"Moonlight Impressions Review"

With insightful lyrics and a caramel-coated voice to make any girl swoon, David Disharoon backs up his songs with guitar chops enough to earn the respect of the guys. It’s easy to compare the 23-year-old Georgia native’s work to the hooks of John Mayer’s early years, as well as recognize a hint of Jason Mraz‘s playful, romantic side and the sweet sincerity of Brad Paisley. If David’s debut EP Moonlight Impressions: Of Life and Love is any indication of his future, he has the potential to stand among those greats of sensitive male pop.

Radio ready “The Thief” kicks things off with a sonic nod to John Mayer plus a clever lyrical twist. Reminiscing about the day a woman turned him to a life of crime, we soon discover that she actually asked him to “steal” her heart and “rob” her of her sorrows. When gorgeous female harmonies intertwine David’s vocals on the second and third choruses, the song really soars. “Only You” is another Mayer-esque pop song, with syncopated acoustic guitar finger picking backed by smooth drums. A melodic electric guitar line comes in on the choruses, providing delightful harmony to David crooning about how the object of his affection is the only one who makes him feel alive. The catchy chorus hook will have listeners singing along by the second time around.

The upbeat and playful “Synergy (Hey Girl)” starts off with a simple shaker, acoustic guitar and bongos. David woos a girl by poetically promising her that together they’d write a symphony, with a melody as sweet as her smile. The electric guitar solo during the break adds just a dash of sensual Latin flavor without overdoing. Slowing the pace a bit with doubled acoustic guitars, piano, and a shuffling drum that kicks in at the second verse, “Someone’s Dream” offers a romantic, melancholy insight into many a girl’s heart. How does David know that “she just wants to be lovely”, and “be the girl of someone’s dreams”? Because in the final chorus he reveals that she’s not alone. It’s a universal desire to be loved and wanted, we all want to believe and have faith in others. “Someone’s Dream” offers hope to lonely souls. If so many out there feel the same way, surely one day they may find each other.

Stripped down to just an acoustic guitar in “Wouldn’t Change A Thing.” the simple production allows the story of the song to take front and center. As if looking through a scrapbook, we can almost see two high school friends laughing themselves silly night after night as she shares the latest in Hollywood gossip and fashion even though he could care less. They part ways for college but after a few years unexpectedly run into each other in the grocery store. Easily slipping back into their former rapport, the reunion blossoms into an engagement. They have no regrets for their time apart though, because both recognize that each step of their lives has made them who they are today.

The remainder of the EP is also solo acoustic, proving that David can command the coffee-shop crowd without a backing band. “Feel” seems to pick up where “Wouldn’t Change A Thing” left off, marveling at how amazing it is to be in love with a soul mate. “Where the Heart Is”, promises that whenever they are apart, his heart will be wherever she is, as opposed to the common convention that home is where the heart lives. “Daylight” is a sympathetic song of promise for a better tomorrow.

When listened to from start to finish, Moonlight Impressions: Of Life and Love plays like a romantic evening out. The more upbeat and fully produced songs lead the way and the second half winds down with mellow acoustic numbers that are perfect for settling in to sleep with a happy, hopeful heart.

“My desire,” says David Disharoon, “is to make music that is both listenable and memorable – songs that will become ingrained into listeners’ lives.” Though he cites an array of diverse musical influences, Disharoon’s own songs blend elements of pop, soul, and country into refreshing, acoustic-based soundscapes held together by intelligent lyrics and earnest emotion.

In June 2010, Disharoon released his debut album, Moonlight Impressions: Of Life and Love, an intimate eight-song record that explores just what you would expect….life and love, something we all have in common. “When writing for this record my inspiration came from real events and observations from my own life,” says Disharoon, “and my goal was to try and convey those feelings and emotions I had experienced in a way that listeners could relate to.”

Following the album release, Disharoon hit the road like so many other artists before him, in support of his music and passion playing coffeehouses, cafés, bars, bookstores, colleges and festivals – and just about anywhere else that would have him. When asked about his most memorable performance to date he cites 343 for Kids, the brainchild of a local Atlanta charity that gathered artists from across the country to raise awareness for their organization while simultaneously breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest concert by multiple artists. “It was a lot of fun,” he shares, “there was definitely an excitement in the air about being a part of something so big and so meaningful.”

Most recently in 2011, David released the single "I Believe", an optimistic anthem about the day when battle against cancer will be won. In an effort to give back, all proceeds from every download of "I Believe" is donated to the American Cancer Society. David is presently writing and recording for a new album.
