Dan Zappi

BandPopSinger/Songwriter

I write acoustic songs with a strong narrative element,so stories such as a leaflet boy's struggles with indifferent passers-by,common love obsessions and waiting for THAT sms,a king that won't laugh,a kid growing up in the slums of Sao Paolo etc. The style of music varies from story to story.

Biography

In singing and writing songs I try and combine three important things in my life: music, stories and theatre.
I started writing songs at 14, inspired by The Doors, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley and all kinds of music I was listening to at that age. My friends and I formed our first bands, we had our first gigs, first everything!
Then at the age of 19 I joined an italian theatre group (I'm anglo-italian) as an apprentice actor, and stayed with the group for 5 years. Here I kept writing songs as well as acting, and I suppose theatre and "telling a story" began to seep into my songs at this point.
I moved back to the UK last year to pursue song-writing feeling that this was the art-form that truly allowed me to combine everything I wanted to express, and I currently live in London where I play the acoustic music circuit.

Piccadilly People

Written By: Dan Zappi

Piccadilly people with their ipod earphones on
Mobile conversations with Mr.Paris and Miss New York
Tanned family fathers and dyed blonde sexy mums
Strolling with their cameras and their perfect blue eyed sons

I came to the city of London to sing the songs I write
But here I hand out leaflets in order to survive
Some of you might think it's an easy job to do
But like anything it's easy or as hard as you want it to

Nos, nos, nos again
These people are like transparent doors
I knock into indifference and inside of me it hurts
It hurts to be rejected because I didn't ask for much
It hurts cos I've been rejected
By the one I love

And the Piccadilly people come and go
How I wish that I could be as sorted out as you
You succesful men with women by your sides
I hope I'll be successful but I hope I don't ignore the leaflet guy

Cos it's..

Chorus

So I try and hide the tears behind a smiling mask
I'm feeling like the clown whose tragic smile is welling up
And I try to do my job to help me to go on
But today I'm mourning you today my heart's a broken song

That goes..

Chorus

Oh Piccadilly people won't you take a leaflet if you please
I'm just like you just poorer and I'm in pain, oh can't you see?
Can't you feel another's sufference or are you blind to all but shops
As you chat to Paris and New York but how about the brother you forgot?

Taking..

Chorus

So Piccadilly people I'm going home
Back home to the suburbs back to being alone
Back to my guitar that's always there no matter what
Goodbye my love goodbye, I've made..... another song

Yes, yes, yes again!
I'm singing out my life cos I want more
I want to taste each step of it
This life is mine even when it hurts
It hurts to be rejected but now I've understood so much
There's more to being rejected
There's more to being rejected
There's more to being rejected
By the one you love

Common Love

Written By: Dan Zappi

My life goes on a strike awaiting your reply
Inside the horse is restless and has blinkers on his eyes
The stable boy’s gone crazy cos there’s nothing he can do
The horse is kicking out in fury, there’s not enough room
So all that I can do is try and listen to the storm
And catch the lightning in this glass and put it in a song
And taste the electricity feed into dreaming spires
In dreaming spires of madness in this city of desires

Wouldn’t it be great to not be needy?
Be needy for someone in my life
Why can’t I sit back and watch the comedy unfold?
Maybe I could even learn to laugh
Maybe I could give a little chance
To this common love

Boring, I get boring when you’re around
I ask questions filling silences with cover-ups of sound
And I feel like I’m fourteen, I feel like a teenager
I cringe to see I can have a stomach ache for a complete stranger
The more I say “chill out” the more I’m burning at the stake
The more I try to sleep the more I’m lying wide awake
But it’s humbling to be such a fool for love at least I know
The serious guy I thought I was is nothing but a show

Wouldn’t it be great to not be needy?
Be needy for someone in my life
Why can’t I sit back and watch the comedy unfold?
Maybe I could even learn to laugh
Maybe I could give a little chance
To this common love

I’m gonna go to town and have a coffee, watch the world
I’m gonna get right out of here, I’m gonna unload
This weight upon my stomach, like a meal I can’t digest
Or is it hunger for a stability that’s constantly upset?

Then suddenly your sms text message on my phone
Vibrating in my pocket sending suspense through my bones
I try to be prepared, I think “it’s probably a no”
Pessimism helps cos you can’t fall from low to low

I go to press the button to “unlock my destiny”
I go to read the message whether she’ll come out with me
By now my lame attempt at staying calm has been submerged
By a tidal wave of hopes that I was hoping to surf on
Here goes, I read the message here’s the climax of my tale:

“Sorry I couldn't reply to your message, I was working but yeah let’s go out what time shall we meet, and where?”

