"Darin Warner"

You never know where inspiration is going to come from. I must admit that I have grown tired of arguing about how things are going and how some of us would like for things to be like. After all, to each his own. Music will always be music anyhow, and whatever the label they want to virtually and literally manufacture for this or that other sound, you can still raise your hand and ask a question about it, maybe two, but you will never get a straight answer. In the spirit of the newborn year, I will bury my hatchet and focus on what matters most to me, which in this case I happen to be able to call it Country Music, just because that is what it is.

Inspiration is a very fragile and unique concept. When it arrives it tends to stare at you in the eyes until you decide to do something about it. Mine came from the far away land of Australia a couple of months ago, and somehow it managed to reorganized some of my priorities, and opened doors that had been closed for a little while deep down in my Country soul. Therefore I owe a great deal to singer, songwriter, Darin Warner, and to his impeccable “Still Pictures” (2008). I always pay my dues.

Darin Warner loves Country Music. Ever since he first laid ears on his father’s performances on stage as a little kid, young Darin started to develop a sense of raw musical perfection that very few are able to even flirt with, let alone make it his. A few awards, including the Male Vocalist of the Year at the South Australian Country Music Festival as well as at the South Australian Champ of Champs, both in 2007, are nothing but a warning to the world that something extraordinary and wonderfully Australian is happening in Country Music once again.

I should say that if you like Honky Tonk music this will be your lucky day, but that would do no justice to this project. There is so much more about it. Twelve original songs fill this album with some of the best Country songs I have heard in the past few years. From the Honky Tonk corner of “What’s doing me”, “What you see”, “A Woman Like You” or “The Bottom of a Glass”, to the love mourning exercises of “Another sad song” and “Still Pictures”, to the blues oriented experience of “Man of your dreams”. And yet, so much more! Lately it feels like everybody with a few minutes to spare can write a Country song, but the truth is that not everybody can write a good Country song. I was amazed and pleased to realize that this album contains twelve great, honest, sometimes heartbroken and always Country, songs signed by Darin Warner. It sure has been one refreshing adventure for my spirit. Just the way Country Music was always meant to make you feel like.

Merle Haggard and George Jones couldn’t have asked for a better student.
