""Last Chance To Do Nothing" CD review"

Dan Sheridan is a singer/songwriter from Washington DC. He decided that corporate life was not his cup of tea, and moved to Austin to follow his musical path. Before leaving DC, he recorded Last Chance To Do Nothing as his attempt at.... well, his last chance to do nothing. Taken in it's entirety, Last Chance is a look into Dan's heart and mind. Mostly poppy, upbeat songs, there are a couple thrown into the mix that'll make you sit back and say "Woah... the happy guy's got a dark side?!"

My favorite track is definitely "Passing Concerns," which I *always* request when I get the chance to catch Dan's live shows. At some point, everyone's had a time when something was "fine for the minute." You're content, you know there's something else out there, but you're not really wanting to change the status quo. "Why pursue a change when life is comfortable enough?" Musically, it's poppy... but the lyrics are much deeper than your first impression.

"Reprisal" is our first look into Dan's dark side. The music's a bit heavier, a bit darker, the vocals a bit angry. "Mirror" shows us more of Dan's wavering thoughts about his current path, and I absolutely love the music on this one... so thought-provoking. "Pizza Guy" has more of a smooth jazzy, feel. There's even a track dedicated to his pets, the Chinches! They've been a big part of his life for years, they're part of the artwork on the CD, and "Fair Warning" is a quick glimpse into life with a Chinch. "The Prince" takes us back to Dan's happier side.... at least musically. Listen close to the lyrics, "it seems the circle has an end that never leaves me quite where I began."

Another favorite of mine is "Two Years Out Of College With A Degree In Communications." Damn, that's a mouthful! The music is beautiful, Dan's voice is beautiful and so clear. The lyrics describe a tumultuous relationship for Mrs. Tuesday Night.

All in all, this is a CD that finds itself in my CD player on regular rotation. You can check out some of the tracks on his mp3.com site, or pick up a copy of the CD at a live show. Music that's relaxing and easy to listen to... can't go wrong there.

Bio

The origins of Dan Sheridan’s melody driven, acoustic based rock can be traced back to the humble bars of Blacksburg, VA but truly came of age in the dynamic music scene of Austin, TX. Born and raised just outside of Washington DC, Dan studied violin and piano before taking up the acoustic guitar and falling in love with the craft of songwriting. Dan's debut solo effort "Last Chance to Do Nothing" was recorded near Berklee College of Music in Boston in late 1998. Dan’s latest release, "The Gravity of Habit" was recorded with Dan’s veteran group in Austin and completed upon his return to Washington DC. It is a return to the hook-driven, thoughtful, dissections of the things in life that move us. Whether describing emotion, introspection, or pouring over the thoughts within a single moment, each song invites one to take a deep look into its meaning or to simply enjoy the sound at its musical surface.