I exhale

I’m like a tortoise that was upside down upon its shell
The hand of God has spared me from the sufferings of hell
And I feel so damn relieved and so pathetic all at once
I run back to the front door and do a silly little dance!

Oh wouldn’t it be great to not be needy
Be needy for certainties in this life?
Why can’t I allow for all the fear to crumble down?
Maybe I could even learn to dance
Maybe I could give a little chance
To this common love

Oh my love oh my darling I've hungered for your touch a long lonely time.
And time goes by so slowly, and time can do so much, are you still mine?

Oh this common love makes me feel so..

Alive.

Sitting On That Marble Bench

Written By: Dan Zappi

Sitting on that marble bench, waiting for the midnight bus
The church behind my back, the tramps asleep
Between the pillars in their sleeping bags
And another BMW of men draws up to an American girl

Working as a waiter leaves me buzzing from head to toe
I’ve been chatting up and cracking jokes
I’ve been tipped, I’ve been a brilliant host
I’ve tried to make the job as enjoyable as I can
But I still feel like a marionette being tugged this way and that
And now my body needs a bed
But my head
Wants to roam these drunken streets

But I’m a little late for this Saturday night
The drinking’s turned to singing and the singing’s turned to fights
I’m on a different planet, I am not drunk, I have no friends with me
So why the hell did I stay out? I knew how it would be!

But this magnetic field that pulls my magnet to your bars
Is strong after you’ve slaved away all night to pay the rent
And you feel like you’ve missed out on all the fun that’s being had
And you want to squeeze one last drop out,
To give it one last chance

And you know that it’s a waste of time
But meanwhile it’s gone two o clock

And you’ve had a few drinks with yourself
And you’ve spent all the tips that you’ve earned
And you 've skimmed the surface of a conversation with a girl
Nodding as she tells you how she’d like to travel around the world.
Back out on the streets there’s only echoes left by now
After the fun comes bed, and now there’s only me about

Sitting on that marble bench, waiting for the sun to rise
The smell of bread in the air
The sound of shutters letting in the light
And another day has come....

The bus is here
I'm going home.

Human Condition

Written By: Dan Zappi

Human Condition

Centipede oh centipede who killed you with a stick?
A man who lost his legs in battle killed me with his stick

Nightingale oh nightingale who put you in a cage?
A woman rich of all but love put me in this cage

Oh it’s human
Oh so human
But maybe too human
‘Cos it sounds just like the law of nature

Lioness oh lioness who made out of you a carpet?
A man who wore a dozen medals but still hunted after his courage

Oh it’s human
Oh so human
But maybe too human
‘Cos it sounds just like the law of nature

Centipede oh centipede who killed you with a stick?
A man who lost his legs in battle killed me with his stick

Nightingale oh nightingale who put you in a cage?
A woman rich of all but love put me in this cage

Lioness oh lioness who made out of you a carpet?
A man who wore a dozen medals but still hunted after his courage

Oh it’s human
Oh so human
But maybe too human
‘Cos it sounds just like the law of nature

When I'm sure that it's you that I'm talking to
When I give advice like it's God's own truth
When I think that I am listening
When it feels so right when I'm bollocking
When I paint your face with the colours of my heart
Without knowing what those colours really are
It's a state called subjectivity
But most of the time I believe I'm free

And I'm human
Oh so human
But maybe too human
Cos it feels just like the law of nature

Further Down The Line

Written By: Dan Zappi

Young men, young women, colourful, alive
Now the minute’s black the next is white
Laughter turns to weeping in the blinking of an eye
Boredom turns to blushing when she passes by

I have simply lived myself a little more
I’m really not that further down the line
I love to watch your games, your newfound pains, the way you own the world
The way we live become our way of life

One hundred different characters, one hundred different cues,
I feel like I’m a stage, what are these moods?
And how about that all familiar fear of messing up?
It still comes out when something big is coming up.

Chorus

I know what it means to go elsewhere when things outside
Are just too much I still play dead from time to time
To blame it on the world that cut your wings so you can’t fly
Whilst biting at a Big Mac and wearing Nike shoes

Chorus

Yes I have felt rejection, the pain of being obsessed
I even started thinking “I’ll never have sex”.
Of writing songs and poems till the middle of the night
The girl I turned goddess is still idolatrized.

Chorus
