"Indie Sounds Top 10 of 2007 - 7. Dan Torres"

I am not sure whether this is another 'Out of
Town' placing … as Dan seems to be
spending a lot of time in Oregon of late.
Fortunately, he's making regular trips back to
NYC … playing back at the Rockwood and
scoring some great opening slots at larger
venues like the Highline and the Bowery.

Whether it's solo or with a band, Dan puts on
a thoroughly engaging and enjoyable show,
but never forgets the essentials - making sure
the audience knows of his next gig, his
website, to tip the bartenders … it's simple
stuff that 90 percent of performers forget.
Nice to see someone with their shit together. - Indie Sounds NY Issue 29

Bio

“amazing” – Tina Shafer – New York Songwriters Circle

“...a new prophet for the hopeful who own a tear-stained copy of 'Grace'” - Ben Krieger (Jezebel Music)

"a razorsharp songwriter" - Jim Kaminski (Tower Records)

Dan’s first ever showcase in New York secured him bookings for 3 international showcase events, a prime time TV appearance on FOX TV (broadcast to over 45 Million homes), a show at the 700 capacity Highline Ballroom in NYC, synchronisations of his music into various films and tv shows, and an artist endorsement from Martin guitars. Far from a normal outcome to a show, but then Dan is far from normal:

With the intent to evade the "singer" role that is typically attached to "songwriter", Dan Torres at first looked to others to add vocals to his songs. Although he found his "voice" early on as a songwriter and musician, it took some trial and error to discover his singing voice, which is anything but typical. Pushing the limits laid down by artists like Robert Plant, Ours, and Chris Cornell, it’s almost impossible to believe that "singer" and "songwriter" didn’t always go together for Dan.

Inspired by life experiences and the world around him, he began to compose original songs. While attending music school, Dan continued his pattern of complementing traditional education with a self-imposed curriculum of popular music by artists like Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, and Tonic.

Life is a process of false starts, wrong turns, dead-ends, and finally finding the right path. Dan has made many journeys, from his birthplace in Germany, to his youth in New Jersey, and his recent success in the New York music community. There is no question that Dan’s profile is growing exponentially across the US with a similar growth across the UK too. Dan is a prime candidate for cult radio and for cool culture TV – if The Old Grey Whistle Test still aired, he’d be on there every week. Dare we also mention the many Jeff Buckley fans now sitting up and wringing out the handkerchiefs of tears and thinking that this boy Dan is here and capable of filling ‘that space’…

Dan captivates rooms full of total strangers with the pure emotion and natural talent he puts into his music. His unique style of writing pushes the limits of his vocal range to produce a powerful and heartfelt sound. Dan performs alone when the environment is suited for it, but also packs venues when performing with his live band or his percussionist. His music captures the thoughts and feelings of our generation with a genuine honesty that cuts through the piles of generic ‘singer songwriters’ that stifle the industry.
