"Darren Locke at The Annex, 1/16/07"

My friend Darren's a pretty accomplished acoustic singer/songwriter from Detroit. I got a chance to see him live yesterday at the Annex in the Lower East Side and sometimes you forget that your friends can have amazing voices. Very plaintive and pure and airy, and he has this extended tremolo in his phrasing that makes your heart break. If you cross Thom Yorke with Tom Petty and throw in a bit of Win Butler from Arcade Fire, you'd get Darren.
His songs are simultaneously uplifting and lyrically beautiful. Some slow paced and some rambling but all very powerful. He played some songs solo and had an awesome accordionist play with him for the last 3-4 songs, which really complemented his guitar in really interesting ways. I am not giving this review any justice so go now and download one of my favorite songs from Darren: "Carolina." - stereoscope.fm
