McAlister are literally a one-man band. Danny McAlister, does have a fine voice, and, for once, the hype surrounding him/them as “Birmingham’s best kept secret” seems to be justified. For my money, he does indeed sound reminiscent of Bono or David Gray – though less annoying than both, far less annoying, and also, somewhat unique. Danny sounds less like he’s trying to be a ‘rock star’ and instead, has something more like approaching humility on his side, with optimism and charm to spare. In fact, you can imagine the tunes going down very well in the pop charts – more interesting and upbeat than Coldplay and U2, but still garnished with a big enough hook to reel in the punters. And anything that even has the potential to annihilate Coldplay has to be worthy of our attention, surely? If McAlister can just save one impressionable youth from the evil clutches of Chris Martin and his indie-perverted chums, then all of this would’ve been worth it.
