After toiling for years in San Francisco quirk-rock bands Budderball and The Beanweevils, Newman's solo debut "Downer" has him shrugging off the scratchy coat of band collaboration to find his artistic voice and instrumental skills fully hatched. Although the songs' subjects are often riddled with with self-doubt, Dave is no shoe gazer: his orchestral guitar style fills the arrangements and backs his engaging vocal delivery.
Newman's influences are as scattered as could possibly be. Louden Wainright III, Merl Travis, Rush, Tom Lehrer, Magritte, Planet of the Apes, Underdog.
