Meow Baby takes its kitschy album title from a line uttered by the immortally cool Telly Savalas in an episode of Kojak. It’s saxophonist Danny Lerman’s way of giving a playful salute on a record that is as fun, funky and full of attitude as the badass super cop from the 1970’s television series. Lerman aggressively pursues his rhythms and grooves with a vengeance armed with songs that mercilessly deploy inescapable melodies in rapid fire succession that hit their target with precision. Before the holiday break, we sent you the CD, which will be released February 26th.

Lerman co-wrote a dozen songs for his second album, recorded two covers (“No Ordinary Love” and “Imagine”) and reissued a track (“You Take My Breath Away”) from his top 20 debut disc, Danny’s Island. Drummer Tal Bergman (Rod Stewart, Billy Idol, Loreena McKennitt, Herb Alpert, Chaka Khan), who worked on Lerman’s first CD, not only provided exciting and exotic beats for Meow Baby, but he produced ten tracks. A few cuts were produced by seminal urban jazz artist Norman Connors. Lerman’s lethal hit squad was fully loaded with notorious musicians such as Randy Brecker, Hubert Laws, Howard Hewett, Paul Jackson Jr., Bobby Lyle, and Munyungo Jackson.

Since his last album release, Lerman traveled and performed throughout the world, including visits to Turkey, Israel, South Africa, Holland, Venezuela and Mexico. Spending time in different culturally rich locales inspired him creatively. While his music is rooted in contemporary jazz with R&B grooves and pop melodies, Lerman infused Latin, South African, Middle Eastern and World Music sensibilities on Meow Baby. Often he tapped musicians he encountered from his travels to perform on the album, which fostered credibility and authenticity.

Attacking from the start with the in-your-face title cut, Meow Baby packs serious heat. “Summer in a Hummer” is laidback, breezy and chill. An inviting mid-tempo number, “The First Time” simmers before erupting midway through. “No Words” makes an eloquent emotional statement. Laws blows a fiery flute solo on the supercharged “South Beach Serenata,” a song that sets the mood for a Latin fiesta. The first single serviced to radio, “Gotcha!” has a deep-pocketed groove that bursts into a chorus as sweet as one of Kojak’s patented Tootsie Pops. “Snoopy’s Dance” boasts a piano solo Schroeder would be proud of. A rumbling drum and bass groove allows Lerman to flex and conquer on the muscular “Saxsultan.” Audaciously venturing to the outer limits, Lerman’s sax defers the chorus to a searing violin on “Amadeus Kiss.” Highly combustible horns - including Brecker’s trumpet - ignite “Don’t GoGo There” in a scorching jam that results in a five alarm blaze mixing swinging traditional jazz, contemporary jazz fusion and lilting pop. “Baby Goes to Market” flaunts colorful South African rhythms and vocal chants. The cinematic “If Only” is an arrestingly beautiful ballad.

A seasoned performer who has shared concert stages with Herbie Hancock, Sergio Mendes, Richard Elliot, David Benoit and Eric Marienthal, Lerman, who hails from South Bend, Indiana, is anxious to preview the album release with a series of Los Angeles area performances in mid-January. Tour dates for the rest of the U.S. are now being booked. - jazz HQ

MEOWBABY

Danny Lerman’s MEOWBABY isn’t the one to sleep ya’ll. Kicking it off with Meow Baby followed by Summer In A Hummer, which by the way sealed the deal, Lerman single handedly raised the bar for new artists on the rise. Produced by Tal Bergman and written by Lerman along with Fred Kron, MEOWBABY has definitely hit the streets with a bang. Sending out shock waves of invigorating SAXtastic music, I’m sure won’t go unnoticed on the radar scanning only for exceptional material with a bling.whether you’re listening as you sip a glass of wine or as the musical backdrop of a dinner for two, softly playing in the foreground or behind an intimate conversation. This project is definitely a must have for the collection. - abyss jazz

Showcase CD
Meow Baby - Danny Lerman:
Hailing from South Bend Indiana, Danny Lerman initially enrolled at Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, intent on playing hockey - but later switched to Boston's Berklee College to pursue his musical dreams. After moving over to the University of North Texas to complete his course of studies and upon graduating, Lerman recorded his "Do You Feel?" debut in 1992 on the Steel Warehouse Records label. Subsequently, he toured extensively hitting hot spots such as Sweet Basil's in Greenwich Village, Chicago's legendary Backroom, and LA's Baked Potato.

