BandRock

A gifted songwriter.... gritty, full of honesty and attitude. Both optimistic and reflective, his lyrical playfulness and unique voice are combined with solid rhythms and melodies that sit in the basement of each tune.

Biography

Dave Marsh’s debut solo recording, The True Love Rules, is a gritty, indie release full of honesty and attitude. The fact that Dave is a drummer at heart is evident in the solid rhythms that sit in the basement of each tune. His lyrics reflect timeless themes like true love, growing up and getting older, and facing difficult life questions, all while maintaining a wry and distinctive sense of humour. Combine the rhythm and language with Marsh’s strong sense of melody and you have a great record in your hands.

Dave’s experience with writing and performing spans over twenty years and half a dozen genres. His musical career has taken him across Canada, the US, throughout Europe and as far afield as Australia. He is a founding member of the Joel Plaskett Emergency, with whom he continues to record and perform, and he has married this enduring musical connection with his solo work by inviting Plaskett to co-produce his first solo recording.

The True Love Rules was written and recorded throughout 2007 in Halifax, Dartmouth and Sydney, Australia. Long time collaborators and friends contributed to several of the tracks with guest appearances led by Plaskett, The SuperFriendz, original Emergency bassist Tim Brennan, Cool Blue Halo’s Paul Boudreau, and Peter Elkas.

A Nova Scotia rock record that rolls like a modern classic, “The True Love Rules” rings bells like David Bowie, The La’s, Guided By Voices, The Stooges, The Four Tops and Willie Nelson. From the discordant nostalgia of “Backstreets Thread” to the tuneful and mature confidence of “I’ll Let Them Know You Were Here”, Dave’s songs are ferociously honest no matter what musical vein he’s mining. Both optimistic and reflective, his lyrical playfulness and unique voice are what make this record special in today’s overly polished musical climate.

Backstreets Thread

Written By: Dave Marsh

looking for a band somewhere downtown to play
warming up with cider at the grafton st. café
29 steps to a whole ‘nother world
jamie’s driving me and clive see nobodies heroes
just another reason to get the fuck outta high school

looking for a job somewhere downtown to work
got to leave home get away from the jerk
dana’s making change 5 quarters from a buck
we learned quicksilver was not about the luck
on my way to sea cadets get the call from clarky

chorus
we’ll find our way back streets there someday
we’ll find a thread that leads us the other way
you’ll find me hanging on a backstreets thread all night

look at ted and jed at barrington and salter
standing on the corner like some rock of gibralter
you can’t beat dave lord at asteroids deluxe
but you got to make sure you don’t drop your nunchucks
don’t be no faker in front of susan baker

chorus
terry arsenault ooh yeah
marcus jones ooh yeah
backstreets thread
backstreets thread all night

The Way We Live Today

Written By: Dave Marsh

Is there anyone to blame
For the way we live today
Is this the best that we can do
Feels like living in zoo
The way we live today
Everybody is the same
And the bitching every night
Instead of love we’d rather fight
All the people all over the world
Got to decide for themselves

The way we live today
That’s the way we live today

Is this the dream we had in school
I never thought that we were cruel
First we lied then we stole
Then someone murdered rock and roll
All the boys and girls in the world
Got to decide for themselves

The way we live today
The way we lived today

True Love Rules

Written By: Dave Marsh

I reckon I can hang with the best of them
but I can’t hang it up like the rest of them
and puttin’ on airs and taking off buttons
don’t get me nowhere’s don’t get me no nothings
I must admit it

true love rules
All the other fools can do what they choose I know
true love rules
is never lies it never dies

i learned early to diversify my business
kept my fingers in a couple of pies
you keep on dragging me downtown
every time I wanna go to bed
it’s going through my head

true love rules
all the other fools can do what they choose I know that
true love rules
it never lies it never dies

all the birdies in the pine trees say
only a fool would throw it all away
the four tops and the temptations
have been warning me for years singing

true love rules , true love rules

you keep on dragging me downtown
every time I wanna go to bed
it’s going through my head that

true love rules
all the other dudes can do what they choose I know
true love rules
it’s no surprise I’ve come to realize
true love rules

