"Hollow Book Review"

Well-written, strikingly honest, and full of hope. - Jane Rubietta, author of Come Along and Grace Points

"Hollow Book Review"

If you or a loved one needs to know there really is a way out of the strong clutches of the self hatred of an eating disorder, you will want to walk with Jena through each page. You will find a new strength and a fresh hope. - Dr. Gregory Jantz, Ph.D., author of Hope, Help, and Healing for Eating Disorders

"Hollow Book Review"

Hollow pulled me into a world I knew little about, held me there with its raw authenticity, and gave me empathy for those who struggle with eating disorders. Anyone battling food issues should read this book. But more than that, anyone who loves someone in an eating disorder's clutches should scour its pages for understanding.
- Mary DeMuth, author of Thin Places: a Memoir

"Hollow Book Review"

By J.W. Bergmann

In HOLLOW, Jena Morrow writes of an inner-battle that has been there since early childhood and her fear of being found out. Reluctantly, the author makes the conscious decision to trust God and her counselors in the quest to become healthy. I found myself wrestling alongside her for the answers and in hope of resolution. Quite honestly, I became her cheerleader along the way.

Throughout the book Ms. Morrow honestly processes her struggles, shares milestones and pitfalls along the path while revealing the source of her hope and strength. Here is a great example:

“I wonder how many believers struggle in silence with taboo challenges – mental illness, addiction, obsessive thinking – because we wonder how we might be judged as followers of Christ. This must be heartbreaking to God, who longs to restore us and make us whole and whose love for us is big enough to withstand our ugliest secrets, none of which we could ever hide from His eyes, anyway.”

Readers will find this life-work to be a painfully honest, “let’s sit down and have a chat” volume of healing. I highly recommend HOLLOW to anyone who has found themselves feeling lost, confused or beyond reach. There is hope… and you will be inspired by Jena’s journey.

A word of thanks should be given to Ms. Morrow for opening her soul to us and sharing freely. This is one of the most honest, open, vulnerable, real books that I’ve read in a long time. I am certain that many will point back to the reading of this chronicle as a major mile-marker in their journey to a healthy life! - JW Bergmann

"Hollow Book Review"

By Kristin McGuire

You know, it's not very often I read a book which leaves me unsure of what to think about it but Hollow by Jena Morrow has managed to accomplish that feat. The book is an eye-opening memoir of Jena's struggle throughout her life with Anorexia, the cruel eating disorder which leaves young women (and some men) battling a distorted view of their body.

In an open and sometimes painfully frank account, Jena invites the reader to a clearer understanding of the progression of anorexia as a kind of coping mechanism gone awry into mental illness. How fear and a need for control becomes distorted, manifesting into obsessive control through food and brutal submission of the body. She describes the inner conversation and struggle she's had for most of her life, her time at Remuda Ranch for in-patient treatment, and introduces us to others (both patients and therapists) who shared the journey with her.

I confess this book was hard for me to read. As a person who has struggled with weight issues most of my life via yo-yo dieting (although nothing like a true eating disorder such as Anorexia or Bulimia) I experienced a variety of emotions while reading this book. I sorrowed over Jena's descent into vicious self-loathing. I worried over her health as she literally starved herself before going into therapy. I commiserated with her when she had trouble connecting with a particular therapist, and I cheered as she found comfort in the Lord. Even so, the strongest emotion I felt while reading this book was anger. Ridiculous, inexplicable, want to slap the author up-side the head kind of "righteous" indignation.

How dare she call herself "fat" when she obviously has never been and has no idea what it could possibly feel or be like…ever! Every time she called herself a "cow" it made me wonder what she would secretly think about me. How dare this obviously beautiful woman hate and attempt to destroy exactly what I have always wanted…the "ideal" of what everything and seemingly everyone in this culture esteems.

And that is the reason I recommend Hollow by Jena Morrow as a must-read for every teenage girl or woman!

