Bio

DAVID CHAFE earned his Bachelor of Music (Honours; Piano Performance) in 2002 and Master of Music in 2004 (Performance and Pedagogy) both from the Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) School of Music as a student of Dr. Kristina Szutor. He also holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree (1989) from MUN which enables him to manage his career as a teacher, performer, accompanist, recording artist, concert producer and musical director.

In 2007, David was recognized by the Music Industry Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (MUSICNL) as 2007 Gospel Artist of the Year for his album “Bright and Beautiful” and 2007 Classical Artist of the Year for the album “Over Hill and Valley” with baritone Christopher Bowman. He was the MUSICNL 2006 Gospel Artist of the Year for his debut recording of hymns for solo piano “It Is Well.” In December 2007, he and tenor Andrew Dale released their Christmas album "Midnight Clear" to critical acclaim and popularity.

David is founding accompanist for the Lady Cove women's choir (awarded first place in the 2006 CBC Choral Competition in women’s voices; awarded first place in the 2008 CBC Choral Competition in contemporary music), co-founder, artistic director, manager, accompanist and singer for the Newman Sound men's choir (awarded the Galaxie Rising Star Award for most promising new choir in Canada in the 2006 CBC Choral Competition; first runner up in the men’s voices category in the 2008 CBC Choral Competition), assistant accompanist for the Shallaway boys’ chorus and pianist for the praise band Foundation. His playing can also be heard on CD’s by Lady Cove, Cantus Vocum Chamber Choir and the gospel group Celebration. Each September, he produces, hosts and performs in a variety concert celebrating Christian music. David is accompanist for students of the MUN School of Music where he was a classroom instructor for six years. He operates a fast-growing private piano studio in his home. He is a member of the Music Industry Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Music Industry Association of Nova Scotia and the East Coast Music Association. David has served on the board of directors of the Newfoundland and Labrador Musicians' Association and is treasurer of Waypoints, a provider of shelter and social and education programs for young people requiring special assistance.
