"Cultural and innovative: Daulute’s first steps into Cretan music"

Daulute is a new Cretan trio delving into a musical tradition of inexhaustible richness. Apart from skillful musicians, they seem to have studied well the musical path they want to follow. As they claim, they want to accomplish a personal interpretation of traditional Cretan music, by integrating Western wind instruments like whistles and flutes. They want to cover traditional Greek things in their own experimental interpretation. - http://freegankolektiva.wordpress.com

Bio

Formed in 2010 by three musicians from the island of Crete, Daulute brings a unique and dynamic sound to the interpretation of Greek traditional music. It presents an extensive Cretan repertoire as a basis, while it also explores other Greek music idioms and improvisations.

Motivated by their common love and respect for Greek music, the musicians endeavour to develop an alternative world music sound. George Zacharioudakis revives the almost extinct Cretan flutes (pipes and whistles) and adapts cane and metal flutes from other traditions (Western flute, Indian bansuri, Celtic whistles) in the body of Greek music. Dimitris Sideris focuses on the Cretan lute and expands its technique by adapting elements from related string instruments. John Papatzanis extends the technical capabilities of the toumpi (Cretan drum) and incorporates other traditional percussions (Persian tombak, African udu, Middle Eastern frame drums).

Individually and as a group they have been performing for many years in various contexts ranging from traditional local festivities to concert halls, in Greece and abroad.
