For Darryl Ellyson, this will mark his first appearance at ChesterFest. He couldn’t be more excited.

“I’m excited to play. I’ve always wanted to participate in ChesterFest, but this is the first time I’ve been able to. I try to stay involved with the Chester area as much as possible,” says Ellyson.

Though this will be his first appearance, Ellyson is well-versed in the music scene.

Coming from a family of musicians – his grandfather played in the Harmonicats, his father played on “The Old Dominion Barn Dance,” and both grandmothers played piano for silent movies – Ellyson began his professional music career over 20 years ago. Growing up listening to the sounds of Motown, some of his earliest memories revolve around music.

“When I was four or five, I remember listening to my dad playing the harmonica. It’s one of those memories that just stuck with me,” says Ellyson.

Since then, Ellyson has played numerous clubs and concert halls, from Virginia to Hawaii, including opening for Matt “Guitar” Murphy, Delbert McClinton, and Hank Williams’ “Bama Band.” A self-described “singer and guitar strummer,” Ellyson plays a large selection of covers ranging from Jimmy Buffet to Elvis to the Doors to the Beatles, as well as about 40 of his own original songs. Now, after a hiatus from his music, Ellyson is back on the scene, regularly playing at Chester United Methodist Church.

“ I took a break from my music for a while,” says Ellyson. “Starting back up about a year ago, I love being on stage and having people sing and dance to my songs.”

Ellyson will be taking the East stage at ChesterFest at 12:00 p.m ChesterFest will take place on September 8 on the Village Green.

"Songwriter's Showcase"

Songwriters Showcase November 2007
November 19, 2007’s Showcase turned the Showcase counter over to #196 – 4 more Showcases and we’ll hit #200!! And what better way to continue this historic countdown than by adding a new face to the VOCAL line-up and bringing some top notch pickers and singers to the stage. Darryl Ellyson gave his VOCAL debut performance. The TapHouse was filled to capacity and a wonderful evening of musicianship and creative songwriting was had by all.
We have a great home for the Showcase at Richbrau’s Taphouse Grill www.richbrau.com where we have been located for over two years now. Be sure to join us every 3rd Monday of the month at 1214 East Cary Street for fine food and home brewed beverages!

Darryl Ellyson was welcomed to the stage by a big VOCAL round of applause. Darryl is a long time performer who has done a lot of solo songwriting and performing recently. His voice is powerful and pleasing to the ear. Most of his songs deal with that topic we can never get too far away from – love and heartache. His song list included ‘When I Get Home’, ‘What’s Gone Wrong’ and ‘I'm So Worried’. The song ‘That's The Way Love Goes’ was described as a ‘cry in your beer song’ and at least one song ‘You Won’t Be Cheatin On Me’ was a lively, more light hearted tune. Everything else fell within this emotional range. Thanks to Darryl for a great debut.

Bio

2009 “Songwriter of the Year” Darryl Ellyson is bringing his sweet baritone back to the Virginia area. The Chesterfield native is known and loved for his rich voice, exceptional songwriting abilities, and the bluesy soul that permeates his sound. Darryl was given the New Horizons award for “Best New Artist” by the Virginia Organization of Lyricists and Composers, and his song "Raindrops Falling Down" won an Honorable mention in the 2010 Mid-Atlantic Songwriting Contest, the Jazz/Blues Category. His song writing focuses on the revelations of life, from the vulnerabilities and pain of love and loss, to the happiness and joys of life in simply living it. “Soulful contemporary Blues” is how Darryl describes his sound, and it proves an apt description when you hear him play. His style entails everything from the old Delta Blues sound to more contemporary rock and country styles, all incorporated in a song. Darryl does it all and he does it well, and the Richmond music scene is a better place with him in it.
