fog, rain, clouds, clear skies, ....are there any other words to describe this emotive music based on non traditional structures and forms? Let me just feel this music: something different again."
- April/May 1996 KVMR Program Guide, USA

"About Daniel Diaz"

Multi-talented tour de force Rating: 5*****
A brilliant 'sleeper'; hypnotic.
I don't usually go for these 1-bloke-plays-everything dazzlers but Diaz has mastery of all his instruments - guitar, basses (fretless and harmonic), drums, keyboards, melodica - the lot.

Eleven superbly crafted tracks that will inspire other instrumentalists and wow those in need of a satisfying listen.

Superb production values (Mr Diaz again, yet another talented string to his polymath bow) and a worthy tribute to DD's dedicatees, among them Miles and Piazzolla.

Cop a listen, and have credit card details ready to order. We need more like this.

"Daniel DIAZ Trio Live in Paris"

Díaz a ANSA.

"Daniel DIAZ Trio Live in Paris"

- NOVA magazine , Paris.

"About D.D.'s "Segundo Ciclo""

- Carola Faber, JAZZPODIUM Magazine, Germany.

"About Daniel Diaz's music"

10/10: It doesn't get deeper than this!
This music is deep on so many levels; the layers just keep peeling away like the skin on an audio onion! I love it. I would call this World Jazz. All the elements flow together seamlessly. Your production techniques are flawless. This is a total sound feast for my ears and mind!

Bio

The acoustic bass guitar provides all harmonic support; the unusual customized drum-set serves as the groove keeper as well as second soloist; and singing on top of it, a world class woodwind soloist with a huge array of styles and sounds in his palette. This is the the Daniel Díaz, Javier Estrella and Bobby Rangell trio.
They started together in March 2004 with a brief concert in Paris. Then, making a CD was a logical step, because of the natural interplay and understanding between them, and because of the large collection of songs (both original compositions and covers) that D.D. had been arranging for just such a trio during the past.
Some moths afterwards these three musicians met again in Angel Studios in Paris. They started playing and re-arranging some songs from the book. After a week palying and recording "live" in the studio the album was almost done. Mix down was completed by january 2005 and Timeless records scheduled release for september 2005. Du to finacial problems Timeless failed to release Lugar Comun in 2005 and 2006 , while the trio were touring and seling pre-series CDs during concerts in Italy and France. Those CDs are now sold out and Diaz/rangell/Estrella are ready to go back on the road (this time overseas) to support a formal release+distribution of "Lugar Comun".
A profound and beautifull live act; they got extraordinary response both in jazz, pop and even classical festivals (Prades, Toscana).

First CD “Lugar Comun” should be released/distributed worldwide by march 2008

This is Daniel Diaz’s current live act, an acoustic, intimate and warm sound, with a pop-meets-jazz-meet-world song list that goes beyond jazz/world circuits. This trio is ideal for small, intimate stages or great sounding (very good sound system) bigger festivals.

DANIEL DIAZ:
Born in Buenos Aires , Argentina in 1963 , Daniel Díaz began playing bass in 1980. In 1983 he started to study theory, harmony, and bass and a year later he was working as a professional, backing several singers in small clubs around Buenos Aires. During the eighties he continued studying (harmony, counterpoint, ear training etc.) and attended several courses and clinics such as orchestration with Carlos Franzetti, improvisation with Gary Burton, production and bass with Pedro Aznar, tango history and language with Horacio Salgán, and Argentine folkloric rhythms with "Cuchi" Leguizamon.
In 1992 he traveled the U.S.A where he studied improvisation (with Bruce Gertz and Oscar Stagnaro at Berklee College of Music in Boston) and bass (with Mark Egan and Percy Jones in New York City and Alexis Skjlarevsky in LA.).
In 1993 Daniel recorded his first album: "The Years Alone ", released in the US and Canada in January’1996 by North American label Green Linnet/Xenophile. The Years Alone's eleven songs combine traditional argentine rhythms like Zamba, Chacarera, Cueca, etc. with non-traditional structures and sounds inspired in rock, jazz, and classical styles. In that album Daniel Diaz played most of the parts (bass, keyboards, guitar, percussion, drums, etc.) but included guest appearances from many fine South American players. He continued his career as a leader/composer with “Segundo Ciclo”(1997) released worldwide in 2002 by Timeless Records, Netherlands.
Since 1997 he lives in Paris, France, where he’s been performing with several argentine-latin-jazz-tango groups, producing, recording and performing live.
In 2006 he completed a new electronic/experimental album: “Electro World Jam”. This LP features electronic samples, world music beats&instruments, experimental sounds and structures, haunting moods and deep melodic & harmonic content. Performed by multi-cultural musicians around the globe exchanging files and “virtually jamming” against each other’s tracks. Files assembled, mutilated, arranged, metamorphosed and edited by “Dédé” in Paris.
That same year he joined French singer Marie Daguerre’s group playing bass and keyboards. He keeps performing live with his trio all around Europe. Recently he started working for french publisher Cezame/Koka Media for whom he co-produced a double CD (La Otra America CEZ4048/4049) with many of his own composition. In that album he performed piano, keyboards, percussion, guitars and basses. He continues his work for Koka/Cezame (2007 « Drone Music » CEZ4051/4052 and “American Road book” CEZ4053/4054).

In the present he's playing with his trio, with classical baritone Jorge Chaminé and contemporary French chanson singer/composer Elise Caron and with French rock singer Marie Daguerre.

His new CD "LOW Vol.1", an audacious project performed using bass instruments exclusively, was released in july 2007.

BOBBY RANGELL:
Born in Chicago, USA, but raised in Colorado, Bobby Rangell started as a classical flutist, and discovered jazz at the age of 19. He continued to learn on his own the saxophone and the art of improvising.
He began playing professionally one year later, touring th