you keep on dragging me downtown

The Smoke Easy

Written By: Dave Marsh

you’ve got me thinking ‘bout you
goddamned if I know what to do
i’m having one I got to have two
and that’s got me thinking ‘bout you

my hearts aching like a kick in the guts
i’m all squirrelly and it’s driving me nuts
it’s such a drag when you’re rolling the butts
king size and your silk navy cuts

we follow paul inside the bar
after hours and after last call
the smoke easy is the safest of bets
less to remember more to mcgetts

c’mon c’mon get into your ride
take it outside and keep rolling on
c’mon c’mon get into your ride
take it outside and keep rolling on
rolling on rolling on

Picking Up The Pieces

Written By: Dave Marsh

putting names to the faces in the dark quiet places
where the secrets that eat me turn me on and break the dawn
the last day of the party when hardcore turns heartache
and the creatures i live with turn me out they scream and shout
and the stars don’t look the same I’m not looking for nobody to blame

chorus
if you ever refuse me there’ll be no refuge to soothe me
there won’t be love there won’t be pain
won’t be anything ever the same
won’t be picking up pieces with hope to renew
won’t be love won’t be you

putting names to the face in the dark quiet places
and my faithless decisions see me fall from the wall

chorus

Nav Com Tav

Written By: Dave Marsh

we swing and sway with the chateau gay
we swing and roll with the shore patrol
make last call at the carpenters hall

fo2 ic fes

aim for the right if you want to swing
aim for the left where the jailbird sings
look for the fear in the red of their eyes
drink up your rum and your twice the size

Move You Around

Written By: Dave Marsh

little girl I wanna move you around
ooh ooh standing alone
baby girl wanna move you up and down
ooh ooh standing alone
don’t want to come between love and marriage
ooh ooh standing alone
little girl just wanna rock the carriage
ooh ooh standing alone

waterfront movies in the fog for free
carve our initials in an old oak tree
my name is john and yours is jane
forget about the past and remember love’s in vain

baby girl wanna move you around
little girl wanna move you up and down
baby pictures in an old brown wallet
a stack of letters in a hallway closet

i’ll climb the candy mountain for you
i’ll sink in the deepest ocean blue
ooh ooh standing alone

Most People Believe

Written By: Dave Marsh

most people believe
that they possess
all the time in the world
leave off today
what they can delay
that floats like a kiss from your lips away

keep me in your heart whenever we’re apart
smile remember me with a nice cup of tea

the thunder in summer crackles and sizzles
the drizzle bathes the city in steam

keep us in your heart whenever we’re apart
smile remember me with a nice cup of tea
and one for the boys lying overseas

I’ll Let Them Know You Were Here

Written By: Dave Marsh

here deep in the stillness
in the days after the illness
morning sunshine appears
i’ll let them know you were here

picture this love and be sure
of you and me in the future
faithfully year after year
i’ll let then know you were here

memories for me are like the bitter sweet traces
of laughter and tears down the cheek of young familiar faces

if your feeling uncertain just before they draw the curtain
give them a reason to cheer and let them know you were here

pain in my heart like frost in the winter
you love and watch over me dear remove it like a splinter

picture this love and be sure
of you and me in the future
faithfully year after year
i’ll let them know you were here

I Know Nothing Anymore

Written By: Dave Marsh

You count to three behind the oak tree
I’ll run and hide down by the riverside

I know nothing anymore
I’m outta touch now
A cold wind shut my door
I know nothing about nothing it seems
mistakes I made
were elementary
but even I recall
the writing left on the wall

you count to three behind the oak tree
I’ll run and hide
down by the riverside

I know nothing when it is my turn
I know ashes of the books they used to burn
And I know little of the stars in the sky
oblivious to the years passing by
but even I recall
the writing left on the wall

you’ll search far and wide for a long time
when the winter comes you’ll have to go inside
write by candlelight

I know nothing anymore
I’m outta touch now
A cold wind shut my door
But even I can see
An opportunity

You count to three behind the oak tree
I’ll run and hide down by the riverside

Like a newborn’s first sunset I regret
It hasn’t sunk in yet
