NOTTINGHAM to NEW YORK

Einstein disguised as Robin Hood with
his memories in a trunk *
- Bob Dylan

I was born in Nottingham, England. But, despite being the home of that famous outlaw, Robin Hood, I never felt I belonged there.

It did hold one fascination for me though it was the birthplace and early home of D.H.Lawrence (1885-1930). From wanting to escape my physical surroundings it was an easy leap to his writings his longing to escape the emotional and physical (in a different sense) limitations of his time. So there I was, reading Women In Love at probably too young an age to be healthy.
But it was the first step in a journey that would not make sense for many years. Wound up with escape, with writing and, eventually, with music.

The second time I encountered D.H.Lawrence he had slung a guitar around his neck and changed his name to Bob Dylan. When, long after he first helped set my mind alight, he sang "And the all-night girls they whisper of escapades out on the D train"* I was hooked. And I didnt even know what the D train was. In 1988 I finally made it to New York, traveling on that same train and seeking out the all-night girls. I even found a few. But that's all behind me now, having recently traded New York for the stark beauty of New Mexico. Everything that came in between? I guess you'll have to listen to the songs. If it's anywhere at all, it's in those verses I have been scribbling down ever since I traded Robin Hood for D.H.Lawrence (or was it Einstein disguised as.
