"Stream: Dark Furs, ‘Hearts (F*ck You, Goodbye)’"

Indie-pop trio Dark Furs — U.K.-born Suzanne May along with guitarist Chad Philipps and drummer Nathaniel Meek — released dreamy EPs in 2013 and ’14, and today they kicked off the new year with a new single, “Hearts (F*ck you, Goodbye)” (available on a name-your-price basis). It sounds like a farewell, but it’s only a kiss-off, the band promising more new tunes in 2015. It also sounds like the Sundays and the Cocteau Twins, with May and Philipps trading call-and-responses amid a lush swirl of reverberated guitar. It’s a tart follow-up to last August’s second EP, “En L’Air,” which saw Dark Furs ratchet up their dramatic mood swings. So … hearts.

"New Release: Dark Furs – ‘Hearts (Fuck You, Goodbye)’"

’m so stoked to be hearing some new music from LA band Dark Furs. They were one of the first bands I wrote about on this blog and to see that they’re living up to their product is the best feeling. Up to this point they haven’t disappointed and they don’t plan on it with new single ‘Hearts (Fuck You, Goodbye)’. It’s fits the bill of the moody rock that they’ve labeled themselves, and with Suzanne Mays insane voice that (I’m quoting myself, sew me) “travels into the deepest and highest territories of vocal country”, they create a track worth blasting in the car. It’s fun, it’s moody, it’s exactly what you’d expect from a song with it’s title. Listen below and catch them at Hollywood Sound Studios on Jan 31st or at Bootleg on Feb. 10th. - The Musickla

"DARK FURS – DARK FURS (EP)"

Unique and commanding vocals. Dreamy instrumentation. Dark Fur is simply amazing. Their five track EP will definitely be getting a lot of attention soon. Suzanne May and Chad Philipps make up Dark Furs and have an extremely bright future ahead. Listen the EP below. - Visions of Music

"SONIC REDUCER Dark Furs "Dark Furs" (Self-released)"

Dream pop dominates alt.rock these days, as well it should. Anyone who felt shoegaze—dream pop's baby daddy or kissing cousin, depending on who you ask—just came and went (not with a bang but a whimper) should be tickled by the resurgence of this jangly, intoxicating soundscape. An outstanding new exemplar is Los Angeles trio Dark Furs, which features London-born singer and keyboardist Suzanne May along with two Yanks, guitarist Chad Philipps and drummer Garrett Henritz. Their eponymous five-song EP was a staff pick on Bandcamp, and they made Deli Magazine's Top Ten list. After one listen, it's easy to see why. You can definitely hear the LA and UK influences at work in equal measure here—like Ride with a surfer's tan. This is a must-download for 2013. (M. Brianna Stallings) - Alibi.com

"“WON’T SEE ME” MUSIC VIDEO BY DARK FURS"

Dark Furs is British vocalist Suzanne May and SoCal guitarist Chad Philipps. Based in Echo Park, the coed duo’s indie rock is unapologetically deep as if coming from a heavy soul and tone that naturally drowns your mood with mused emotions. They recruited a drummer (Garrett Henritz) and the producer Dan Long (Simone White, Local Natives) for their self-titled debut EP. Their first single “Won’t See Me” was turned into a music video by directors CW & Kube which follows May in random desolate Downtown L.A. locations (artist lofts, railroad tracks, viaducts, and a skating rink). It superbly taps into the vein of the song: wandering late at night with alcohol, cigarettes, and junk food as your only companions, too bored to go home just yet, but too scared not to… - Free Bike Valet

"Ears Wide Open: Dark Furs"

The vocals of Suzanne May cover a lot of topography on Dark Furs’ self-titled EP — the higher elevations reached by some of the 4AD singers we used to love, the deeper places of conflicted emotions and insistent longing. In concert with the the understated guitar work of Chad Phillipps (and now the drumming of Garrett Henritz), the U.K.-born May gives the band’s indie-pop an arty (and production-gimmick-free) sensibility that’s more sophisticated reverie than Day-Glo dreams. “Dark Furs” came out on Christmas and may have been buried temporarily in our discarded holiday wrapping paper, but over five songs it proves a gift that keeps on giving.

"All alone with the Dark Furs"

Dark Furs operates in the tangled briers of indie pop. It’s moody, but elegantly arranged, bolstered by the wall of sound approach while still moving along the plot. It’s in the vein of recent pop acts that could be considered dream/mood pop, but what does any of that really mean? You could say “See Siouxise Sioux” and we could talk all night about that comparison. Most important to note is that Dark Furs are in possession of an unstoppable force named Suzanne May.
As the voice of Dark Furs, May is a chemical reaction of vocals bonding with the arrangements by Chad Philipps and the drum work by Nathan Meek; consecutively May is frail and solid, ethereal while also calling forth her husky commands. On the Dark Fur’s track Hearts (Fuck You, Goodbye), May pivots from playful, frail vocals to gruff sounding consonants that drop low on the register. Think of a pirouette transitioning into a tackle.
She sings:
I’d like to know that you’re somewhere in pain on the floor/ You ain’t that beautiful/ Want you to ache when you wake/ Is she better than me? That is no, that is no, that is no.”
Dark Furs are doleful, but celebratory, owing to new wave’s crest that pulled back just before reality came crashing into the party. (Because everyone knows that when the party is most full of life someone is going to want to play the piano and start a sing-along).
There is an extrinsic beauty in the bustle of a new city, a crowded room and Dark Furs reminds us that we can never truly appreciate isolation until we’re surrounded by buildings filled with people. - The Eastside LA

Bio

Dark Furs is a female-fronted independent rock band. Founded in East Los Angeles, a chance connection in 2011 between UK-raised vocalist Suzanne May and LA native Chad Philipps sparked an immediate songwriting partnership. They mix intricate melody lines and commanding vocals with dark and dreamy instrumentals to create their own brand of "Mood Rock." In 2013, the duo headed into the studio to record their self-titled EP with producer Dan Long (Henry Clay People, Local Natives) which BuzzBands.LA described as "a sophisticated reverie" and landed them on multiple Bands to Watch lists. They then completed the recording of their follow-up EP "En L'air" at Jim Henson Studios with producer Nico Essig, released Spring of 2014. Dark Furs is ready to kick off 2015 with their new single "Hearts", music videos, and an international tour.
