"Rootstime review "The Sapphire Sun""

David Allen Hammond
Sapphire Sun
David Allen Hammond is a singer-songwriter and multi-
instrumentalist who was born in the desert near New
River, Arizona and subsequently moved to Texas, where he
worked closely with local artists. During the last twenty
years, Jimmie Dale Gilmore to date been the most inten-
sive partner, but also Butch Hancock, Kevin Welch, Joe Ely
and Jimmie LaFave could count on his support.
“The Sapphire Sun," a record which he completed in his
new residence, New York City, was inspired by a poem
"Dear Sapphire Sun" by Jeanie Putnam, a poet who also contributes harmony vocals on
this record .
Hammond brings a mix of earlier songs with acoustic rock songs in Americana style. He
tells from his own life experiences in clever lyrics he has transposed. The songs are all
original compositions except " Junk, " a song from still unknown singer- songwriter
Tom Proutt .
Other great tracks from "The Sapphire Sun " are the murder ballad "Pegleg John," coun-
try tune "Faster Than The Sun," bluesrockers "Legal-Safe-Free" and " Foolish Heart, "
"Lady Blues," guitar song "Viper 's Tooth," the acoustic " Time Out Of Memory " and
folk rockers "The Poseidon Adventure " and "Oracle Of The Winter's Dream " which be-
gins this album .
The fact that Hammond plays almost all the instruments on this track itself deserves
special mention. Additionally, Andy Spall plays drums and percussion, David Webb
plays Hammond organ, Mark Dudrow plays cello and Justin Dean plays violin. Whether
we will have to wait another decade for the next album from this artist is not clear, but
we certainly hope it is not his last.

"The Sapphire Sun"

David Allen Hammond is a singer- songwriter and multi - instrumentalist who was born in the desert near New River , Arizona and subsequently moved to Texas , where he worked closely with local artists . During the last twenty years Of this, Jimmie Dale Gilmore to date been the most intensive partner, but also Butch Hancock , Kevin Welch , Joe Ely and Jimmie LaFave could count on his support .

In 2002 he released his first album on the market under the title " Life Lines" with five songs he had written . Along with Jimmie Dale Gilmore It took until 2013 before a successor for that debut could be delivered by the release of the CD "The Sapphire Sun " , a record which he completed in his new residence, New York City , which was inspired by a poem " Dear Sapphire Sun " Jeanie Putnam , a poet who by the way also contributes harmony vocals on this record .

On this album David Allen Hammond brings a mix of earlier songs with acoustic rock songs in Americana style. Lyrically he tells from his own life experiences in clever lyrics he has transposed. Poetically The songs are all original compositions on a number after " Junk " , a song of us still unknown singer- songwriter Tom Proutt .

Other great tracks from "The Sapphire Sun " are with the same Tom Proutt composed murder ballad " Pegleg John " country tune "Faster Than The Sun " , Bluesrockers "Legal -Safe -Free " and " Foolish Heart " , " Lady Blues " , guitar song " Viper 's Tooth " , the acoustic " Time Out Of Memory " and folk rockers " the Poseidon Adventure " and " Oracle Of The Winter's Dream " which begins this album .

The fact that David almost all the instruments on this track itself has responded , Allen Hammond deserves special mention . Additionally took Andy Spall extra drums and percussion , David Webb played Hammond organ , Mark Dudrow played cello and violin Justin Dean . Or we will have to wait for the next album of this artist decade now again is not clear, but it certainly does not have to last. For us so long

"David Allen Hammond - Lifelines"

For several days running this CD spins in my CD player, because by finishing some quick successive interviews came a temporary file in CD writing discussions. So David Allen's voice keep me company for a while during the typing of those interviews. However, it will be difficult for me to make a new disc from the fast-growing pile place to discuss blues CDs and singer-songwriter releases. Because this is clearly a growth plate, the more you hear them, the more David Allen Hammond's songs do their work and possess you. David was born with as background the desolate desert landscape of Arizona, but lived for a time, since 1979 to be exact, in Austin, the city of music. He also wrote songs for Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Kevin Welch and Fred Coller, before he moved to New Mexico, where he built his own studio, the Spiderman studios in Westlake, which was also recorded this CD. And work he has, if you belong to the artists he has now played: Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely, Butch Hancock, Kimmie Rhodes, Kelly Willis, Sara Hickman, Tish Hinojosa, Nancy Griffith, Rosie Flores, Ray Campi, David Halley and recently Rebel Red.
Rebel Red is a New York, singer-songwriter and recently David lives in Manhattan and is therefore frequently her guitarist. A restless soul as you rightly so. His songs are all wonderful stories, David is a storyteller, or rather a painter with words, this CD as a canvas used for a landscape of songs that are as spacious and open sound like the desert landscape of his native region. The strong opener "Icarus and Santa Elena" is immediately hit, a song that grabs you with a wonderful "hook" and a nice relaxed rhythm His songs are true gems full of variety, alt. country and Americana tales about love, loss, despair and hope, sadness and joy, brought to a perfectly balanced way, with very neat recordings that are satisfying to the ear. This include Glenn Takashi Kawamoto, are excellent bassist, and drummer Rafael Gayol are responsible, plus a whole slew of guest musicians. Songs like "Almost Every Night" and "Do not Be A Stranger" are numbers that can readily take in between the work of that other friends place Texan singer songwriters that were mentioned above. David's name may not resonate, but he deserves better. This ten-track piece contains few lesser moments. All this work is not so recent, (From 2002, David made ??a few years now for his sick mother), we hope that soon a successor for the "Lifelines". We are already waiting anxiously!

Bio

For more than twenty years, David Allen Hammond has been writing and performing his songs in venues from coast to coast; honing his vision of the spiritual underpinnings of the human experience.

From the windswept deserts of the Southwest to the snow-covered fields of the high mountain valleys or the steel and concrete canyons of New York City, David's songs ride the thin edge of experience where the senses apprehend but the the soul understands.

"It is such a pleasure to hear this recording which demonstrates David Hammond's
immense musical range and powerful songwriting"
Jimmie Dale Gilmore

Born in New River, Arizona, the desert was David's first home and the austere beauty of the landscape is apparent in his songs. After several years studying Jazz, English, Anthropology and Philosophy at Arizona State University, David moved to Texas where he spent the next 20-some years playing and writing with a variety of musicians, singers and songwriters. In 2002, after the release of 'Lifelines' an opportunity arose to move to the high country of New Mexico and Spyderman Studios was born. The studio, in the basement of KZRM radio became a comfortable place for singers and songwriters to capture their songs and avail themselves of David's skill as producer and instrumentalist.

After a serendipitous meeting with a beautiful classical pianist from New York City, David relocated to the East coast where he continues to perform and create.

David's new CD "The Sapphire Sun" was released in September and is receiving favorable airplay nationwide.
