"FIRST LISTEN: DANIELLE LEWIS – FLY"

This week, Welsh singer-songwriter Danielle Lewis releases her new EP ‘Fly,’ a release which will be followed by a wave of growing opportunities as she performs at BBC’s Maida Vale studio over the weekend and on Monday makes an appearance on the Welsh nightly magazine series Heno on S4C.

Talking of her EP, she revealed: ‘Fly explores the depth of my writing and spectrum of my voice. These songs are a window into growing up on the Welsh West Coast, travelling and evolving as an artist and young woman. I wanted the songs to hold a more mature and organic sound within the songwriting.’

Her name has become familiar to many in Wales and the year ahead looks set to spread her music beyond the Welsh borders following her invitation onto the BBC Wales’ Emerging Talent Horizons Project for 2016. ‘Horizons/ Gorwelion is a scheme delivered by BBC Cymru Wales in partnership with Arts Council Wales to develop new, independent contemporary music in Wales. They have this to say about Danielle:

There is an invigorating, fresh purity to Danielle Lewis’ music. Her wonderfully clear voice sounds as effortless and uncontrived as Karen Carpenter’s sounds… her songs are timeless folk pop songs that have the potential to appeal across generations, with a similar melodic nouse to Taylor Swift or Lucy Rose.

"Danielle Lewis - Anywhere is Home"

As we head into summer, we’ll all be looking for a happy holiday sound that we’ll play over and over on the car stereo as we head for the beach, the mountains, music festivals or wherever we’ll be hanging out with our besties and making memories. Anywhere is Home could be that EP.

Chirpy, catchy and filled with joy, “Anywhere is Home” is the title track from Danielle Lewis‘s third EP, a creditable follow up to her 2013 debut “Paper Hearts” and self-released “Dreams Grow”, which brought Danielle to the attention of TV and radio programmes in her native Wales and placed her centre-stage at a number of prime festivals. This is definitely a track for kicking off your shoes and dancing on warm sand – and I defy you not to sing along to the hookline ‘anywhere is home’ – with a smile as big as the sunshine!

Danielle’s voice has been compared with Karen Carpenter and, although her tone is lighter, the effortless emotion that merits this comparison is apparent in the second track of the EP “I’ll Wait”. In complete contrast to “Anywhere is Home”, this is a soulful ballad that exudes romance and demands to be heard in the arms of someone special. Lovers of female vocalists will applaud the purity and control that flows from phrase to phrase, supported by the simplest of strings.

Reminding us that Great Britain is a multi-lingual country, Danielle’s third track is a reprise of “I’ll Wait”, sung in her native Welsh. “Aros” (literally translated as ‘Stay’) brings a depth of pathos to the song which, coupled with the natural lyricism of the Welsh language, is sure to evoke a desire for the hills and valleys.

Supported by Charlotte Church’s company Bounce Publishing, and released by up-and-coming boutique label Folkstock Records, Danielle is emerging from her homeland, bringing with her a natural warmth and refreshingly clear vocals that deserve a place alongside singer-songwriters Joni Mitchell, Suzanne Vega and Thea Gilmore. - Flo Bannigan, The Revue

"‘Anywhere Is Home’ For Welsh Singer Songwriter Danielle Lewis"

Inspired by listening to Jack Johnson’s song, ‘I Got You’ one afternoon, Welsh singer songwriter Danielle Lewis thought back to her experiences of touring and performing across Australia at the age of 19, to moving from her childhood home in West Wales to the big city bright lights of Cardiff to pursue music as her chosen career.

‘Anywhere Is Home’, an uptempo guitar driven song which perfectly showcases Danielle’s pure, folky vocals. It’s quirky and boppy and defies the listener to even try sitting still in their chair while listening to it.

Danielle released her debut EP, ‘Paper Hearts’, in 2013, which found her invited to perform live on S4C TV on three different programmes (with more to come). She has also been playlisted on BBC Radio Cymru, as well as featured as Artist Of The Week on BBC Radio Wales. Danielle was additionally invited onto BBC Wales’ Emerging Talent Horizons Project for 2016, which, in partnership with Arts Council Wales, aims to develop new, independent, contemporary music in Wales. Speaking about Danielle’s music, a spokesperson from the project said:

“There is an invigorating, fresh purity to Danielle Lewis’ music. Her wonderfully clear voice sounds as effortless and uncontrived as Karen Carpenter’s sounds…her songs are timeless folk pop songs that have the potential to appeal across generations, with a similar melodic nouse to Taylor Swift or Lucy Rose.”

Through the project, Danielle has had the opportunity to perform at The Great Escape and Festival No. 6 (September, in Portmeirion, Wales). She will also have the privilege to record two songs this Autumn at Maida Vale studios. Additionally, two tracks from her bilingual English and Welsh second EP, ‘Dreams Grow’, self released in June 2015, were used on a “Visit Wales” online campaign.

Danielle’s music is published by Charlotte Church’s company, Bounce Publishing, and ‘Anywhere Is Home’ will be released on Folkstock Records on July 4, 2016.

You can pre-order ‘Anywhere Is Home’ from Folkstock Records’ Bandcamp page here. Each pre-order includes an immediate download of Danielle’s song, ‘I’ll Wait’, with versions in both English and Welsh.
