BandRockSinger/Songwriter

Moving seamlessly between Solo Artistry & Session-Singing, Thena Dare is the real deal. Her original songs blend Folk, Jazz, Soul & Rock in pure, mellow harmonic grooves that will pierce your soul. Whether singing interpretively or rocking her own tunes, Thena is at home.

Biography

Thena Dare is the perfect combination of old-school, well-crafted songwriting and a voice that is fresh and all her own. After exploring her naturally folksy roots in the traditions of such greats as Joni Mitchell and Paul Simon, Thena decided to pursue her interest in Jazz. This pursuit led her to study Voice at the prestigious Thornton School of Music at USC, earning her a BS in Jazz Performance, and lending her years of tutelage under Grammy-nominated Tierney Sutton, and former Count Basie singer Carmen Bradford. The effect of Jazz on Thena's music has allowed her an easy transition into her seasoned mix of Folk, Jazz, Soul and Rock, which she refers to as "FAZZ."

In addition, Thena’s uncanny ability to perform under pressure, singing with maturity and control, yet without sounding contrived, is a characteristic that has set her apart as a session-singer. Hired to sing on Demos for established songwriters in the Los Angeles area, Thena has been honored to have her tracks placed on hold by such well-known artists as Carrie Underwood and LeAnn Rimes.

Thena's goal is simple: to make music she believes in, that others can believe in too. In a world full of people looking for a voice, Thena Dare has found hers.

Lyrics

Jericho

Written By: Thena Dare

Got a place down in your soul
Got a place down in your soul
Well you know you’d like to go
To that place down in your soul

Nobody sees
Nobody knows
Jericho

Say you’re gonna build a wall
Say you’re gonna build a wall
It’ll never, never fall
When you go and build that wall

No one can hurt you
No one at all
Jericho

But don’t you know
It’s gonna tumble down
When we shout out
We blow the trumpet sound
You’re going down
And it’s a beautiful sight
When you come undone
Everything will be alright

Don’t you wanna let it in
Don’t you wanna let it in
You’re gonna heal, you’re gonna mend
When you go and let it in

If you wanna let go
Take the road to
Jericho

Got a place down in your soul...

Love Like This

Written By: Thena Dare

You’re the black in my coffee
The stars in my night
And money can’t buy
Something so sweet

And I’m so rich
Cause’ baby, you’re gold
Love like this
Can’t be bought or sold

You’re the light comes at dusk
My favorite time of day
And I can’t stay away
From something so sweet

And I’m so rich
Cause’ baby, you’re gold
Love like this
Can’t be bought or sold

Everything has reason
Everything has light
What could I buy
Worth more than this?

You’re the silent prayer
At the end of my day
At the end of myself
Came something so sweet

And I’m so rich
Cause’ baby, you’re gold
Love like this
Can’t be bought or sold

Love like this
Can’t be bought or sold

Spotlight

Written By: Thena Dare

I had always thought I wanted to be
On a stage in front of everyone watching me
The way it makes you feel- like everything you say is real
Like maybe you could change things

But now I'm in the dark underneath a solitary light
Trying to fight this metaphor for my life
And the feeling this light I hid behind
Is making me blind

When you're beneath a lonely spotlight
Everything seems to be so bright
Every eye turns to watch your anguish
Thinking everything's alright

Open your eyes!
Listen to the radio playing in your soul, now, and
Don't be so surprised
To hear your voice
Singing it...

This is how it feels waking from a sleep
To find beauty that's anything but skin-deep
It's not on my T.V. or in the dozen magazines
Littering the landscape of my dreams

But I can feel it on my face, feel it in the sun
I can hear it in the voice that's calling me to come
And just be
Who I was made to be

When You find you're living in a spotlight
Everybody seems to know your name
But if they can't see beneath the surface
Are they to blame?

Open your eyes!
Listen to the radio playing in your soul, now, and
Don't be so surprised
To hear your voice
Singing it...

Oblivious

Written By: Thena Dare

God -where am I tonight?
Shunned beneath the fear and fright of this
Mess- the boy has forsaken me
He went and stole my heart away
And it's taking me a moment to recover
From feeling like such a fool to believe in the
Miracle of reciprocity

What was I thinking when I told you...
I think you're the sum of everything that's sweet
But you were totally oblivious...

You know you didn't have to be so nice to me
You didn't have to make me love you
If you don't love me
You know it doesn't have to be you
It's just that I thought that it could be
somebody, like you

God -where have I been?
Tunneling in the clouds again
Reeling with the love of him
Well, I guess I made a big fat assumption

Love- it was a mistake
To stick myself out there as the bait
To take a risk on a really good thing
Only to come up empty again

What was I thinking when I told you...
I think you're the sum of everything that's sweet
But you were totally oblivious...

You know you didn't have to be so nice to me
You didn't have to make me love you
If you don't love me
You know it doesn't have to be you
It's just that I thought that it could be
somebody, like you

Well at least now I know
Where to find the undertow
At least now I know where not to go…

You know you didn't have to be so nice to me
You didn't have to make me love you
If you don't love me
You know it doesn't have to be you
It's just that I thought that it could be
somebody, like you…

A Part of Me

Written By: Thena Dare

A part of me would love
To stick around here
But the voices and the language are
Foreign in my ear

I’ve tried and tried and still
I haven’t found that groove
Looks as thought it’s time…

To move on
To that place I know
The solace in the arms
Of the freeway’s yellow lines
Carry me home

Beneath the blazing eyes
From the desert and the skies
Warm into the harbor
The ardor of the wise

All the blood in my veins is flowing
Like a stream flows into the sea
I gotta get up and hit the road man
The wanderlust is killing me

I know I’m moving on to better things
Bigger but not too big
Even as the ocean is not too small
To welcome home
Every stream that comes home to call
