JOINT SECURITY STATION SHAWRA WA UM JIDIR, Iraq -
Visiting comedians served up laughter as they performed for Patriot Brigade Soldiers at the joint security station dining facility Aug. 25.
Touring comedians Scott Kennedy, Dan Naturman and Beth Sherman treated Soldiers from Companies A and B of 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light), MND-B, to dishes of their comic guile.
Laughter filled the dining facility throughout the three performances as Soldiers enjoyed each comedy routine.
"I enjoyed the show a lot, and I was not only surprised but grateful that they came all the way to the JSS," said Staff Sgt. Daniel Desoto, acting platoon sergeant for 1st Platoon, Co. B, 2nd Bn., 30th Inf. Regt. "It's the first time anyone has even considered coming all the way up to JSS SUJ."
Not only did Desoto, a Pineville, native, express his appreciation and gratitude for Kennedy, Sherman and Naturman coming to a JSS, he said he hoped the comedians had a worthwhile experience while visiting the troops.
Indications are they did.
"This is one of the best shows of the 20 or so shows we are doing on this tour," said Kennedy, who said he hopes their visit is a positive experience for the infantry Soldiers and that he hoped it provided them an opportunity to unwind and have some semblance of normalcy.
Kennedy said he understands some of the demands placed upon deployed troops and felt the opportunity to make them laugh was a great experience for him and his fellow comedians, adding that offering comic relief is his way of doing his part to support the troops and his country.
Desoto said he enjoyed all the performances and was particularly impressed with Sherman's routine, especially because she appeared unabashed by performing in front of a large crowd of almost all male Soldiers.
It marked Sherman's first visit with the troops and her first experience in general with the military.
Prior to beginning the tour, she said watching CNN and the HBO series "Generation Kill" had been her only exposure to deployed life in Iraq. Sherman said she tailored her shows to specifically entertain the troops because the audience has more fun and appreciates jokes geared toward them that they can relate to.
Kennedy, the show's headliner, has an array of comedic accolades, including a show at Harrah's in Las Vegas and various appearances on the Comedy Central network, where he was named one of the top 100 comics of all time.
Kennedy, who has made multiple trips to the Middle East to visit with deployed servicemen, said the visits are "a labor of love."
Naturman and Sherman are both first-time tour comedians and joined Kennedy for this trip. A comedian for seven years, Naturman has made several stops on the late night circuit, including appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. He has also been featured in specials with Comedy Central.
Sherman places her own stamp of comedy on the tour. She is a writer and has directed shows for the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

"Last Comic Standing: Interview with Dan Naturman"

After many of us howled to Dan Naturman’s comedic stylings on The Last Comic Standing, many of us were horrified to see him ceremoniously cut from the competition. After all, he was one of maybe 3 of the 20 comedians who received a standing ovation from the audience. Ten comics went forward; Naturman’s name was the glaring omission from the list.

In other words, Dan was fantastic! Hysterical! Witty! Brilliant!

So good that the three celebrity judges, Drew Carey, Anthony Clark, and Brett Butler (the comedienne not the ball player) ripped off their microphones in disgust and complained about it to the producers and the press. Though Clark’s walk off wasn’t captured on the show, it is reported at http://www.eonline.com/News/Items/0,1,13654,00.html.

We asked Dan a few questions about Last Comic Standing, his life, Drew Carey, his very sparsely furnished apartment, and his future.

Q: What can people do if they want to see more of you on TV?
A: I'm taping a Comedy Central 1/2 hour special in August. Don't know when it's going to air.

Q: Has NBC done anything to help your career - like a TV pilot (NBC offered a pilot to Kerri Louise called “Comic House”)?
A: NBC has offered me nothing thus far.

Q: You list Last Comic Standing 2 on your web page. Are you still connected to the show?
A: I have no further connection to the show except in people's memories.

Q: Has Drew Carey done anything to help your career since standing up for you on Last Comic Standing?
A: Going to the media in the first place with regard to Last Comic Standing forced them to show the controversy on TV and that has helped a lot.

Q: What are you doing today?
Q: Performing at clubs in New York City.

Q: What would you like to be doing in 5 years?
A: I would love to be doing movies.

Q: What's your favorite food?
A: Nothing beats a good steak.

Q: Given what the audience saw about the sparse furnishings of your apartment, has Bravo approached you for Queer Eye for the Straight Guy?
A: No.

Q: When did you first realize you were funny?
A: I used to make everyone laugh in elementary school. Don't know if I was that funny but I thought I was.

Q: What was the first joke you wrote?
A: When I was on a little league team I used to say we were undefeated. We didn't defeat anyway. Doesn't make much sense but for a sixth grader it's okay.

Q: Which comics have been your biggest inspirations? Which ones really suck?
A: I like Dave Attell, Chris Rock, Mitch Hedberg, Eddie Murphy back in the day. Not gonna go on record as to who sucks.

Q: Where will you be appearing next?
A: In July I'm at “Go Bananas” in Cincinnati. I’m doing clubs in New York City in the meantime.

Also note that Tanyalee Davis, who was cut from the show in New York, will also be performing there in the future).

Bio

Audiences remember Dan Naturman as the favorite comedian of celebrity judges Drew Carey and Brett Butler on NBC's Last Comic Standing 2 and his great performances on Last Comic Standing 6. He also has his own hysterical half hour special on Comedy Central. Dan began performing stand-up comedy while a student at Fordham University School of Law. After graduating, he decided to let $80,000 worth of education go to waste and devote himself to comedy full time. Dan's charming self-deprecating style has since made him a hit with comedy club audiences from coast to coast. He's performed at the prestigious Montreal Just For Laughs Festival and has made several appearances on CBS's Late Show with David Letterman and NBC's Late Nite with Conan O'Brien. Dan has also been seen on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live, NBC's Last Call w/ Carson Daly and CBS's Late Show w/ Craig Kilborn not to mention numerous other shows on Comedy Central. When not on the road, Dan performs in New York City clubs such as The Comedy Cellar and Caroline's.
