"Throwing a "Sexy Party" at Hum Brews"

Throwing a "sexy party" at Hum Brews - Show Preview by Helen Wilson

This Saturday, November 19 the DAVE STEIN BAND will perform at Humboldt Brews, and listeners will have the opportunity to experience some unique music. The band plays what Dave Stein, guitar/vocals/songwriting, calls "groove rock funk" and says that it is a "sort of derivative of the Grateful Dead". This band, however, always tries to keep their music upbeat often creates what the band describes as a "sexy party". "It's the mood that we create", stated Stein, "It's sensual."

Stein believes that his band's success comes from "the synergy between the members," and says that they "become a single unit". He also describes their remarkable ability to crate, and play, songs that they've never played before. He said that the audience is often not aware that they're hearing "original music being written on the fly," however, he believes that everyone present can tell that something is going on. "that's what really excites me," he stated. He admires band members for having the nerve to "come up with stuff" in front of a live audience. this isn't a rare occurrence either, as it happens an average of once a night.

Stein describes the other band members, as well as himself, as being "veterans of music scenes." All of them have done extensive touring and have learned a lot from their experiences. They make their homes in Santa Cruz and San Francisco counties, and according to Stein, "It makes it easier to get around." He describes the spread out locations as "stomping grounds." "It gives us a wider perspective", he states.

The DAVE STEIN BUBHUB is currently working on a new CD that is scheduled to be out sometime in January. According to Stein, the album, which hasn't yet been titled will have the "funky sound reflective of a live show". Stein attributes a lot of the successful music to the natural setting where it developed. He describes himself as a "serious nature lover" and believes that his surroundings are "inspiring". In a given night, this award-winning band will play about ten percent covers. A lot of these come form Grateful Dead music. However, according to Stein, they like to "inject a little caffeine into it", and keep the music lively. Check them out on Saturday, Nov. 19 at Humboldt Brews at 9:30PM. The cost is $5. - Arcata Eye, Arcata, CA

"Artist:Dave Stein Album:Tomorrow Still Has Me"

Dave Stein is a singer/songwriter/bandleader originally from Philadelphia, now based in Santa Cruz, California, who has been recording and performing his exceptional music since 1979. Tomorrow Still Has Me is his latest CD and it deserves to be heard by anyone who loves classic-sounding rock and roll.

Dave seems to favor old-school rock arrangements for his emotional and lyrically thoughtful musings. For example, both the percolating opening track, "Are You My Woman", and "Why?" remind me of late 70's/early 80's Santana, while "Ride With Him" is a canny fusion of 70's throwback Dave Matthews and Santana. Then there's "Dear Mother's nods to early 70's Traffic...well, you get the idea.

Dave also has a way with a ballad, and "Sorry To Be Sorry" and "Will Time Bring Us Together" are two very superior examples of good balladry: sensitive words supported, not overwhelmed, by sympathetic musical backing, all topped off with Dave's evocative singing.

Dave Stein has been in the business for a long time and it shows in the fine craftsmanship of his recordings and his ability to sell a song with sincerity.
