"Big Med Playlist for The Big One - Dan McCormick - Coney Island Girl"

Review by Hal Newman --
Dan McCormick’s words in ‘Coney Island Girl’ are stand-alone gorgeous. This song is masterful on multiple levels – the understated vocals allow the listener the mental space to weave imagery around the music. I’ve never been to Coney Island, however Dan McCormick’s song allowed me to visit with my own memories of beaches, surf and the tapestry of life on the summer sea shore. The video is a keeper with sparse shots that are a perfect companion to this song. Bravo!

His debut CD “Broadway Lights” is now available on iTunes. This thirteen song collection calls to mind the days when singer-songwriters topped the charts with character-driven lyrics and memorable melodies.

"Interview with singer/songwriter Dan McCormick by Kendra Gravelle"

Dan McCormick sat in the passenger seat of his dad’s car. His dad had just picked him up in Philadelphia, where he had been recording his first album "Broadway Lights". McCormick had been spending several months traveling between Philadelphia, where he grew up, and New York City, where he currently lives.

In McCormick’s pocket was a CD containing three completed songs. His dad hadn’t yet heard any of his son’s music and was eager to listen. McCormick anxiously put the disk into the car’s CD player.
“My dad doesn’t BS,” McCormick said. “He tells it like it is. I remember it was raining out and the day had this kind of feel to it. We were listening to the song ‘Let’s Get Caught in the Rain’ and I got the sense that he suddenly thought of this differently. He said, ‘Danny, you’ve got something here.’”

For McCormick, this has been his proudest moment since beginning his music career.
McCormick’s debut album, Broadway Lights, contains 13 songs, each of which he wrote. McCormick sings and plays piano for each of the songs, as well. He described his songs as “country rock with urban themes.” According to McCormick, country rock music ideally follows characters, allowing listeners to envision themselves in the songs.

“The songs are individual,” he said. “But what helped me to play the album was to put the songs in a specific order so I had a vague image of a story.” Inspired by this story, McCormick, who is a trained playwright and actor, decided to write a screenplay based on his album. He described the storyline for this screenplay as a combination between 8 Mile and Purple Rain. “It’s about a guy struggling to beat the odds and become something, but he’s going through hard knocks to get there,” he explained.

Aside from taking piano lessons, McCormick never actually took any music classes. As he began to write music, he would go online and search “how to write good rock songs.” He also said that when he listens to a song he pays attention to the beat and whether or not the lyrics and rhymes work well. He listens closely to how the song was written and what the artist does differently than other artists.
“You’re schooling yourself,” he said. “Be curious. Never walk around the city with headphones because you’ll miss your inspiration. I keep notes of things I hear and see. You can’t do that with headphones on.”

McCormick said that his favorite thing about being in the music industry is the feeling he gets when he finishes a song. When he writes his songs, he writes the lyrics first then focuses on the music.
“Once I have the lyrics down, it’s just a lot of pecking away at the piano,” he said. “Then suddenly you have something. You are giving birth to the people, these words that have never been there before. It’s up to you to mold your song into a sculpture, and the only way to do that is to chip away at it. Some days you’ll chip all day long and some days you’ll only do one chip.”

In order to be successful as an artist, McCormick said that something other than financial incentive must be the motivation. He also said that an artist must be flexible and able to roll with changes.
“You have to allow the other energies that come your way into your life,” he said. “If I had made it as an actor right away, I wouldn’t have realized that I could write. If you get the keys to the kingdom right away, there’s no journey there. If all-of-the-sudden one of my plays had taken off I wouldn’t have discovered music. Who knows what other new discoveries I’ll have? That’s what makes life so exciting.”

Despite not having come across anything that has surprised him about the music industry since becoming a part of it, he did admit that he has faced some challenges. Because he is an independent artist, he has to do much of the work on his own. “You’re a one man army,” he said. “The most challenging thing is knowing that it’s up to you to get your songs out there. You have to be motivated because nobody’s going to do it for you.”

Although McCormick emphasized the importance of being self-motivated, he also credited his mom and dad for instilling in him a good work ethic.Another challenge McCormick said he has encountered is trying to differentiate himself from other musicians.

One of McCormick’s favorite things about the music scene today is the prominence of musicians like Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney; musicians who have been in the industry for decades and still play a key role. McCormick said he enjoyed watching Springsteen and McCartney perform at the Grammies with such a wide range of other musicians.

If McCormick had the opportunity to perform with any other musician, he said he would love to perform with Springsteen. “I love the different ways he goes about performing,” he said. “Whether my songs will connect to artists at that level is hard to even fathom. In an ideal world, my songs would get to his circle—that would be about as good as it can get.”

Bio

Having grown up in Philly, LA and New York City, with stops along the way in other big cities, much of my music and lyrics are character driven stories that I picked up somewhere along the way.  The style of the songs range from rock, country, pop, folk, jazz, blues and even Broadway!  I also love writing songs for women as well as duets.  I am also a playwright and an actor, so that unconsciously must influence my songwriting from a story point of view.  And I must add that as a singer/songwriter, I absolutely love playing with other musicians, as they help bring my songs to a whole different level!