In our society, we have a perception of perfection for face and body that is so narrow and unrealistic. Is it any wonder so many young girls and women are worried to the point of paranoia (or in extreme cases such as Jena's mental illness) about how they look, checking their "rear bumper" in the mirror to make sure it's "not too big"? WE are all so worried about having the "right" clothes, makeup, hair, and body. Companies make a fortune on the latest "fat busting" diet or technique, the face cream that will banish wrinkles forever. For heavens sake there is even now a disorder for people who become obsessed with organic or "clean" foods! God created us all as individual, unique, and marvelous in His sight yet we do not look to Him for our self-awareness but to the sinful, flawed vision of man.

There are no easy answers to the problem of body image and Hollow by Jena Morrow does not necessarily offer any, which is another reason to like this book. You will come away with a different view of your own body and a better awareness of those "skinny" girls who seem to have what everyone wants. What this book primarily offers is the clear view of our primary source of redemption, healing, and grace as we walk one day at a time in our skin.

Bio

How The Hollow Project got started. . .

In November 2008, Jena Morrow friended Heather King on Facebook. Two months later, they sat down at their local Starbucks to meet for the first time. They talked for three hours at that first meeting and discovered a mutual love for Bananagrams, books, writing, music, and God.

When Heather found out Jena had been working on a memoir about her intense struggle with anorexia, Heather knew this book needed to be shared with other women (and men) who needed a voice to express their own pain.

In May of 2010, Jena's memoir, Hollow: an Unpolished Tale, was published through Moody Publishers. As a result, Jena has had opportunities to share her story on radio and at special events across the country. The response has been enormous, because the need is great.

In July of 2010, Heather's band, Daniel's Window, and Jena wrote five songs for the "Hollow EP" reflecting this journey from despair to hope in God, based on Jena's book Hollow.

Jena and Daniel's Window are taking this message of hope on the road in an event that combines music and conversation about this important issue of self-esteem. This event is called The Hollow Project.

About Jena Morrow. . .

Twenty nine years, 7 months, 14 days and the battle still rages.

This is not a polished tale of victory but an honest, true story of fragility. Hollow recounts Jena’s daily struggle with anorexia and the God who is able and willing to reach down into the dirt. A central theme of Hollow is the surrender of control to God. His Word is interwoven throughout the story as rebuttals to the lies that besiege those engaged in any addiction.

About Daniel's Window. . .

Even with 5 albums, 3 record labels, 14 years of touring, a steady stream of die-hard supporters, regular spots with Acquire the Fire, Youth Encounter, Planet Wisdom and Youth Specialties events, plus five critically acclaimed projects (1999’s "It’s a Mystery" True Tunes Records, 2003’s "Illuminate" Cul-de-sac Records, 2004’s "Strangely Looking Forward" Crossdriven Records, 2009’s "Redefined" and 2011's "Hollow" both independent releases), Daniel’s Window admits that it’s the personal encounters with members of their audience that mean the most to each of them.

“We’ve all listened to our favorite bands and had great experiences at live concerts, but I think it means more to everyone involved when there’s a personal connection – when we’ve had a conversation, shared a meal, and spent time with people,” shares bass player Caleb King. “Those interactions off-stage are more important to me than any particular performance that we’ve done.”

These musicians are pushing boundaries beyond where members ever traveled before and have ended up with their most ambitious effort to date with their fourth album "Redefined". In doing so, they’re giving fans more to sink their teeth into and opening the doors wider for those who’ve yet to jump on board.

Daniel's Window consists of lead singer Heather King; guitarist Alby Odum; guitarist Caleb King, bass player Bill Coleman, and drummer Clayton Melocik. Their music is packed tightly with tunes that center around a theme of Christ’s omnipotent presence and how He’s the ultimate source of solace through life’s many uncertainties and insecurities. Each lyric is crafted from a deeply personal perspective that also incorporates a very vertical mindset sure to take one’s thoughts beyond this life’s cares and up towards the eternal.

If there’s any underlying element that can be derived from the band’s time together, it is the members’ fervent commitment to their faith and unwavering stance when it comes to spreading the gospel everywhere they go. Beyond trying to cash in on a craze or keep up on the current fads, Daniel’s Window seeks to excel with originality and an honorable commitment to spirituality.

“It’s always been vital for us to really present who we are as people in our music,” shares front person Heather King. “We’re not afraid to talk about the issues we’re facing, the points we’re at in our walks as believers and the thankfulness we have for the blessings given to us.”
