"Dark Pony"

Something of a teenage rock star with his former band Mango Jam in the 1990s and part of Jonny Lang’s band in the ’00s, Jon Herchert makes no secret where he has been since then on “Suburban Serenade, Vol. 1,” his first album under the alias Dark Pony. The moniker comes from his dad’s helicopter unit in the Vietnam War, and the songs come from his own unit in the western ’burbs, where he serves alongside a wife, kids, dog, etc. There’s even a song here called “Dog.” Hardly as saccharine as it sounds, the album is charmingly whimsical and musically resplendent, with ample traces of Wilco, George Harrison, Elvis Costello and other cool rock ’n’ roll dads. His backers includes local stalwarts such as Jim Anton and Joe Savage. - Star Tribune

Bio

Jon Herchert is about to release his first full length CD - marking a giant stage in the career of the Minneapolis based guitarist, singer/songwriter and producer.

Jon was 12 when he picked up his first guitar. Four years later he formed Mango Jam, along with singer songwriter/bassist, Jason Bush, which became one of the midwest's most popular Jam bands releasing 4 CDs and touring relentlessly around the country after debuting in 90 in Minneapolis

As Mango was winding down, Jon began to create and write his own songs and an interest in recording began to emerge. His good friend, John Fields stepped in to help produce the first tracks but rather than launch a solo project, Jon opted to launch a family instead. He wed his high school sweetie and two beautiful boys soon followed. The Herchert family hunkered down in the burbs and Jon built a studio nearby.

For the last 13 years, Jon has been with the non-profit, Youth Frontiers, performing music and facilitating daylong retreats that challenge the way young people treat one another. While his own music was simmering on the back burner, Jon began producing projects in his suburban studio including recordings for Target and Parents Magazine and for local artists Tim Mahoney, Divorcee, Terramara and Eich5 (Ike). Jon also found time to do some gigs with various artists like Keri Noble, Ashleigh Still, Jeff Arundel, Alicia Wiley, and the annual Tribute to the Last Waltz.

In 2007, Grammy Award-winning artist Jonny Lang offered Jon guitar/vocals duties for his Turnaround tour. Jon replaced Reeve Carney (Spiderman, the Musical) and toured with Lang until the summer of 2008. Performing with Lang reignited in Jon the powerful desire to create and perform his own music.

Jon embarked on his own turnaround. Returning home to the burbs , he set out to create a one-of-a-kind sound - soulful, authentic & infectious - a modern day take on classic roots rock. Inspired by his father, a helicopter pilot who flew in Vietnam with the unit Dark Horse, Jons, Dark Pony debuted at 318 in Excelsior MN in 2009 with BFF, Matt Novachis on drums, Joe Savage on steel and Jim Anton on bass.

The release of Jons first full length solo CD Dark Pony Suburban Serenade Vol.1 is scheduled for August 26th. Hes back at the Cedar this time with a potent bomb of earnest songs that pay tribute to hope, fear and love for life. Yes, life is good for this modern day suburban rock star.