That was followed by the 1999 issue of Danny's Island, which went on to become a top 20 hit on the R&R Contemporary Jazz chart. A third cd entitled World Jam was released in 2005, but for the most part, Lerman filled his time performing in such faraway places as Holland and Istanbul, not to mention Mexico, Finland, South Africa, & points in between, so that within the matter of a just few years, he'd gained a wealth of experience.

Danny Lerman - Meow Baby
That all brings to the present and Lerman's fourth and latest cd due for release in February, 2008. In spite of the gap between albums, Lerman is quite intent on building on the momentum he's enjoyed to this point in his career as he's chosen for backing top names ranging from Hubert Laws and Paul Jackson Jr., to Randy Brecker, Fareed Haque, and Brian Hughes. Still, it's definitely Lerman's show as he's spotlighted in a variety of settings; and, to avoid the pitfall of all work and no play, Danny named the project Meow Baby - taking the title from a line in an old episode of Kojak. Even so, the fun doesn't end there as Lerman has also selected a few carefree sounding titles such as Snoopy's Dance and Summer in a Hummer for a couple of the tracks!! - jazzlynx.com

Danny Lerman's debut album Danny's Island (1998) with guest-musicians like Fareed Haque, David Garfield or Dave Valentin made waves in the smooth jazz market and reached the top 20 on the Contemporary Jazz R&R chart. Since his last album release, Lerman traveled and performed throughout the world, including visits to Turkey, Israel, South Africa, Holland, Venezuela and Mexico.

After a long hiatus of 10 years Danny returns with his sophomore album Meow Baby, scheduled for release February 26th, 2008. The album title is taken from a line uttered by Tootsie-Pop-actor Telly Savalas in an episode of Kojak. Danny offers 15 (!) songs on his new album, 12 co-written by Danny, two covers and the re-issue of You Take My Breath Away from his first album as bonus track. This album is fully loaded with notorious guest musicians such as Randy Brecker, Hubert Laws, Howard Hewett, Paul Jackson Jr., Bobby Lyle, Munyungo Jackson and many more. Such a quality is a recipe for success. Just spread the word.

Meow Baby opens the album with Danny's thrilling sax melody. The tune is filled with Munyungo's propelling percussion and a blasting horn arrangement of Keyle Newmaster (trumpet) and Matt Franks (trombone).

If you ever need an expression of relaxation, listen to Summer In A Hummer, the right remedy for everybody under stress. Guitarist Ron DeJesus has the perfect answer to Danny's sax. Ron has recently released the CD Grooove Vol.1 in cooperation with drummer Tal Bergman. Tal did most of the arrangements, programming and the drum parts on Danny's album.

No Ordinary Love was originally recorded by singer legend Sade for her fourth album Love Deluxe (2000). Sade is still the ultimate icon of smooth jazz. Kenya Hathaway lends her vocals to Danny's sultry contemporary version. She has the pure and fresh voice to be a worthy successor on Sade's path.

Written by John Lennon and interpreted by Howard Hewett the song Imagine combines two great personalities. Hewett is one of the R&B singers who has the ability to sing jazz, shown in the past on albums of George Duke and Stanley Clarke. By the way Heads Up International recording artist Bobby Lyle is performing on both covers the keys.

Danny's soothing soprano sax whispers along The First Time, perfectly supported by Fred Kron on keys. Currently Fred's music can be heard across the television airwaves from FOX, CBS, and NBC, to CNN and everything in between.

