"The Good Parts"

"It's hard to believe that anything brilliant could come out of California's Central Valley besides George Lucas. But look what's happened: Fiver, Grandaddy, and now Dave Hanley are all thriving and succeeding. Hanley's sound is laid back, Southern, and the "good" parts of the Central Valley all at once. You'd even expect him to be playing a few clubs in Austin on a regular basis, the Live Music Capitol of the World. His music is loved and appreciated like a rare , cheap Italian wine. So savor this while you can and store it in a cool dry place."

"Off the Air presents"

These guys get their bluegrass on. Banjos gettin' plucked the way it ought get done. Close your eyes and picture yourself driving down a country road in an old Chevy pick-up with your dog in the back, his head around the side of the cab, with his face in the wind as the radio blares.

Dave Hanley
A native to the California Central Valley, grew up with the sweet smell of chocolate billowing from the Hershey factory at the edge of town and a railroad that cut the town in half when it passed through at a snail's pace. Dave’s guitar picking, lyrics and harmonies grab live audiences with his own Bluegrass Americana style, making them wander through a countryside that is sometimes unforgiving and lonely; sometimes telling tales tongue in cheek while exploring life in a small town.

Dave Hanley became emancipated at the age of 16. Leaving his family in Vancouver, WA, Dave returned to California where he landed a job as a park employee in Wawona, Yosemite Nat'l Park. There he met the legendary Frank Solivan (California Bluegrass Assn. Ambassador), known for his fast flat-picking rhythmic banjo style, melody and tempo. To this day is Frank is his mentor. Over time Dave found his own voice, rhythm and technique, and his own way to tell a story.

In 1994 Dave Hanley joined the Sons of Levi. Their debut album, Enter In, was recorded with Jonny Colla (Huey Lewis & The News) at his APT.2 recording studio in Novato CA. Pre-production was handled by Brad Gillis (Night Ranger). “Seeing all of the gold and platinum albums all of the walls was truly inspiring. Chris Hayes even popped his head in once or twice.”

In 2000, the Puffin Billies were formed, a band Dave Hanley co-founded. The band quickly formed a large fan base, “At one point there were people driving 200 miles to see us play, people would follow us over to San Francisco and fill the club we were playing that night, the experience was really humbling.”

The Puffin Billies released their self-titled LP in 2002, to which Dave contributed two original tracks; “Bandalino” and “Perfect Day”. “Perfect Day” was one of the most played tracks on college radio in the Central Valley (KDVS, KCSS, KUOP, KEJC). In 2002 The Billies received a Modesto Area Music Award in the Bluegrass/Americana category, receiving praise from print and radio all over the Central Valley. Dave Hanley played guitar and sang vocals with the Puffin Billies for four years opening for Canned Heat (Barton Enterprises, inc.) Built Like Alaska (Future Farmer) and Grandaddy (Virgin V2).

Midway through 2004 Dave embarked on an ambitious solo endeavor. Gifthorse, released in September 2005, is quickly becoming a favorite amongst Indie, Bluegrass and Americana folks.
