"Comedian Dava Krause Is A Child Of The 80s"

Dava Krause is an on the rise comedian. We've listened to some of her standup and lyrical comedy and were pleasantly surprised that it didn’t feel like preparation at all. It's like listening to that friend, coworker or crazy relative who always makes you laugh while they rant about their lives.

Dava’s comedic style manages to be fresh, yet familiar. It is obvious that her childhood and family play a big role in her material, so we were eager to talk with her about both and to learn how she got into the business of being funny.

Dava told us that she started developing her approach to humor in childhood. "I watched a lot of sitcoms and thought shows like Cheers taught me a lot about comedic timing," said Dava.

She was also a loyal fan of 80’s comedian legend, Andrew Dice Clay. We think we see some of Dice’s influence in one of our favorite Dava bits, "Inappropriate Fairy Tales". The set provokes an “I can’t believe she just said that!” type of laughter that reminds us of listening to Dice’s version of classic nursery rhymes that are, well, inappropriate.

When did Dava first realize that she was funny? She thought for a moment, “I can’t pinpoint a specific moment. I just remember that my friends would always beg me to tell them stories. My best friend, who is still my best friend today, would even record me telling stories on cassettes for her family to listen to on road trips.” It’s not all that different from today except now you don’t have to be Dava’s friend to be able to listen to her stories on road trips; you can just download them from iTunes.

Dava seems like such a natural one-woman show to us, so it is hard to imagine that she ever considered any other career path, but growing up she always thought she would end up being a musical theatre actress. She performed in musical theatre in high school and even majored in it at North Western University.

Looking back she realizes that serious theatre was not quite the right fit for her. “I was just not very whimsical, ya know?” she reflects. The whole longing love interest of the male lead thing just isn’t really her forte. She was always cast in the more quirky, character acting roles. Dava has what Hugh Laurie would later call “a comedic face” during her recurring stint as the wacky barista on House M.D.
When Dava first gave stand up a try she had (we are not trying to be total Oprah Kool-Aid drinking followers, but…) an “A-ha moment”. She figures she probably bombed the second or third time she got on stage, but that first time she nailed it. She has focused on stand-up and comedic acting ever since. Dava has even found a way to incorporate her love and talent for music as well by putting some of her act to music. Dava is really running with the whole comedy thing and if you keep an eye out, you will see her everywhere.

Dava’s first comedy album, Child of the 80’s launches this week, April 1 on iTunes. She is currently focusing on stand-up and promoting her album. We are definitely planning to go see Dava live and so should you. You can find out when and where she will be performing by checking her calendar at www.davakrause.com. - Starpulse.com
