Ingonish native to release new CD ‘Last Train Out’ in September

INGONISH — The creative juices continue to flow for author, singer and musician David Doucette.
The Ingonish native, who now divides his time between his home community and Brazil, will mark the official release of his album, “Last Train Out”, next month. The CD comes on the heels of the release of his latest novel, “North of Smokey”, that was released last year.
“It’s not all that different from producing a book,” said Doucette, of creating the album.
He said penning songs was a natural extension of the process of writing the novel.
“Music was there all along. When I do some writing I keep the guitar nearby.”
“North of Smokey” tells the tale of Frank Curtis, the youngest of four children growing up in a small coastal Cape Breton community and Doucette said the album is a reflection of that story.
“(Last Train Out) is actually a soundtrack and what I mean by that is all the songs were written during the writing of North of Smokey,” he explained.
Recorded at Scremin Studio in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the CD features a mix of Doucette’s own Celtic heritage and the influence of the talented Brazilian musicians backing him up on the album. The result is unique and distinct-sounding tracks like After the Funeral, Badlands of Brazil, Shelter from the Storm and Ophelia, with Doucette describing each song as being like a short story.
Doucette said he has his own memories and interpretations of each song but is eager for listeners to form their own impressions of the music.
“I’ll let people make their own connections to it,” he said.
Doucette, who has been performing in communities across the island this summer, plans to do an official CD release in Cape Breton in September and do some more touring in the area before travelling back to Brazil. He’s also planning a tour in that country in November to promote the album.
Doucette left Ingonish after high school to attend university and then did some travelling which included spending several years in Asia. In his early 30s, Doucette returned to Ingonish but continued to travel. One trip took him to Brazil.

RICHARD from NOVA SCOTIA writes: Hi David;

You continue to impress, inspire and suprise me. I listened to your album about 4 times this weekend while working on the house. After the Funeral brought a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat. It is a bitter-sweet memory that you have captured in its most unique element and crystalize for generations to come.

Thankyou

Bro Rich
