The best kept secret in music

Press

"Folio Weekly"

Tonight I spent some moments feeling sexy and generally at peace with myself. I was listening to David Boyles play his guitar. It wasn't necessarily him or his music that did these things to me. It was even better; the atmosphere he created allowed me to wander through all these feelings on my own accord. And I loved it.

Each song progressed like this: he starts thumping a beat on the face of his guitar. He loops that into his system and then lets it sit for a moment. Then the guitar starts in: maybe some chords, maybe a melodic line. Then his voice, which hits soul not like Otis, but like Prince or Jeff Buckley; it rides and rides and when you need it most, when things are grooved into a very still excitement, he hits a high note that satisfies the soul.

There was a looseness to his style. What I witnessed was like watching a home-schooled chef, blessed with instincts and technique that others labor years over; fanning the flames, working the oven, and slowly bringing the food to life single-handedly in his kitchen - so that when you eat, you are not just tasting a fabulously succulent dish; you experience the joy of eating itself. - Smith Glover

Bio

In a current pop climate that is chock full of sampled music and copycat artists, North Carolina native David Boyles breathes life into the music universe with his organic funk, spinning stories that draw the listener in with a spiritual, sexual, and original flare.

Boyles is a multi-faceted artist - he began his musical career singing in church choir. He played drums in high school, then went on to study music at Western Carolina University, majoring in jazz bass performance with a minor in jazz guitar.

His self-produced demo showcases David's versatility; writing, producing, and playing every instrument on every track, the cd is a never-ending journey through thought-provoking themes and genre-breaking sounds.

Like some of the contemporaries before him that he lists as influences (Prince, D'Angelo, Jamiroquai, Stevie Wonder), David Boyles has a style that cannot be instantly categorized. A sonic hybrid of R&B, funk, reggae, acoustic, and soul all mesh together to create an atmosphere so vital that people keep coming back for more, as evidenced by his frequent sold-out shows at the Hollywood House of Blues.
