"Monday Magazine"

Call me dumb, but I'm still suprised when I pop on a CD by a solo artist and it's actually upbeat. So it goes with local Dan Politano on this self-released EP; the first song jumps out of the speakers in a pleasantly '80s way-Don Henley or Dire Straits somehow-and it kinda sends me back to staying up late and watching Good Rockin' Tonight. Alas, once you get a few songs in, the relentlessly clean, mainstream aspect of Politano's work becomes a bit much. But the man knows how to craft a perfect, crisp, uplifting yet melancholy pop-rock tune, and, like I say, he's tapped into something here that I haven't really heard in a while. Or maybe it's just a sound I haven't been listening for.

"Space Junkies Magazine"

DAN POLITANO from Victoria, British Columbia (Canada) provides a kick to the jaw with some exquisite all out rocking tracks found only on "Staring With My Eyes Closed." If you close your eyes while listening to this CD, you'll surely be swept away into another world.
DAN's voice is harmonious, yet stands out enough from the surrounding pop-rock like
music to produce some of the best "radio friendly" sounds that my ears have ever heard. I
could safely put DAN POLITANO up there with the likes of Bryan Adams, the Bare Naked
Ladies and a host of other great Canadian rock bands. There's not a track on this album that
doesn't tickle my fancy, it's just all around a great album.

"TV Drama Puts Smile on Victoria Singer"

Canadian teen drama Falcon Beach has yet to match the runaway popularity of its U.S counterpart, The O.C., nor does it have the same guilty-pleasure undertones of the stateside soap.

But the fresh-out-of-the-blocks Global TV drama does have its selling points, chief among those being Falcon Beach's commitment to spotlighting homegrown musical acts.

Holly McNarland, Matt Mays and El Torpedo, Sam Roberts, Bedouin Soundclash and Sloan are among the Canadian performers whose music has been featured on Falcon Beach.

Victoria singer-songwriter Dan Politano will have his name added to the list this week when his original song, Smile, makes an appearance on the show's sixth episode.

Falcon Beach airs at 10 p.m. Wednesday on Global.

Politano, a fledging indie artist, knows you can't put a price tag on this type of publicity, particularly when it comes to navigating the major label-dominated Canadian music market.

"Honestly, I would have done it for free," says Politano, who was paid $2000 for the use of his song. "But they don't need to know that."

Because of the advanced promotion, the singer-songwriter says 10 radio stations across Canada, including three in Nova Scotia, are now playing Smile.

"I sent my CD away to a lot of places, so I kind of forgot about the show," says Politano, who submitted his music to Falcon Beach producers in August.

"I didn't even think anything about it until I got the phone call in December."

His decision to apply could have long lasting implications. There's word of a Falcon Beach soundtrack CD in March, and Global TV is reporting that Disney owned U.S. broadcaster ABC family will air the series this summer, reaching a potential 87 million American viewers.

The whole scenario has caught Politano off-guard. Never did he expect this type of activity when he released his sophomore EP Staring With My Eyes Closed, which includes Smile, on July 19.

Now, he's busily making plans for an extensive tour of B.C. and Alberta in the spring. Politano hopes to make it out East as well, but that may have to wait.

"I've got to pay off my equipment first," he jokes.

"Something to "Smile" about"

In other local news, singer-songwriter Dan Politano got some good news recently when he learned one of his songs was going to be featured in a new TV series. "Smile", an upbeat, radio-friendly track off Politano's 2005 EP Staring With My Eyes Closed has been chosen for the background sound for Global's new series, Falcon Beach (described as a "Canadian style OC").

After seeing a posting on www.livevictoria.com calling for original Canadian music, Politano sent off a copy of his disc. "But I didn't think much about it until about three weeks ago, when I got a phone call," he says. And did they tell him how "Smile" was going to be used? "Yeah, there's a guy named Jason who's in a wakeboard competition, and there's girl who moves to town that he likes," explains Politano. "My song's going to be playing whille he's competing and again when he realizes she's there watching him. Hopefully it'll be pretty good."

And what's a song on a Canadian TV show going for these days? A cool $2000, says Politano. "They actually called me back a week later and asked me if they could use it in another scene, too," he says. (Alas, no extra cash for that though.) And if the series is successful enough to spawn a soundtrack, will he be on it? "We haven't discussed that yet," he laughs. (But it probably won't hurt that "Smile" is also being released as a radio single this week.) Falcon Beach debuts this Thursday night, but Politano's song won't be heard until the sixth episode, airing February 9. But you can catch Politano this Wednesday night when he opens for Tom Hooper at an all-acoustic show at The Central.

Bio

Dan Politano’s Sophomore EP, Let Me Out has what you would call real fire power. Being recorded at Baker Studios in Victoria, it was produced by Joby Baker who’s worked with artists like The Cowboy Junkies, Alex Cuba and The Paperboys.

“It was great working with him. He is so talented. I brought him songs that I didn’t really know what to do with and he made them sound great” explains Dan, beaming about producer Joby Baker. A one time touring musician now an in-demand producer, he played drums, piano and shared the bass with Dan on the three tracks.

Dan’s debut EP Staring With My Eyes Closed was released in 2005. Being produced by Juno Award winner John Webster, it saw three singles released. The second single, Smile was licenced to the Global and ABC series Falcon Beach which went on to be licenced in over 30 countries.

In 2006 he was a finalist in The David Foster Star Search in BC. This all led to him opening for some bigger names in Canadian music. Bands like Jets Overhead, Maurice, Tom Hooper (x-Grapes of Wrath), Winston and two sold out shows for Matthew Good.

The new EP, Let Me Out is titled after Dan’s writers block. “I went through a rough time where I couldn’t write anything. I was so frustrated with it I wanted to be let out of whatever it was I was going through,” says Dan.

The song Shattered Dan wrote about a friend who went through a tough time with drugs. He made a video for the song that has facts about Crystal Meth. Half of the money from the downloads of the song will be donated to The Crystal Meth Society of BC.

Let Me Out is the second release on Dan’s own label Solo Records.
