21st Century Honky tonk

Biography

Dan Whitaker leads The Shinebenders on a honkytonk excursion through the past, present and future.  The Chicago band has been forging its own version of country music for over a decade behind Whitaker’s songs and an unwavering desire to perform. Founded in 2002 the group has been entertaining audiences with countless shows in Chicago and the Midwest while supporting their independent releases.

Long-time band mates The Shinebenders have backed Dan since their formative residency at the defunct Hotti Biscotti. The Shinebenders include Earl Power on bass, Belden “Trip” Kimball’s on acoustic guitar and Chase Jackson’s on drums.

Dan Whitaker’s history in Chicago independent music goes back to the late 1980’s with DeKalb punk-funk favorites June Bug Massacre, 1990’s with the Americana-blues-rock band Great Plains Gypsies, and most recently Chicago jam-rockers The Gyps. He also currently plays with Western Grand, featuring Jay Harris.

Lyrics

Shinebender

Written By: Dan Whitaker

Well, I'm running from the law, I've been fighting with my paw
and my teeth are all falling out
I've been huffing from a rag, all my pants are starting to sag
and I'm loosing in a rout

I was working at the mill, when I had a little spill
that landed on the boss

that's when I lost my job, started dressing like a slob
and calling everybody hoss

I'm going on... a shine bender
yes, it's time to press my luck, so I'm loading up my truck
with white dog in a jar, that's bound to take me far

going on a shine bender
a couple weeks is just enough, to appreciate that stuff
so brew me up some shine, and help me loose my mind

well I finally got a jug, and I drank me down a slug
just to see if it was real

my throat began to burn, and my thirst began to yearn
for a total liquid meal

so I had another swig, and began to dance a jig
as I howled up at the moon

and then before too long, I couldn't tell me right from wrong
as I went off chasing coon

I'm going on... a shine bender
yes, it's time to press my luck, so I'm loading up my truck
with white dog in a jar, that's bound to take me far

going on a shine bender
a couple weeks is just enough, to appreciate that stuff
so brew me up some shine, and help me loose my mind

Going Downtown Tonight

Written By: Dan Whitaker

I love my girl as much as I can
but I won't punch cattle for no damn man
goin' downdown tonight
you stayed out last night spending my money
now all the boys are calling you honey
goin' downtown tonight

tell me baby, how did you know
I really didn't have any dough
goin' downtown tonight

you hair was messy and your shirt was torn
your pant legs frayed and your shoes were worn
goin' downtown tonight

goin' downtown with my ten dollar bill
gonna look for a woman and drink up my fill
when all my money is gone would you buy me a drink
if you could,I'd be thankful if you would

smokin' that plant, pokin' that hay
makin' that fourty-five dollars a day
goin' downtown tonight

I need me a woman that won't say no
I need me a gal that knows how to sew
goin' downtown tonight

I woke up last night in the middle of a dream
ain't had a woman since late last spring
goin' downtown tonight

one, two, three, four, five, six, seven
I won't go to hell and I can't go to heaven
goin' downtown tonight

goin' downtown with my ten dollar bill
gonna look for a woman and drink up my fill
when all my money is gone would you buy me a drink
if you could, I'd be thankful if you would

Highs & Lows

Written By: Dan Whitaker

well, I'm out here at the bar again this evening
and I still can feel the lows of last night's highs
but the bartender is smiling, and the music here is swinging
and there's always time to tell a few more lies
yes, I'm drinking down a beer, and that's no problem
but the whiskey bottle's calling out my name
a friend gave me a toke, and I lit me up a smoke
and compared to this night, last night now looks tame

well, the night plays funny tricks to the lonely
and the lonely are the only ones I know
yes, it's happy to be glad, how it hurts to feel so sad
and every high will fall down to a low

well, my wife just called and she left me a message
she said, "don't be staying out too late tonight
you have to wake up with the kids tomorrow morning
and that early sun tomorrow will be bright"

but it's too late now to turn back from the feeling
of the magic in this moment of being alive
so I'll have one more of everything I've been doing
and I'll ease my mind by knowin' I can't drive

well, a night plays funny tricks to the lonely
and the lonely are the only ones I know
yes, it's happy to be glad, how it hurts to feel so sad
and every high will fall down to a low
and every high will fall down to a low
