London born, now New York based, David Ellis intrigues and captivates with his debut single “Tallulah”. Not tagged with a genre, the song instead carries the highly specific and indicative tag “when love is caving in”. The chorus of this brooding ambient love song – “doesn’t mean much to say that I still love you / when there is an eager mind thinking the same thing” – reveals it is one to a love foregone. This swirling mixture of nostalgia, jealousy, and disappointment unfurls itself upon a remarkable sonic landscape, marked by the flickering presence of ethereal strings. Hopefully there will be more tracks swiftly added to his SoundCloud to follow up on this impressive debut! - Wild Honey Pie
London by NYC’s David Ellis debuts the video for, “When Love Is Caving In”, the a-side from his upcoming single, b/w “Tallulah”. Available now from Axis Mundi Records, Ellis brings songs of experience, romantic poet songs, and fables that reckon life and love to happenstances experiences that occasionally catch us all off guard during these colder, and more closed off times.
“When Love Is Caving In” arrives with coffee house visuals, where David and a dear friend enjoy caffeinated beverages, whilst conversing over literature, and acoustic guitar strumming sessions. The repeated chorus line of, “if you don’t know by now, I’ll show you some how,” is portrayed through special intimate moment scenes, seen in a cafe, that migrate outside to a nearby by park, where the hopeful, shimmering strings take flight like the twitterpated butterflies that you feel in your stomach when a new romance begins. “When Love Is Caving In” reminds us all in song, and video to embrace the moments of new beginnings, and to accept the uncertainty of what someone neat, new, and nice might bring into your world. - IMPOSE MAGAZINE
Now residing in New York, London native David Ellis was inspired by stories of ancient English folklore to write songs that tackle love and spirituality.
His sound is similarly polysemic, both tragic and bright at the same time.
The video for his single “Tallulah” feels like a waking dream, a moment disoriented by snowfall. Ambient harp is scattered over the track, lifting the heartbreaking quality of Ellis’s soft, folk vocals. Holding together the track is an honest and melodically catchy hook: “It doesn’t mean much to say that I still love you / when there’s an eager mind thinking the same thing.” - Culture Collide Magazine
Londoner David Ellis‘ sweet-tempered, melodic single, ‘When Love Is Caving In‘ ripples with bucolic relatability. This kind of earnest indie pop could just as easily taken form during the 80’s in commonwealth countries, and would have perhaps resonated most strikingly with New Zealand’s Dunedin Sound Scene, which was born in an isolated town with Celtic roots.
Ellis’ self-proclaimed fondness for ancient English folklore and spirituality don’t clash mystical horns with the cozy down-home romance featuring on this track, which in the very best sense almost feels like it belongs on flexidisk in the hands of a Glaswegian school-radio station DJ some thirty years ago. With his nonchalant drumming, stripped-down baselines and barely-there guitar jangle, Ellis regales us with what might once have been affectionately termed as college music, but has today become a quietly acclaimed and refreshing genre in the indie canon. - Gold Flake Paint

David Ellis rose from the decaying dreams of London's spleen. Led by the mythical stories of ancient English folklore, he sought clarity within humanity's malspirited culture. Ellis challenges the prevailing perspective towards the complexities of love and spirituality. Dressed in ambient melodies, Ellis's words are tailored to mirror the honesty that hides in all of life's conflicts and bides wholly in the sphere of romance.
After playing frequent shows in New York City and a stint at SXSW festival in Texas, 2015 came to a climactic end when David Ellis Group was invited to Headline Webster Hall as part of the Quarterly Arts Soirée featuring a collective of the years best talent In the East Village.