The slow ballade No Words reveals the romantic side of Danny's musical world. With South Beach Serenata Danny shows his affinity for Latin sounds. Very authentic in the Latin sense the horn section of Newmaster/Franks. The icing on the cake is flute master Hubert Laws' brilliant performance.

Gotcha! sounds radio-like and indeed this tune is burning the radio-stations from Nashville to Las Vegas. David Benoit created his musical legend as composer of the Peanuts themes. Danny adds his own accent with Snoopy's Dance.

Guitarist Tim Kobza plays a solo on Saxsultan. He is an established Rock and Jazz artist, a studio player and sideman, playing music all over the world, who not only plays a wide variety of styles on guitar, but also produces, composes, and is a part time instructor at USC.

Some flavor of Mozart can you smell on Amadeus' Kiss. Christian Howes on violin initiates the homage to Amadeus. Howes, originally from Columbus, Ohio, has garnered international renown over the past 10 years while touring the Midwest regularly, often featuring special guests such as Rez Abassi (NYC), Federico Lechner (Madrid), D.D. Jackson, and others.

Don't GoGo There is featuring Randy Brecker on trumpet. Randy uncompromisingly gives this tune a real contemporary jazz authenticity. If Only is the smooth heartfelt counterpart.

The album finishes with You Take My Breath Away as bonus track taken from his debut album Danny's Island featuring the singer Danny Lerman. He reminds me of the young Babyface.

With Meow Baby Danny Lerman will establish his status as an accomplished sax player and composer in the smooth jazz genre. - smoothjazz.de

DANNY LERMAN BRINGS "MEOW BABY"

Danny Lerman
"Meow Baby" (***½ out of four stars)
Sugar Whiskey Records/Lightyear Entertainment

Review By: Lana K. Wilson-Combs

It's been 10 years since alto/soprano saxophonist Danny Lerman released his ambitious, debut CD, "Danny's Island." But on his follow-up, "Meow Baby," which arrives in stores Feb. 26, Lerman shows he hasn't lost his groove or any signs of a sophomore slump.

The South Bend, Ind. native who traveled the world and performed in Turkey, Israel, Holland and South Africa has incorporated many of these World Music influences on this eclectic release.

The 15 disc set opens with the breezy, title track and is followed by the soothing and hypnotic cut, "Summer in a Hummer." This isn't one of those CD's you'll be skipping around tracks as every single one is a sure-fire hit especially the potent first single release, "Gotcha!" and "Baby Goes to Market."

Unlike, "Danny's Island," Lerman wrote all the new compositions on "Meow Baby." Working with well-known producer Tal Bergman--who played drums on records by Herb Alpert, Chaka Khan and Rod Stewart among others--Lerman was joined here by talented musicians Randy Brecker, ("Don't GoGo There"), Hubert Laws, ("South Beach Serenata") Norman Connors, Paul Jackson Jr., Bobby Lyle and Munyungo Jackson.

Howard Hewett lends his extraordinary chops to a beautiful rendition of John Lennon's "Imagine," and Lerman gives a nice sax workout to Sade's, gem, "No Ordinary Love."

If you buy only one smooth jazz CD this year, make it Lerman's "Meow Baby." This is one cool cat. - Lana K. Wilson

Bio

“It’s a breath of fresh air” Trish Hennessey, WSMJ-FM, Baltimore (on Danny Lerman’s new CD, Meow Babv)

saxophonist Danny Lerman knows how to have fun. He also knows retro cool when he sees it. Lerman took a page from the 1970s when recording his second album, Meow Baby, which will be released February 26th on Lightyear Entertainment/EMI. Danny adopted old school sensibilities by utilizing live musicians and having a hand in writing all the new compositions for the disc. Tal Bergman, who worked on Lerman’s debut album, produced ten songs on Meow Baby and a few tracks were produced by urban-jazz icon Norman Connors. Radio programmers are already whetting their appetite for the CD with “Gotcha!,” a deep-pocketed groove that bursts into a chorus as sweet as one of Kojak’s Tootsie Pops.
